The church of San Girolamo, which was begun in 1334 and consecrated in 1359, is part of the Certosa which was the Carthusian monastic center of Bologna, built in the fourteenth century in the area to the west of the city and used as a public cemetery at the beginning of the nineteenth century . The terracotta statues in the niches on the facade of the church, depicting King David and Queen Esther, are the work of Gabriele Brunelli and come from the suppressed brotherhood of Good Jesus. The church has two bell towers: the construction of the main bell tower dates back to 1611. of the church, built by the architect Tommaso Martelli on behalf of the Carthusian fathers, adding to the small fourteenth-century bell tower. The interior is articulated on an unusual inverted T plan, since in the sixteenth century two chapels were added to the fourteenth-century body at the entrance, on the right and on the left, which formed a sort of transept in an opposite position to the usual one. The church preserves a remarkable art heritage. The current precious wooden choir, rebuilt in 1538-1539 by Biagio de Marchi, has a more fifteenth-century aspect than a sixteenth-century one since the latter most likely used the cartoons of the previous refined inlays and perhaps some surviving pieces. This replaced the previous choir, a work of 1488 by Melchiorre Provenzale, which was destroyed in 1527 by Charles V's Lanzichenecchi. An important decorative phase corresponds to the priory of Daniele Granchio from Ferrara, from 1644 to 1660. The religious commissioned a cycle of canvases of large dimensions inherent in the Life of Christ to some of the most important painters active in Bologna at the time: Francesco Gessi executed The expulsion of the merchants from the Temple and The Miraculous Fishing (1648) in the nave, Giovan Andrea Sirani created The Supper in the house of the Pharisee (1652 ) and his daughter Elisabetta Sirani painted The Baptism of Christ (1658) in the Chapel of San Girolamo; Lorenzo Pasinelli painted Christ Appearing to His Mother with the Holy Fathers Released from Limbo (1657) and Christ's Entry into Jerusalem (1658) also in the nave. while Giovanni Maria Galli Bibiena The Resurrection of Christ (1657) and Domenico Maria Canuti The Last Judgment (1658) for the Chapel of San Bruno.
