Could somebody address if it's SOP to actuate the relief valve manually by lifting up on the handle on the valve head. I was trained, by a very senior boiler tech., to test the relief valve this way every time I came on shift. However, the boss at my last job had a fit and stated that the valve was only tested when it was sent away for inspection. If this is true, then why does the relief valve have an actuating handle. The shift key went out on my computer, so I cannot type question marks-please excuse-John in Texas

As recommended by the ASME, a try lever test should be performed every 30 days, or after any period of inactivity. - Low Pressure Boilers fifth edition. Fredrick M. Steingress

Hi Guys, Does the inspector witness an accumulation test of the safety valve on the boiler ? In my experience I have yet to see an inspector know what the firing rate on the boiler is. Without knowing, its not a proper test. They dont even ask.

Most steam engines used waste steam as a feed water preheater before being sent up the stack to help induce a draft

“Verified Repair”. only the shop Certified for VR can VR a valve, or else it will be None Coded

Our underwriter began to demand replacement of the safety valves on our 800HP JB boilers every year. Six practically new year-old safety valves thrown in the scrap bin each and every year. What a waste.

I work at a VR shop that fixes relief valves. That's hilarious.. I'll sell yall new valves and buy back the old ones as a credit lol.
