This mochi rice dumpling is rarely sold in restaurants and can be found in a few Chinese grocery stores. The fillings vary but most shops only put a small piece of pork and sometimes a salted duck yolk in the center. It is truly a piece of artwork to wrap and tie the bundle to look like a neat pyramid with minimal string holding it together. Most people only remember their relatives and moms making this delicacy and have no idea or patience to make this. One joong is very filling and can serve as a meal by itself.

It's tricky but I've been teaching some of my grandkids and they love it. Everyone loves to eat it but not always happy about helping. It also freezes well.

Fun to do. It's a process so when I make it, have to make a lot as everyone loves it and I freeze some. I've taught my kids and grandkids how to make and hopefully one day they will do it themselves.

That is another one of my favorites! We'd go to the Chinese bakery on Maunakea St to get ours then go across the street and buy roast pork and char siu and go home to pig out! Sometimes the meats would not make it home, too tempting to break open the pink paper and eat it all! I miss those days!

I do too. I know making it is a group effort if you have the help. I'm glad my mother taught me how to wrap and now my children and grandchildren are learning. Char siu is easy, roast pork more involved and messy for the oven cleanup and you really need to air out your house.

How do you do the one with the egg? That's always my favorite part! And do you just use the fresh ti-leaves fresh?

All you do crack a salted duck egg, discard the white and put it on the rice. Iike fresh ti leaves but can't get it here so I have to buy bamboo leaves, soak. You need more leaves cause they are small.

Is there something else we can use besides the blk eye peas? LOL I'm not a fan of it nor peanuts ... I was able to find it here in Fl and GA. but they are expensive. 5.00 for just one.

You can just omit the beans. Some people even use yellow split peas. Be creative and use other things.

The asian store here is owned by vietnamese people. They're version of jung is very plain, they only have ham in it. Not as tasty as what you make, and my mom :) I also love the duck egg.

Black eyed peas? Sounds like a bit of a Southern infusion going on.

Can banana leaves be used also?

You could, but not as pliable to make the cones. You just have to wrap it differently.
