Great addition to the line-up! I've worked in construction/ utilities for almost 20 years, Knipex pliers and cutters are 2nd to none.

As a landscaper I carried a pair with 14 or 18 inch handled bolt cutters in the truck to cut wire off root ball baskets and other unforeseen surprises in the soil, definitely a good bug out tool, one must always think outside the box for multi use items, good video as usual. Even those short handled ones will take out most padlocks.

I bought a set of these after having to cut through a winch cable with side cutters a few months ago and it took about 5 minutes and my hand was cramping. I have to use 2 hands with the bolt cutters to do it but it will absolutely cut through the same cable in a about 2 seconds. Awesome little tool

These work great for welders. I’m a pipefitter/welder and when your tig welding you usually cut your wire in half. Not a hard job with lineman pliers but when you get above 1/8” or get into stainless or inconel/chrome it gets tough. I clip my wire after every weld as well so I’m doing a lot of clipping. These are the bees knees. Makes standard wire feel like your cutting some thin tie wire and makes the stainless/exotics like a knife through hot butter. Only problem is you cant sit them on a table. They look nice and others notice. They will grow legs fast. As soon as I’m done cutting they go in my back pocket.

I’m a tradesman knipex is just awesome stuff I use the insulated tools they offer since I work with high voltage I no longer buy anything else if I can help it they can be a bit pricey but when you consider your buying it for life and they work better then anything else it’s a no brainer

I use the Knipex all the time when muskie fishing. Use them to cut the hooks so I can release the fish quickly. Works wonderful one-handed (In case you accidently hook yourself!) Bolt Cutter would be very helpful if you need to "borrow" fencing to secure your house windows from entry. I knew a girl who used bolt cutter to exit a limited access road due to a blocked road ahead. Many were helped by her actions. Many uses. Great Review on my favorite bolt cutters.

Their line mans pliers also work very well for these tasks. Having the plier aspect is nice.

I can attest to the quality as a second generation user my grandfather's Knipex tools (that is still have) say West Germany on them very cool,and I use there tools everyday at work they cost more because there ment to be bought once and to work the best which they definitely do

One test I'd love to see with these is how the do up against fishing hooks, larger saltwater stuff is normally hardened. It would be ace if the 6 inch version ate the bend of a 5/0 hook, I'd keep one in my tackle bag for sure then!

I bought some Knipex mini bolt cutters.. Excellent quality they do a range for cutting various thickness and grades of metals. Padlocks are tough and need the largest in the range. My mini bolt cutters are just for cropping screws, nails, etc.. Not a mark on the super hardened Jaws.

I use the almost daily at work. They work awesome. Cuts feel like butter.

You should do a follow up to this showing how to efficiently cut through chain link fencing using multiple, 2, 1, and sometimes no cuts (2 bends and then unweave). Also the ratchet technique (rope/strap with stick) to pry up the bottom of the fence.

Knipex makes some great tools. I know a lot of guys I work with have knipex tools. I still stick with klein tools, mainly because I already have all klein and their stuff is slightly more so better for electricians. But I used to have a pair of knipex side cutters and they are great.

Knipex bolt cutters are excellent but single use - you might explore the knipex end cutters - they cut flush - they can pry out nails and the flat head can be used to hammer stuff into other stuff - they will cut nails - screws - wire - fence - and the jaws can open wider - the plier is also smaller so easier to pack - from 180 mm to 200 mm

Nice review, Cliff, and those look like a nice pair of bolt cutters. I agree with your philosophy of buying the best gear you can. I get what Renaissance Marine says, but I'm more of a mindset that if I ever *do* need it, I want to be 100% sure that it is going to work, first time, every time. Of course, sometimes you have to work your way up to the best one you want, but it's all a process. Hey, and don't forget, if you run into wire or a nail your Knipex can't handle, you've always got your Leatherman!

Another great set of pliers is Klein 9 1/2 “ lineman pliers. I’ve worked for the power company for going on 3 years now and I’ve had the same pair the whole time. I’ve cut everything from nails to wire all the way up to small diameter reinforced steel core cable. The pliers allow you to have a lot of leverage and they come with a life time broken or lost exchange guarantee. Bolt cutters are nice but in my opinion I like having one item that allows me to do multiple things. I highly recommend looking in to them. They are great and for a medium ranged budget you can’t beat them

Good tip. I have a larger heavy duty set in my bug out trailer. I don't go small on this type of gear, but that because of my philosophy against bug out bags.

If your going to spend that much money your better off getting a quality pair of high leverage side cutters if weight is an issue or a pair of linesman pliers. Both will cut chainlink easily and you'll have a pliers with the linesman pliers. Knipex and Klein both make great linesman pliers and diagonal pliers. In my INCH bag I carry Knipex Cobra, an insulated pair of combination pliers in case I have to deal with hot wires. Throw in a Klein 11 and 1 screwdriver and a adjustable wrench and you have a pretty capable set of tools for an urban environment. If you wanna go all in and do some serious scavenging add a small pry bar, a decent sized pair of bolt cutters, vice grips and a hatchet. Those are the tools we mostly used for scrapping and with them you can deal with about anything. Those little Knipex bolt cutters are nice but if I were to choose I'd take the Tektons since they'd have a little more leverage. Tekton makes decent tools especially their American made stuff.

Thanks, I inherited a bunch of tools and working on a project to substitute a wire hanger for something else, but if it doesn’t work, I’m going to buy the German brand to cut the original piece of metal tubing to a smaller size.

Leathermans will cut chain link fence. Knipex does make a bike tool that is made for cutting brake cables which can fit chain link fence, but its also smaller and has the ability to crimp connectors on bikes.

Got the 8 inch and 30 inch Knipex, to keep in truck. Should be able to do fence and most padlocks/chains.

i'm definitely going to get some of those Knipex bolt cutters.

Maun (england) makes some very good compact bolt/sprue cutters with force multiplier. They are a bit pricey though

I keep a pair of fencing pliers in my BOB, they can cut almost all types of fencing, they have a hook for prying, a plier jaw that is great for removing hinge pins off of doors or pulling wire out of the way, and a hammer head. In a pinch they could also be used as a weapon with the spike and hammer head. You should take a look at them, normally they have two built in wire cutters so if one dulls you have a second.

I had bought a HK Porter pair they look just like the Knipex ones and cut great and I only paid $10.99 for them.

I think some multitools have cutters that would be sufficient to cut fencing. There are some benefits, for sure, but I'm just not sold on carrying a separate piece of gear that I may only use once or twice. Though, those are A LOT smaller than traditional bolt giant cutters. Thanks for the vid!

If you only need to or plan to cut through chain link fencing a large set of wire cutters would go right through it. Stanley has a line called Fat Max and the large Stanley Fat Max wire cutters are BEAST and cost around 25 bucks. Mine are 10 years old and work great. Also if you get stopped by the man.. you aren't carrying a b&e tool.. only a stout set of wire cutters

glad to folks talking more about having fence cutters in their bags. you always do great vids. my opinion: a minus-15 dollar pair of wire cutters (kobalt from lowes is a good brand) are absolutely fine for a go bag. they will cut the same wire pretty much as the knipex, they just wont do it as long. where those cheaper brands save money is on the hardness of their cutting teeth. knipex is great for your regular tool kit, they could well be the last cutters you ever buy. but if your throwing it in a bag that you may not ever use, and then only for a finite period of time, the cheaper ones are gonna be fine. just stay away from the harbor freight variety. so what im saying is i have the high quality ones in my tool box and truck. the lower quality ones go into go bags. to me the big question is whether to stop with cutters that can do chain link, or to go to a bolt cutter. in an urban situation you may want to get past locks.....

4:43 the jaws look jacked up from that already! My knipex pliers wrench broke at the cam (the part that surrounds the pin by the slider lock cracked in two and fell out), I need to contact them about it. Worried I'm buying into hype. My felco cutters also took a hit the first time I used them on light gauge metal. I'm not negligent in the least, I love my tools and buy for a lifetime, not for a few weeks... 😒

Another awesome video, and a valid point. Traversing an urban environment in an emergency situation is going to be tough, and a pair of cutters will certainly make it easier. What about the larger stuff though? A full size set is a bit beyond the weight limits of your standard b.o.b. What's your view on lock picks? a bit much for an EDC as could be seen as "going equipped" but for a bug out bag could be a nice addition (along with the skill to use them).

That was a good video and yes the knipex mini bolt cutter can cut through many wires and nails like butter but I reckon that the bahco mini bolt cutter cuts with a slight more ease I own one of those and I tell you they have awesome cutting power and they are a bit more cheaper than the knipex but still are very good quality and they are made in Sweden I’ve use it for many years for cutting bits of metal and fencing wire when me and my father were fixing the fence around our property. They could easy save someone’s life as well in a situation if you had to cut a chain link fence they can cut through it like butter and how I know the bahco mini bolt cutter cuts a little bit easier than the knipex is because my dad has one and I’ve tried them both out the knipex is a bit more smoother with opening and closing but the bahco cuts a little bit stronger like with piano wire you can cut through 3.6mm with the knipex well the bahco you can cut up to 3.8mm thick piano wire. Also you should try out the knipex 10 inch diagonal cutters they are very good as well they have nearly the same cutting power as the knipex mini bolt cutter with cutting hard wires but at the same time you can make clean cuts on softer wires like electrical wiring so you get a all around wire cutter see mini bolt cutters are a fantastic wire cutter for cutting fencing wire, nails, springs and piano wire but they not really meant for doing electrical wire cutting so they are still not really a replacement for diagonal cutters in your tool box. Now with most diagonal cutters they are only for cutting copper wiring and electrical wires but they will damage and wear a lot cutting the harder wires so that’s why you go with the knipex diagonal cutters they are the same steel like the mini bolt cutters but can do all around type of work and due to been 10 inches you have the cutting power like the mini bolt cutters on harder wires almost they can cut through chain link fences like butter as well I’ve done many cuts with all types of wire with it it’s got a 4.6mm cutting capacity so just a little less then the knipex mini bolt cutter that has 5.2mm thick but in urban areas the most common wire you will come across is 9 gage wire which is 3.6mm to 3.8mm thick so no problem I’ve also tested them out on a bit of chain link fence at my friends house and they cut like butter

Hi TheUrbanPrepper. What's your take on the "Draper" brand 18" 450mm bolt cutter? I'm pondering wether to chose this inexpensive cutter or the more expensive Knipex in your video. Usage would be to cut away my metal garden fence.

Having experience with both handle types, would you now recommend the comfort grip or regular for these mini cutters?

Try using 2 Ampere power adaptor to charge that power bank. It'll reduce the time to get charged. (it'll take About 10 hours to fully charge.)

Been watching your videos for a long time and I just wanted to say thank you for making them as well as not getting political or anything crazy over the top. Seems like way too many preppers want to just rail against the government as much as they talk about the prep's themselves, if not more. I mean I get the mentality and everything but it gets old hearing the same stuff over and over from these people. You are one of the very few who does not get political and I really appreciate that. I am by no means pro-government but I am not anti-government either, I just appreciate the focus on preps, especially your focus on urban prepping as that too is my environment. Anyway just wanted to say thanks and keep making awesome vid's.
