I can remember just how disappointed folk were when Beecham disbanded so many well used we all thought local railway lines and stations, it was a scandal at the time. Thanks for filming this it was entertaining.

I am the last person to leave Worsley Station on a train! OK, The story ..... As a couple of school kids me and my mate (Simon McDonnald) were mooching around the old station and got talking to these two guys. (I know it would never happen nowadays) One was driving a train and the other a JCB. The JCB was ripping up the track behind the train and loading it on the carriage. Bottom line was me and Simon both got a lift to Tyldsley on that train and back to pick up more track. So we were definitely the last train to leave Worsley Station as there were no tracks left after we left!

Hi 👋🏻 That brings back some happy memories 😃 I can just remember the tracks being down in 74 but not in use 😖 The junction for both lines was just before Patricroft 👍🏻

If you'd have just crossed the road at Monton you would have gone on to the canal bank where strangely there is an actual lighthouse and a very nice pub

It is so great to see former railway lines being used for the public and no traffic. And the weather looks so promising as well.

Enjoyed this. Have known these lines since before closure.Just think you could improve presentation by sourcing & inserting archive photos of what the vanished stations once looked like in their heyday. Also TYLDESLEY is pronounced "TILDSLEE"

I worked on the slip form concrete running surface of the bus way. One of the sections is the longest monolithic concrete slab in the world

Eccles! My (very cheap) hotel for Manchester was near there... And I still for the life of me CAN't get why guided busways are supposedly better than a rail-based solution, or even a 'normal' bus. I don't believe it's much faster than a normal bus, nor much cheaper than a tram line, the only thing I could imagine is the flexibility to continue on a normal road afterwards... Edit: missed a crucial word.

I'm quite fascinated by the guided busway. Do the "rails" actually guide the bus so the driver doesn't have to steer? What advantage does it hold over just a plain stretch of tarmac for a bus to drive along?
@MirkoC407
@MirkoC407 3 жыл бұрын
The rails are used sideways, by some "shopping cart wheels" (that's what they look like) mounted to an extended steering rod pressing against the inner side of the rails. The driver even should not steer. It would damage the steering gear by force from both sides, plus if there is a bump in the rail that force is stronger and will actually break the driver's thumbs. What to do is different from operator to operator. In Essen, Germany (50 miles away from my home) as the birthplace of guided busways in passenger operation - Mercedes needed a test bed at their front door before installing such a system at the other side of the globe in Adelaide, Australia - drivers should officially place their hands losely and flat on top of the steering wheel rim to give passengers the - unnecessary - feeling of being able to gain control any moment. Even if a guide wheel breaks the bus won't crash but just rumble along the guide rail until standstill. Nevertheless you will see many drivers with their hands in the lap.

Easiest way to explain go to pleasure beach Blackpool they have some cars you drive round a track there are little rods and wheels stuck out to help guide you in the track however If you go on a Royal Navy jolly boys outing in 1972AD you can given enough bumps from behind getting one over the guide rails Don’t worry the bus drivers not as daft as we were happy days

It is cycle route 55 and runs more or less all the way into town centre, loads of places to get on to it, easiest traffic free route is maybe Freshfield Ave where it takes you past the hospital
