This newly installed high efficiency boiler was installed with an expansion tank that prematurely failed. The video clearly shows the fracture of the metal on the sides of the tank that weep water. Home inspection by John Frejeris

My expansion tank has me puzzled. The air pressure in the tank goes down and has to be pumped back up but soap testing the Schrader valve does not show any air leakage. Also there is no leakage of water into the tank or anywhere. Is it possible that only air could be leaking somewhere along the welded seam of the tank?

Thanks for watching the video. These expansion tanks have a bladder inside them, which is where the actual air is put inside. It sounds to me like the bladder inside the expansion tank may be bad. If the bladder is not holding the air inside, it may be leaking inside the tank itself and the air may be finding itself releasing out of the air separator. Expansion tanks do have a life expectancy. I hope you find this information helpful.

@@inspectflix That's probably it. The tank is over 30 years old. I just didn't think it was possible that air could leak out of the bladder without water leaking back into it.. Thanks for the advice.
