Rami Malek gives one of the most memorable performances of the year as Queen's lead singer Freddie Mercury in this biopic. Here's my review of BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY! #BohemianRhapsody

I still would want to see the Sacha Baron Cohen version, more when it's well known that the band tried to sabotage the movie (and they did of course) because they didn't wanted to show a more interesting side of the band and Freddie himself.

What the hell is up with that!!!!!!???? The critic score on IMDb is 4.8 while the viewer score is 8.5!!!!! And usually I like the critic scores better because they never say the words “this movie is boring and doesn’t make sense” because that isn’t usually the movies fault but I can’t help but feel true critics missed it this time. Maybe this is an extreme marketing tactic where the studio is paying critics to give it bad reviews like the song.

I completely understand the critics low scores. Remember, they watch *a lot* of movies and usually rate them heavily from a filmographic perspective (rather than based on pure entertainment value). I loved the movie, but the pacing and development during the first 30 min was absolutely absurd. Freddie went from a nobody to superstar in like 2 scenes. The director and script writers could have taken a page from Straight Outta Compton and made that initial development more coherent (instead of relying so heavily on nostalgia and concert sequences). The movie also tried to fit a bit too much into 2 hours, glossing over or downplaying many aspects of Freddie's life/personality; as well as repeatedly painting him as the villain against the rest of Queen.
@iancampbell54935 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. Would've loved to see another 15-20 min (at least) of Queen's come up. Sure, they were phenominal, but every band has to pay their dues grinding out shows to get noticed. Still loved it though, Freddy's my boy and Malek was fantastic.

I was stunned when I watched the Live Aid scene when basically everything was exactly the same as in the actual concert, from the outfits, to the movements Rami makes, to even the positioning of the Pepsi and beer cups on the piano. It was emotional, and Rami Malek’s performance as Freddy Mercury was incredible. Best movie I’ve ever seen hands down.
@arielfetters56625 жыл бұрын
The salt out of aggressive LGBT over this movie not focusing on Freddy's sexuality over all else is ridiculous. One, Freddy's sexuality was just part of who he was not all of it. Two, the band wanted to honor Freddy's wishes from when he'd been alive and not focus on his sexuality. Three, the movie people and the band both said before this movie came out that it wasn't going to focus on Freddy's sexuality. I can understand wanting to get a cause out there in a big way, but forcing it or using unwilling spokespeople isn't the way to go about it. Neither is overruling their wishes with yours.
@sincityquinn5 жыл бұрын
They are upset about how it portrays his sexuality not that it needed to be focused on more. Instead of dismissing people we should really be listeing to get it accurate. I think its disrespectful to portray a people how you think they are from your perspective. Thats how black face became a thing. Thats Tonto from Lone Ranger became a thing. Cinema has had a major problem with that. When you have people that do not understand a group depicting them without proper reference it often ends up reinforcing and spreading negative stereotypes. Its just one of those things where you immediately get it if you have had it happen to you.

I think the first 35mins or so was too formulated, too by the numbers, everything going their way, no real struggles...But at the point when the movie focuses on the band being creative together, cracking jokes, arguing like a family, and Mercury dives into the wild self destructive, crazy rock and roll life, it instantly turns into a great movie. I can see why this movie is getting some mixed reviews do to some uneven storytelling and some minor characters and scenes not being truly fleshed out at times. But I'm glad I stuck with it though, and because of a movie theater's surround sound and large screen you really feel like you were in a live Queen's concert in the 80's in certain parts. Rami Malek is Freddy Mercury in this movie I never saw anyone else. I total agree with you Jeremy, I will be very surprised if he is not nominated for an Oscar. About to go on Spotify and listen to some Queen, and I think that says it all.The film accomplishes its job. Definitely a must see...Long live Freddie Mercury! Long live Queen!

Yeah the first part went too fast and then it settled in. But unfortunately then it also began re-writing history. We Will Rock You came out in 1977 when Freddie didn't have a mustache, Another One Bites the Dust was released at a different time than in the movie as well. What really began bothering me as a Queen fan was the solo album stuff (too early), invented strife within the band plus the biggest one being Freddie finding out he has AIDS and telling the band, a year or two before it actually happened. But the Live Aid segment eased that disappointment somewhat.

I really enjoyed it. I've got the whole Queen 40th Anniversary collection from 2011, I'm subscribed to Queen's KZfaq Channel, I've learned a decent amount of the history, and while playing with the timeline a little, it was all to serve as a better movie watching experience. Even at the beginning, I was hooked with that Brian May style 20th Century Fox fanfare, I had the biggest smile on my face. And the last twenty minutes made me feel like I was at Live Aid, it was incredible. I was hoping for a more tug at your heartstrings ending because after Live Aid, there's one tour left and then they just were cranking out albums as Freddie was slowly getting more and more ill, but at the same time, in the film, he was finally happy with who he was, all the drama had been before; just living a happy life does not an interesting film make. I was expecting to go the full distance and see him in his bed talking to Brian one last time before going public with the announcement of his illness and dying the next day, but I don't think it would have served the film very well. I mean, after such a peak as that Live Aid performance, I don't think they could have really gone anywhere else with it than to run the typical exposition in writing you see at the end of every bio-pic and it be a better film for it. I was very satisfied with this film. Oh, and I don't know where they found some of these actors but they looked and sounded exactly like the people they were portraying. The kid playing Brian looked and sounded exactly like him, it was as if they pulled an MCU deaging for the whole movie.

yeah story was fiction but character of Amadeus was true.... for me its also the best for the sole reason how it completely and flawlessly incorporated creative process on movie screen and the way they incorporated it into movie score.... so far nothing had topped that
@TheMatrixxandRhodesShow5 жыл бұрын
Amadeus wasn't fictional. It took a lot of liberties as did the play it was based on. There are a lot of liberties in Bohemian Rhapsody as well. Mike Myers character, Ray Foster, wasn't even real. There was a lot of timeline things in the movie that weren't correct. In the movie We Will Rock You was wrote and premiered in the 1980's but in reality it came out in the 1970's.

I loved it. I'm a die hard Queen fan. The amount of detail is so amazing in this movie. Whenever you see them play their instruments, they play the actual chords and music (I know this because I play guitar as well). Also with the clothes, the way of acting. Amazing. The Live Aid concert was a complete copy of the original. I was very much amazed by it. So well done. I will see it again in theater and will definitely buy it on Blu-ray the second it comes out. And thank you for the review. I enjoyed that as well.

Rami Malek really killed it. I really loved the tributes to the fans, like when Freddie interacted with an AIDS patient towards the end. This was one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. Not only did Remi Malek fucking kill it, but you have to give credit to the other actors and actresses. I would’ve liked to see more of his family struggles and some of his scandals, but overall I think they knocked it out of the park. Also that Live Aid performance was one of the coolest and most incredible scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie. Get an IMAX ticket for that scene alone.

Just saw it. Excellent film. It got progressively better as it went on. I also immediately went home and watched the original Live Aid recording. And holy crap, they nailed it. Not just as a reenactment of the concert, but with the story behind it the concert became twice as powerful. Awesome.

heh this is an issue though..i wish it was about Queen as a band and not just freddie. While I might imagine that they have not leas a life as interesting as his, they are still part of the band and the songs came to be because of the collaboration of all the members involved, and not just freddie

It's not even an accurate biopic of Queen. This is more of what the member of Queen's narrative of of their version of "history" .

@johnpatz83955 жыл бұрын
Mr. Youngblood I guess it shouldn't surprise anyone that a Queen cover band would demand a biopic of "the band" and not the person who made it what it was. Sure they could have gone the route Motorhead took and said "nah, Freddie was Queen" but instead they decided to leech off his coprse for every penny and ounce of attention they can, and that includes this movie, of which one of the surviving band members said "someging amazing happens in the middle" in referencing Freddie dying of AIDs because it allows us to see how they carried on, as a high priced queen cover band.

So glad to see finally a good review of BR. There are so many more Hipster sounding reviews out there that just don't connect with the idea that some films are mostly going for fun being loving, moving film that just feels great! It doesn't try to delve too much into tired Soap Opera drama for the 100th film to show how Rockstars inevitably go off the rails and do the same stupid things. This movie had just enough of that without pulling the whole movie into the dumps. It was fantastic, and fun & beautiful and it made me cry at the end. Not for such a sad scene but because it was both epic and tragic at the same time.

It respected Freddy by not going into gratuitous detail about his private life but managed to humanize him and give him flaws and take him on a poignant arc to find himself. I didn’t mind the changes to the ending either because the movie really did need that catharsis and that moment where he says he never wanted to be a poster child for AIDS... and I like that the movie didn’t make him that either or try to be a cliched cautionary tale about stardom
@8LiterallyJustTheNumber84 жыл бұрын
I don't exactly know if sugar-coating his life is really all that respectful. Freddie didn't care what people did with his image after his death, as long as they didn't make him boring. I would argue that telling his life story in accurate detail would have been a lot more interesting.

@etrnluv5 жыл бұрын
That's what I was going to say Ray. Jamie was incredible in that biopic. Personally I love the fact that Freddie is being introduced to future generations because of this movie. They have now started a sing-a-long version. It's created a cult following like Rocky Horror. People can dress like Freddie and the audience can sing a long with lyrics on the screen. I think it's genius. Freddie would be so proud. Seeing how he was so moved when the audience not only knew his lyrics but sang along. Then creating We Will Rock You specifically so the audience could become part of the song. Once again Freddie and Queen are rising above the critics and the fans are coming together to make this movie live on in infamy just like Freddie. I truly hope it becomes a tradition like Rocky Horror. Those kind of phenomenons don't happen often. Bohemian Rhapsody is going to live on. Just as Freddie and Queen always will. Casting for this movie was superb. It is a tough balancing act fitting everything into one biopic like this. To encapture the legend that was and it's Freddie Mercury and also the band Queen. Giving backstory, heart, humanism and a kick ass soundtrack sung by Marc Martel (who is Freddie incarnated vocally) and Rami who portrayed Freddie so brilliantly was a really amazing feat. I know they cut quite a few scenes out because the movie was already too long. Including a few songs performances from the Live Aid concert. I wouldn't have minded the movie running over time. It was an experience and a journey I didn't want to end. Just like Freddie. I loved it and will definitely be buying the Blu-ray and hopefully one day getting to sing a long in the theater like I have with Rocky Horror. It never gets old. As Freddie said Queen represents all of us. I thought Bohemian Rhapsody was the best biopic of an entire band while encapsulating Freddie as the driving force. So well done. I smiled and cried. I lived at the end and my heart sang. I felt like Freddie was with me during that movie. With all of us. It was so powerful. Just like the man himself. This world has only one Sweet moment set aside for us And we can have forever And we can love forever Forever is our today You take my breath away Freddie. 🎶💞🎶

@Craig James Review Just saw your review (great video btw) . You brought up some very good points on the movie. While I don't think it's a fantastic movie, I thought it was a pretty good movie with a lot of things sort of rushed over, especially his band members. I think this story would've been perfect as a miniseries on Netflix or HBO so that they can take their time in telling this story. Rami Malek in my opinion is Oscar-worthy! He really blew me away!!
