The beginning of the Chris Petersen Era:
After being blown out by Georgia the year before, and losing popular Head Coach Dan Hawkins to Colorado, the Broncos promote from within...electing their Offensive Coordinator of the past 5 years, 42 year old Chris Petersen, to assume the responsibilities of Head Coach.
Petersen instills a culture of belief and hard work in a team that goes 12-0 against a soft schedule, finding themselves in the Cinderella position of gaining a BCS Bowl berth against national powerhouse Oklahoma.
No one expects too much from the upstart Broncos, just being invited had defied CFB's age old precedent. No one outside Boise, ID has a clue that Boys in Blue had come to Tempe with a rock in a sling and every intention of slaying Goliath.
What would ensue on the field that night would eventually go down as one of CFB's greatest games of all time spark the beginning of the Chris Petersen Era for Boise State.

Wasn't even the greatest college game of the decade. Texas/USC was voted by the fans/espn best game of the decade in any sport.

Ryan M If you like Oklahoma, of course you'd want to defend this loss and not give as much credit to Texas for winning. USC had 2 Heisman winners, were on a 35 game winning streak, and no team in College Football history has ever won a National Championship 3 years in a row, which USC was about to do. The stage Texas won on is what makes it better, if both games were regular season match ups and not BCS Bowls, I'd say Boise/OK was a better game. But the fashion Texas won in, on the stage it was set, you just can't say it wasn't the best.

okay dude, an underdog won. Stop beatin off about it. It was a close game, yes, but i would even say the game USC played vs Notre Dame that year was better than the gamr vs texas. BSU was a bigger underdog to OU than texas was to USC. BSU vs OU was exciting the whole way through, with an absolutely insane ending, the ending was far better than USC vs Texas. Its not even a comparison lol. And yes i said i like OU but im not really even a college football fan really, i like the NFL far more. I just respect OU and how they dont play like most other college teams. Theyve played more NFL style for a long time. No fuckin way u can tell me USC vs Texas was better entertainment wise, no way in hell. And u say they had 3 heisman candidates, yeah leinart, who sucked in the nfl, bush whos mediocre in the NFL, and Vince young who sucked in the NFL LOL. OU vs BSU had peterson atleast he went on to do good things lol.

⁠@@willmuny9201Doug Flutie Hail Mary, Brian Westbrook’s catch on the hail mary by Cordell Stewart (who was a decent QB at times for the Steelers, had one of the longest QB runs in NFL history), and The Play with the band out on the field. The rest of the games I don’t know of (born in 1995) but I know 3 of those games you mentioned.

The 2013 Iron Bowl might match it for back and forth action, but this was certainly the most important college football game ever played. As the FOX announcers begin to openly state, just BEFORE the final play, Boise State proved that gridiron football has so many play possibilities, formations, speed vs. brawn asymmetries, lateral options, and everything else, that the supposed 'little guys' CAN, maybe, take down perennial superpowers. "Trick" plays? No such thing; only imaginative, unorthodox plays, which COMPLEMENT, not replace, classic football strategy. Gridiron football is better for this game having been played. And that, to me, is what puts it over the top as the greatest of all time.

Adrian Peterson and Trent Williams have become all time NFL greats at their positions. I remember this game like it was yesterday, not really knowing who Boise State was (I was 11 at the time) and I was cheering them on to beat Oklahoma. Definitely this is one of the greatest games ever played. Everything about this game was so wild, from Boise State being up by as many as 18 points, Oklahoma coming all the way back especially from that 2-point conversion play that felt like it lasted forever, Broncos recovering from a pick 6 to tie the game on a hook-and-ladder from a 4th and 18, then the two trick plays in overtime that gave them a 4th down conversion and 2-point conversion to win the game. While this was technically from the 2006 season, the fact it happened at the beginning of the 2007 calendar year actually became the beginning of absolute madness that entire year the following season.

still to this day the greatest college football game I have ever seen live on TV. not even a fan of either team but that year I remember the talk of Boise St was going to get crushed. So I HAD to watch it. very glad I did, fucking amazing game. This is why College>NFL

Pretty impressive with the amount of NFL talent playing in this game Best player in the league AP, All-Pro Ryan Clady, Orlando Scandrick, Jermaine Gresham, Kyle Wilson, Gerald Alexander, Schouman had a promising career cut short to injuries I'm sure I'm missing some more, but what a great game and accomplishment for a team with such resilience and character

I remember accidentally catching this live and just rooting for Boise State b/c I liked the smurf turf and they were huge underdogs. I almost turned it off. I'm so glad I didn't!!

I remember watching this game with my dad back then. We went nuts when BSU pulled off that final play (well, my dad certainly did, since I didn't know what the Statue of Liberty play was at the time) to win the game.

Now we have a 12-team playoff starting in 2024 which I firmly believe that Cincinnati making the 4-team playoff in 2021 really expanded that conversation for Group Of 5 teams to be able to hang with the Power 5

That's really a tough call. Most would immediately say no as there's a lot of prejudice against Boise. Being a Boise fan I'm a little biased. I think you could argue that Oklahoma really under performed during some of the season. And that at their best they could beat Florida. But seeing how Florida figuratively destroyed the second rated team in the nation, I'm thinking it would of been a much tougher game for Boise. All of this is just speculation though and in the end it doesn't really matter.

you know even if you were on Oklahoma you would have to be proud to play in this game because it was so memorable and well played....Oklahoma lost but they played a great TEAM in the truest sense of the world and it is was clear the team extended from the players on the field to staffers scheduling trips...if you were on Boise State you are forever on the highlight reels and MOST IMPORTANTLY as good as games may come down the years this game cannot be surpassed..period

Been going back & watching games from the 2000s my childhood ppl wanna recommend some games for me to watch? College ball back then was much better than it is today. Back when college football was really awesome. Now the SEC and B10 want to run the whole thing. Yawn! Folks, the only thing saving college footballl is the Big 12 if you want football resembling this game, support the B12 and don’t support the 2 selfish conferences who want it to be all about themselves. It’s about time to make a stand and save this game.
