You've seen our review of the Voigtlander 50mm f/1.0 for Nikon Z cameras, but how does it stand up against the Nikon 50mm f/1.2 S, arguably the beast of all Z primes?
Here we give you some out and about comparisons of these two lenses and how they perform for things like portraiture and general purpose photography.
Which one is your favourite?
Both available from Grays of Westminster:

This year I bought the Voigtlander 75mm f/1.5, 50mm f/1.2 and 35mm f/1.2 Nokton lenses in Leica M Mount so I can use the new Techart adapter to autofocus them. I just love the charecter, colors and bokeh of the Voigtlander Nokton lenses. For portraits I don't want clinical sharpness anyway. For landscape and architecture, the Voigtlander lenses are just as sharp as the Nikons once stopped down to about f/4. The smaller size, weight and cost of the Voigtlander lenses cannot be understated. I can carry my camera and three Voigtlander lenses around with me all day in an average sized shoulder bag without exhaustion. I would need a full sized backpack for the equivalent Z lenses. Also, because there are no electronics involved, I know that the Voigtlander lenses will last me a lifetime without needing to be serviced. So yeah, overall the professionals doing wedding and other fast action photography will want the Nikon f/1.2s. But for hobbyists like me, I highly recommend the Voigtlander Nokton lenses instead.

Amazing combo of Voightländer lenses, congrats!🎉 I am also thinking about the 50mm and 35mm 1.2s M mount and TMZ adapter, but are the aperture and focal length directly, via the adapter, communicated to the camera body? Or do you have to manually input that? The Z mount version of the Voightländer dose have electrical connections and therefore communication is available. Thank you very much for your reply and enjoy those beautiful lenses!

Yes, the 50/1.0 is perfect for the Zf. The Zf has subject detection support for MF and this helps A LOT!

Do you think the 50z f1.0 with the yellow marking or the 50z f2.0 with the yellow marking plus the red, green and blue colors marking as well looks better on the Zf which has red and blue on it as well? My favorite color is yellow and that f1.0 design is what I wanted but that f2.0 colourful models looks fun and match the Zf well and still has my favorite yellow color as well. But do you think 50mm f2.0 is enough to achieve street photography that with a full person in frame with blurred background? Do you think manual lens is practical as everyday lens as well?

@@NetvoTV the 1.0 and the 2.0 are very different lenses optically. I like it because of f/1.0 and the look this brings me, so the 2.0 is not an option for me. Street with 50/1.0 is quite a challenge and not for me, I have an easy/cheap 40/2.0 for this.

My Voigtlander 50 F2 Z is the best lens I've ever owned. My nikons are equally as sharp, but it's the rendering. Just gorgeous. I use it for as many things as possible. So I would probably prefer the V in the 1.0.

I have the voigtlander 50mm & 35mm APOs and the 40mm f/1.2. I rented the nikkor 50mm f/1.2 and compared that with my 50mm f/ 1.8 S and my 58mm f/1.4 (ftz) on my z7II. To me the 50mm 1.8 is sharp but the bokeh was not to my liking. The 50mm 1.2 was incredible, heavy & expensive, the only one thing that I could carry all day. The 58mm 1.4 (ftz) was acceptably sharp, fantastic rendering and a little heavy. I had gone mirrorless to save weight. I had voigtlander F lenses before and hoped that they would come out with z mount lenses & they did 😊 . I am a classical "wall art" photographer and love the ability to MF using the green square; I did mf for my first 40+ years of shooting, so I'll swap that effort for lighter gear. For my work, the IQ of voigtlander gear is outstanding. Love your style of reviews. Keep them up.😅

I'm debating between getting the voigtlander 40mm f1.2 or the 35mm APO for the Zf. I know the 40 is not as sharp as the 35 APO, but can you please tell me at what f stop do they become similar in sharpness? I'd probably be using them from f2 to f4 most of the time and as an everyday lens. cheers.
@alfredbenas9803

@domtomas1178 There are other considerations between the 35mm apo and the 40mm f/1.2 besides sharpness. The 35 is lighter than the 40, the color might be slightly better (the whole point about apo lenses). The 40 has better bokeh effects. At f/2.8-4.0, the 40mm becomes very sharp; I have no complaints. Full disclosure, I hate 35mm, always have, prefer 40mm. I also shoot 90% B&W. To me, the 40mm is more versatile. If it's available where you are, I'd suggest trying them out before you buy. Hope this helps.

@@alfredbenas9803 thanks for your response. I shoot all my personal photography in B&W (but in RAW, in case It works better in colour) Yes I might need to try them both in a shop. The 40mm is my preferred field of view and is about £250 less as well 🙂

Totally agree with Kon and Becky here, the Voigtländer rendering is really special and I slightly prefer it as a finished look. However, I have the Nikkor, and don’t think I need both just at the moment. On the other hand, what a great option to have, especially as you can get it in M mount and use it with film! It’s only about 1/4 the price of a Noctilux, and looks well worth the price.

Thanks for this very useful video! For all you (potential) adapters of the M mount Voigt 50/1, I'm fairly sure there are significant optical differences between the M and Z mount versions, so don't automatically assume that the findings of this video will also apply to the M mount version.

Hello Both, Good to see. I have not either lens but I do have the Nikon 85mm f1.2 that is just amazing like all of Nikon Z series lenses. I know the Nikon lenses will be a bit more expensive but if your a photographer like me who 97% of the time shoot in raw you will alway be doing some post-processing, so adding a vignette only take a few seconds. So yes if you love the look the Voigtlander give you on every image great. But trying to remove the vignette or character can take more time. Just saying.... Keep well, keep safe and continue having fun?

So interesting to see this. I am increasingly tempted by the idea of the Zf and the Voightlander. It will be some months before I can buy as my laptop just died so that's my first priority purchase. But could I try them in the shop if I come to Grays? I will be in the UK at the end of November. Should I make an appointment?

I'm reallly interested in adapting the m-mount version of the Nokton, but sometimes adapting rangefinder lenses compromises them. It's a shame that there are no L-mount versions of the Voigtlaenders (or mechanical Leicas, Zeiss).

Just bought the Voigtlander - it matches my Zf perfectly - but it is not bad on the Z8. I have to analyze results, of course - I only have it for a couple of hours .. But I can already say: patience pays off - the atmosphere you are catching with this lens: breathtaking!

After a couple of days I can report: to have the Voigtländer 50mm f/1.0 on my Nikon Zf and the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 on my Z8 ist the perfect 50mm setup. The Voigtländer is for slowly painting with light, the Nikkor 1.8 draws images nicely enough (very nicely to be exact) and it is of course much more practical for less patient subjects - like toddlers, squirrels and everything in between. I don't fell the need for the f/1,2 - especially a it is as bulky as it is.

I paired TTArtisan 50mm 0.95 and Voigtlander 40mm 1.2 on my Sony with Techart adapter to make them as auto focusing lenses. Techart adapter provides good reliable auto focus even at 0.95 and shortens the focusing distance as a side bonus. These are my go to lenses when I go out for street photography.

Just as a Range Rover should come with a technician from the factory Voigtlander lenses (FL 50mm+) should all come with a tripod. Once you understand the limitations of a MF lens and adapt to using them, Voigtlander's are fabulous. As you pointed out more than once, the rendering and bokeh of the Voigtlander is superb.

One thing I learnt from the camera conspiracies channel is that for video, a lens with character is far more important than it is for photo because you’re basically otherwise editing thousands of highly compressed images unless you’re shooting in some crazy uncompressed video format and you have hours of time left for tweaking the image

I agree, I have both too. I love the rendering of the Voightlander and manual lens. For work and when you need images to be in focus, like for event photography the Nikon is the clear choice. The quality of the image is outstanding but flatter than the Voightlander. The reason I got the Voightlander is for travel. The Nikon is too big, it stays home, the Voightlander comes with me.

At the end of the day the content and the way it is presented is what is going to make your "art" memorable. Go buy a real old Life or Look magazine and reflect on the gear those guys used. That being said, I do use Voigtlander find them small, well made and affordable and this lens is in my bucket list. If money was no issue I would have both. A tougher challenge for the "Voigt" would have been to shoot a wedding with it and match that up with the Nikon competitor.

Good job -- but lower quality resolution vid for you guys - whereas the 4.1k? Manual Focus --vs- AF; weather sealing -vs- ??; With control ring and lens buttons - vs- none. How about comparing the Voigtlander NOKTON 50mm F1 Aspherical (this lens) to the NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct -- they are both MF and both NOCTs - AND very similar priced "NOCT"

Well, tough comparison, but voigtlander is not on the favorable position here. I've already seen Nikkor 50 1.2 quite substantially discounted, or very slightly used at prices below 1700 EUR, and this voigtlander is virtually non existent on the market in Poland (only leica mount), there are no used ones as well. Yeah Nikkor is a honking beast, but if it can bought easier and cheaper, it has reliable AF, is better corrected and only a little less lovely in terms of character it's hard to opt for voigtlander, unless you really, really want one...
