All Trompettes and Clairons. One 16' bombarde on one manual and one on the pedal. Sorry to disappoint
@78lds12 жыл бұрын
You actually heard the 16' pedal bombarde's "ravalement". In french baroque organs, the 1st C# on manuals and pedal are usually not implemented (the key does not play any note, when it exists on the keyboard at all). On big baroque organs, builders used the pedalboard's 1st C# to play the A below the lowest C, which they called "ravalement". The same exists in Bordeaux and Poitiers organs. It sounds like the A of a 32' stop (or rather like a G, because this organ is tuned at 392Hz).

The Albi organ has what is called a 'ravalement' (extension) in the pedal. Here, the bottom C# pedal plays a contra A (ie 32' A). This was a very useful note in the old literature: it was the dominant of the 1st tone or the tonic of the 3rd tone and added considerable gravitas. Some organs like the Clicquot in Poitiers have a ravalement which has the A, A# (Bb) and B below the normal bottom C.
@mrlucasa2237 ай бұрын
new organist here. what is a "tone"? I've heard it used but never understood what it meant
@tormus17 ай бұрын
@@mrlucasa223 Tone in this case means something like a key. These were the old church modes ie 1st tone is near to D minor, 2nd tone near G minor, 3rd tone near to A Minor, 4th tone is like the 3rd tone but ends on the dominant. I hope this helps a little bit.

At my parish, they have groups that cover many styles... but the parish has a Yamaha Clavichord electric grand piano and an old console organ. And yes, the Clavichord does have the setting for a baroque church or cathedral pipe organ.

Only thing that does him justice is the posture of our heart, not the type of instruments. If a kazoo makes one fall on their face in worship then so be it. When we make worship about what we like, we make ourselves the object of worship.

I think otherwise, you musn't forget that Charpentier was a Frenchman, and French organs are always like this. It's mostly not about how it has to be played, but about what does the organist likes. This organist certainly likes a lot of sound. And by the way, if you never heard of the composer, you also must admit that it is incredible to listen to this

I think it's more about "taste". German organ builders were super-capable too, e.g. Waltershausen Trost organ has 32' Posaunen-Bass. It's not as brutal, but could be if Trost wanted too. Keep in mind that Germany was quite divided those times, different cities had different dukes, different church (some were Lutheran, some were Pietists etc.) and this greatly inflluenced what was allowed to even compose for a music and I'm pretty sure also what would be allowed for organ stop to sound like. J.S. Bach himself had problems with authorities for composing too daring and advanced music, pieces of heresy!!
@JohnGaleLondon5511 жыл бұрын
Bombardes are usually deep Trumpet stops for the pedal department of the organ. I can't actually see them on this particular organ but they will be behind the pipes you can see. Actually the pipes you see may well be just for show as they are in many organs. The longest bombarde pipes are usually 16' or 32'.

@geuros7 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's an insult to compare these two - and if it is an insult, then it's an insult for Cavaillé Coll organs as well. You just can't compare these, one is an excellent baroque organ, Cavaillé Coll organs are usually among the best romantic era organs ever built, and by that I don't mean Notre-Dame de Paris organ, but St. Sulpice or St. Ouen in Rouen... It's like apples and oranges
@unequally-tempered14 жыл бұрын
@EccentricRichard Actually this organ is most beautifully voiced with really refined and beautiful solo and chorus flues which play with great sublety and excitement. Similarly the organ at St Maximin and a later instrument at Lorgue near Carces. In the tradition of Dom Bedos, the father of modern organ building, Moucherel and Isnard were masters of their craft.

@GoPatriots100 Yes aren't they wonderful! It was the first time I had been introduced to this genre of organ and St Maximin is the other instrument to keep an eye on. @latribe III- Zeiger was school master and pianist in Rouffach, the same alsatian village than François Callinet. He migrated to Lyon where first he teached piano and was a musical instruments retailer. Then he employed a shop foreman from François Callinet factory to build organs in Lyon where organs were prohibited in the liturgy during the ancient monarchical regim. Lorgues organ was the first organ his workshop built the year of his wedding.

@octavebasse8 The pitch of the organ at St Maximin is a tone lower than standard, so this instrument is likely to be the same - somewhere around 390Hz.
@brigadeir998 The quality and heritage of Moucherel's work at Albi is demonstrated by its capability to have been "preserved" by incorporation into successively romanticised instruments seperated in the 1980s work into two instruments in the two neighbouring buildings, one wholly romantic and this, a restoration of the classical instrument. However St Maximin remained unincorporated into later developments and unaltered since 1776. It's the "unrefinement" of reeds giving real excitement

@orgaman Oui si on veut.
