the runway was extended in 2000 to 2 781, partially over pillars, the terminals were rebuilt to what we have today.... I believe the single accident there was with the TAP Boeing 727-200 in 1977 with 131 deceased and 33 injured. A memorial was built where the plane exploded

Driving away from the airport, one can see how amazing this runway is. From the highway, it resembles an elevated city highway perched on a forest of concrete pillars at least 50 metres high. On take-off, there is no soaring climb into the air, just a continuing gentle climb as the wheels leave the ground and the rocky coastline replaces it under the wings.

I flew that approach several times in the 1980s before the rebuild of the airport when there was only one turnoff at ramp level and no taxiway. I was ferrying small aircraft to Africa and my route was St. Johns, Newfoundland, Santa Maria, Azores, Funchal and then on to Abidjan, Cote D'ivoire. Our takeoff were generally about 30% overweight due to fuel. Fun approach and airport. Thanks for the video.

Another terrific video Michelle, thanks. I've flown to Funchal twice in recent years, landing on that same runway. Neither were as pleasant as your arival. The first time was best described as alarming with gusting and windshear so the aircraft was slewing from side to side quite violently on the run in. We were expecting a 'go around', but eventually the pilot just dropped it quite heavily as soon as he was over the runway. Wish you'd been driving 🤣. The take off is also interesting with dropping the starboard wing and banking right as soon as airborne. In fairness the pilot had warned us that this would happen, necessary due to the terrain ahead. Love all your videos which are so well produced, edited and so much information on screen....thanks again.

I have worked for Boeing (named Spirit Aerosystems since 2005) in Wichita, Ks since 1986. I've held many jobs over the years including Trim and Drill Mechanic, Tooling, Quality Investigator, Shop Manager and for the last 28 years, Research and Development. I've worked on DBT's (Design Build Teams), now called IPT's (Integrated Product Teams) for nearly every new aircraft and derivative since 1993. I've been involved with work on the 737 Classic, 737 NG and now the 737 MAX for my entire career out here, well, along with 777, 787, 767 and now Airbus A220 and new Defense projects since we now do work for other customers after Boeing sold us. Anyway, I love the 737's and really enjoy watching videos like this. I will say, your videos are truly amazing with the quality video equipment and all the details that pop up and the flight maps, etc. Thanks for all your hard work on the videos and thanks for sharing. Robb, the Americans are saying that pilot training courses are valuable these days due to the imminent needs to hire competent new pilots. The problem about using this airport as a recruiting tool is that she is absolutely right in saying it is far more difficult than normal approaches. Unfortunately it is the only "major" airport serving a politically sensitive and vital outpost of the Portugalese nation.

Nice to have this view. In real life I've seen this from a passenger seat once. Also it's a very good island to walk if you're getting to old for much climbing. Walking along the "levada's" (water canals for irrigation) is also very nice and not really challenging...this on contrary to an isle as La Palma. No , it's not suitable for rollator or wheel chair, those paths....)

I have sadly developed a fear of flying over the past 10 years. Before that i had lived in the USA, Spain, Greece and UK and flew regularly. This may sound a bit strange but watching this video has actually made me feel like i want to try to board a plane again. I'm not sure why the video made me feel better about it, maybe seeing how calm and relaxed the crew are and that its the not being able to see ahead syndrome that gets to me. Thank you.

Had some very sketchy landings there as a passenger in the late 80's before the runway was extended, you could tell which passengers were visiting for the first time as they'd be clapping as soon as the wheels hit the tarmac. I remember one particular landing when touchdown seemed way too late and I watched familiar markers going past the window much faster than usual, the people clapping must have sensed the unease of us seasoned visitors to the island, applause turned to silence very quickly. You both made this landing look very easy, very nice skill.

Great notes to help us understand what we're seeing. Glad you are including the cockpit discussions and radio channel -- for me, a little more volume on the cockpit discussions and radio would be good. In this case it would be interesting to have some drone footage of the area around the runway to give a sense of what y'all would be dealing with in case of a "go around".

I just purchased Microsoft Flightsim 2020 and flew this same approach. I've been a private pilot since 1988 and this new flightsim 2020 is the neatest thing I've ever seen as it allows me to fly to any airport and in any condition you can dream up. You should do a video on how you started and progressed to where you are today.

I remember visiting Ponta Delgada in the 1980’s. The passengers would all hold their Rosaries during landing. The breaking was so severe everything on the floor would be catapulted down the aircraft. The terminal building was like a wooden shed. I recall that the runway had a cliff at the end of it - hence the breaking. It was a strange place. The toilets in the bars were overflowing and soaking into the carpets in the bar. They had a festival going on. The girls were crawling around the square on their knees and the illuminations looked lethal. Thank goodness we had our RN trials ship on which we slept.

I remember landing at the old airport 40 years ago. Even hairier than that. Ask any really old colleagues. Take off weight severly restricted. Rolling turn and away then a landing at Porto Santo to refuel. Those were the days 😊

Very nice! I did a take off from Rwy 23 out of there in an A320 and had about 15 pheasants fly out of the grass as I rotated. Lost the right hand engine and punctured the leading edge of the outboard flap with a six inch hole. Did a circuit and return uneventfully. The engine had 11 fan blades damaged.

By the time sea water floods that runway half of europe will be flooded, you can go under the runway and look up, the columns are about 80m tall... At most it's at some minor risk of landslides, which are the main danger in a mountain terrain like we have here in Madeira.
