I teardown the M12 Polisher/Sander and compare the build quality to Snap-On. At half the cost, the Milwaukee tool has got a nasty bit of soldering, but it's still better than the Snap-On.
Thank you for helping me make these VJOs.Early access here http:/www.Patreon.com/AvE

The reason good shop clothes are worn and shabby is that the crap stuff that isn't comfortable, warm or binds in the arm pits and such, never makes it to the worn stage. The crap stuff gets binned. So when you have a good one, you wear it forever! This shows that it is well made and fit for purpose. Same with tools. Old stuff rocks!

@bmos02
@bmos02 4 жыл бұрын
If Snap On sells 500,000 of those (to suckers), it'll save them $5000. Cost savings aren't usually figured in proportion to the retail price, they're only relevant in regards to the number of units sold. That's why saving pennies slightly under-building car parts is so profitable for the OEMs (and much more so for the aftermarket which will save whole nickles).
@a89proof
@a89proof 4 жыл бұрын
@@bmos02 absolutely correct - the higher the volume, the more those pennies add up. It's impressive, though not surprising, the effort a manufacturer will go chasing those pennies when producing tens of thousands of units per day.

Wil Thieme Yes I get that. And it helps the responsible manufacturing manager to get his kpi’s in the green area but . . . . . . in the long run things like this will result in them selling only 450.000 in stead of 500.000. The tragedy is that no one of the management will be even aware of it.
@Conservator.
@Conservator. 4 жыл бұрын
Wil Thieme Also pennies from the BOM resulting in nickles in retail is the wrong way of looking at it. This happens if you add costs as a percentage of the production costs while a lot of the costs are fixed. Eg shipping l, storage, marketing etc don’t get really less expensive by using the PCB in stead of a real connector. It’s only in the (false way of) calculations that it does.
@RyTrapp0

@@blzt3206 $5k adds up, plain and simple. You don't run a successful business with the resources necessary to expand by leaving pennies on the table, assuming that they're simply 'insignificant'. One of my favourite coats is a 1960 British Army flak jacket, the inspiration for Brandit's Brittania coat and it is super good condition for its age, not a button missing or a tear anywhere and I am lying on the dirt and mud in it fixing my car up. The other jacket I wear often is an old black Alpha Industries MA1 flight jacket, OK the pocket linings have given up but the thing is tougher than a coffin nail and just keeps on going despite it getting a lot of rough wear. Favourite leg wear is my old lined 68 issue camo trousers I forgot to give back to HM Gov and still going strong after 30 years of hard wear, it has been patched countless times but the lining thermal inner is still good and its like wearing a pair of centrally heated trousers.

Snap on website shows $225 for the tool $456 for the tool with 2 batteries and a charger. If you have a good relationship with your dealer and/or wait for sales, you can probably get the tool alone for $180. It’s still expensive for what’s inside. I’d like to see the two get used side by side. For me, the Milwaukee 3/8 ratchet wasn’t good enough to keep me from buying snap on. For all those saying everything snap on makes is a ripoff, they still dominate the hand tool market. Their electric and pneumatic has always been spotty.

A freewheel diode works just fine for a one-quadrant drive with PWM. A half bridge (totem pole) is two-quadrant, but that's overkill for this application (no need for controlled braking). You could run a MOSFET in place of the diode for a tiny improvement in efficiency as the RDSon causes less energy dissipation than the diode forward voltage drop. Done right you might also see a reduction in electrical noise due to elimination of the diode reverse recovery. Neither of these would be worth the cost or effort to implement when the output is going to a brushed DC motor.

I’m a mechanic in Massachusetts Transit. Five or six years ago, most of the top brands were fairly equal, with snap on maybe being a little bit better than most. Since then, Milwaukee has gone all in on cordless. The M 18 line has had a few duds, but overall between performance and variety it’s out in front now. With the five-year tool warranty it’s a solid bet too.

The diode thing AvE mentions is called by several names, but the most common term is en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flyback_diode . It's good engineering and I'm happy to see it there. But I admit I'm a bit puzzled as to why such a *big* diode. I guess they were designing for the situation where someone is repeatedly pulling the trigger all the way and then letting go of it quickly. Like putting up fence boards or something? The repeated, fast, on-off cycling will cause the diode to heat up. So it needs to be skookum to absorb (and dissipate) all that heat. That's my best guess, anyway.

I got the same coat. Nice and used. Warn, warm and tattered. Full of coffee stains and welding pin whole burns. Just like the new cloths that they sell in the fancy malls to the teenie boppers. Oh and by the way, nice prison pan.

The freewheel diode will protect the MOSFET just fine from the motor's back EMF. The voltage drop of the diode will waste a bit of energy, but using the diode saves all the extra circuitry that would be needed to drive a high-side transistor.

I have owned the polisher, impact and light since the well they came out. So far there not to bad. The batteries are great, and they do indicate charge level. The one light on the tool changes colors as the battery discharges.

I own both and honestly don't care for the Milwaukee. It sits in my toolbox and my snap on is usually on top of my tool cart. Maybe it's made better, but to me it feels like it just works better. I even went and got the ratchet too and have no complaints about either. I just truly don't don't enjoy using my Milwaukee stuff. I haven't even used my heated Milwaukee jacket this year.

The diode protects the regulator output from reverse voltage, as the motor turns generator, and provides a near short heavy load that brings the motor to a fast stop.

It does matter what is the motor control output stage if you consider higher power motors. In every PWM cycle, motor current flows through one MOSFET and a motor, and in the turn-off time the same current flows through the freewheeling diode. It is usually a Schottky diode which has lower voltage drop. But when the current gets higher, the diode losses are just too much and it gets replaced by a synchronous MOSFET that decreases the voltage drop - saving the energy and reducing the heat dissipation.

Ironically I found out about the Milwaukee while wandering the smelly halls of my local Horror Freight - I noticed they had a crappy red knockoff version which prompted a Google search that turned up the Milwaukee. I purchased the Milwaukee and couldn't be happier.

Some of the petticoat wearing amongst us will notice the mag loader and warn you that sharp-eyed scoundrels up to no good will visit you shortly. To be safe, if you can, deal with them with a hand tool (no excessive force); perhaps the Ti prybar/screwdriver (which I'm having made since I can't wait forever for you do it) would be a good choice.

I was hoping you'd also test continuity from the positive terminal to the motor housing. The FETs have 2 leads (TO-252 package) which means the heatsink is the 3rd terminal. I can't see the part number, looks like "IRF3xx" which would suggest N-type (IRF usually uses 9xxx for P-type, i.e. a complementary pair would be IRF510 and IRF9510) and the Drain would be tied to the ground plane. That configuration could also be a half-bridge, IRF is pretty good about putting a free-wheeling diode inside their FETs so an external diode isn't needed.

I think criticsm of the shop attire is unfounded - however there could be critical attention paid to the cleanliness of the fingernails here... Referring back to a long-forgotten Monty Python sketch. "How do we know he's a king?" "Because he's not covered in shit!" Leaving that aside you are obviously a very knowledgable individual of the engineering persuasion, and for that I thank you!

I've used the same 12v Milwaukee drill, same body style as this sander, for 12 years no. Its on its 3rd battery now and minus the rubber coating that has been in a state of failure for probably 11 years the drill is still kicking just fine. I work with plenty of people that swear by the smaller snapon power tools but I've never cared for the rocker type switch they came with in the past. 500$ sounds like you got cheated but maybe thats just the currency conversion. IMO the 12v milwaukee line is a very good investment. I am however a Dwilt fan boy i guess and stick to the 20v dwalt stuff where i can

A tear down of a professional dual action/random orbital polisher/buffer would likely make for a REALLY interesting BOLT - especially something like a Rupes Bigfoot series or the LHR 15ES for a more affordable example(still ain't cheap though!), or a FLEX 3401. A much more affordable option would be Griots Garage 6" buffer though. The 'usual scumbags' have their own versions too, but the 'cottage industry' brands would be more interesting.
