"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZfaq. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZfaq, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

In principle I agree, in practice due to the post-truth society it'll become a pissing contest of republicans and democrats making accusations on each other's presidents being traitors and they'll argue about the portraits ad infinitum. So it'd have to go via courts which'd take time, effort etc. We have more important political battles in this issue than the painting in particular. E.g. Legal battles regarding gerrymandering etc.

We shared him, unknowingly, but doing so was our gift to so many more than just us. Somehow I thought Jimmy would live forever, but he is leaving behind his beautiful heart and mind for all. I was 10 years old when Reagan was inaugurated into office and the hostages were released the very next day. At only 10 years old, I thought that was strange and immediately suspected a back door deal was made. I didn’t find out about the October Surprise until many years later. The Republicans have always been treasonous, Machiavellian POSs who would do anything to attain and maintain power. I might add, Reagan also inadvertently funded the bombing of the US Marines stationed in Beirut when he paid ransoms to Hezbollah through Iran to free Terry Freeman and several other Hezbollah hostages, and Hezbollah used the ransom money to fund the bombing. Reagan was a disaster!

People with mental illness living on the streets (because Reagan closed mental hospitals). Nearly as many scandals as Trump. Trickle down economics - make the wealthy wealthier and the poor will get some trickling down - NOT. There's a lot Reagan did that we're still paying for. Republicans, for some reason, do it over and over - give the very wealthy huge tax cuts and breaks, raising the debt, hurting the middle class and poor, and then saying we owe too much and must cut Social Security and Medicare for your grandparents. Crazy thing is that as an Iranian-American we knew this for a long time. I remember watching documentaries from Iran in which they mentioned how there was a back room deal between the Reagan campaign and Ayotollah Khomeini and current government of Iran during the 1980 election. By the way, the current government of Iran at the time opposed storming the U.S. embassy, but there was a speculation that the U.S. was spying on Iran through the embassy hence why the reactionaries and fundamentalists decided to seize the embassy in the first place.

I think it would be more likely to cost Reagan any chance of winning reelection in 1984 because the incriminating visit would have happened too close to the 1980 general election vote for the leak to make its way to reporters in time to prevent Reagan from being elected in 1980. Reagan might have been impeached once he got into office as a result though, and Reagan being removed from office would mean George HW Bush would likely never become President. There WAS a book about this titled "OCTOBER SURPRISE" by Gary Sick, which came out during the Bush/Quayle years, in 1991. The impression I got was that GHW Bush, who ran for the nomination for President but lost to Reagan (only to then become the VP candidate), was the main player in the plot. Interesting that there was that attempted assassination by Hinckley, not too long afterwards, which -- if successful -- would have made Bush the next President years sooner than when he won against Dukakis in '88. I'm not saying that Reagan didn't know that his own campaign was cutting a deal with the Iranians to keep the hostages long enough to help scuttle Carter's chances of re-election, but it also wouldn't surprise me if Reagan was oblivious to the secret dealings of the Bush faction, in anticipation of a Hinckley event to clear the way for Bush, who couldn't become the Republican POTUS candidate and, thus, perhaps opted for a more nefarious, LBJ-style modus operandi to succeed a martyred President.

There was coverage of this, minimal but there, at the time. I remember there was a Stanford student who wrote a highly regarded, though under-reported, thesis (very well-researched, well-documented) on this - the sabotage of the Carter hostage negotiations by the Reagan campaign, preventing the hostage release until after the election to prevent Carter from having a major international success ("an October surprise") right before the election. This wasn't just hard-ball politics. It was/is a CRIMINAL act. I forgot the name of the law to cite, but it is ILLEGAL for any U.S. citizens to negotiate (or alter in any way any current Presidential/State Department negotiations) with a foreign government, i.e. interfering with the current President's foreign policy. To do so is falsely and mis-representing the U.S. Government. This is why Congressional representatives may travel and tour foreign countries but they are not allowed to represent the U.S. in any international relations negotiations (unless they are on the U.S. State Department's staff, under the President). Glad this conspiring criminal is, albeit belatedly, coming forth with more evidence. Those engaged in politics back in those days were aware. Very happy this story is making a comeback. After the Carter negotiations fell through (due to the Reagan sabotage), Carter, desperate to get the Iranian hostages home, then called upon Special Forces to come up with a rescue plan for the hostages. That ended in a spectacular and embarrassing failure for Carter that helped seal his fate and usher in the vote for Reagan. There were many suspicious circumstances related to the failed rescue mission. It's been a long time but I recall one of the issues: the helicopters failed to perform. It was later discovered that the "sand traps" had been removed from the engine air intakes. Why would anyone remove the sand traps (which were standard) in a desert (read very sandy environment) rescue mission??!! There were a number of other unusual circumstances reported, as well. In other words, there was probably sabotage at play in that failed mission, as well.

Story time! Back in the early 2000s, I was in high school and was a raging lunatic Republican who listened to talk radio, watched Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly and the rest of those dumbasses at Fox News. I grew up listening to amazing stories about Reagan from my dad, who loves good ole saint Reagan. My father, who unfortunately still remains a right winger (shameful, but still I love him) told me about the hostages being released because Rambo Reagan was going to go full psycho if the Iranians didn't release the hostages. Anyways, I had a high school teacher who was teaching a Cold War class and he was a great teacher. He was a former Army Ranger and a registered Republican, so I couldn't wait for him to get to the Reagan era of the Cold War. Well, the teacher finally gets to the 80s era and my friend and I were thrilled to get the typical Reagan propaganda bullshit stories. Nope, still waiting to this day because it never happened. My teacher was not your typical Republican. He told us about this story nearly 20 years ago and I was shocked. Never forgot it and I'm glad I didn't. I told my dad about it a few years later when we we're talking about politics that Reagan is not what I thought he was and that his campaign prevented the hostages from leaving sooner. He didn't believe this was true and thought it was just me coming out of the right-wing bubble (which I was) and becoming just another left-wing college student.

I was listening to Thom Hartmann - truly one of our intellectual giants - in 2005, and he clued me into what really happened in 1980. I watched all this shit unfold at the age of 13 and was old enough to still remember it all, but too young to be able to connect the dots. Thom reminded me that, right after Reagan took the oath of office, the entire mainstream media - on each and every single channel - went to a split screen showing the Iranian hostages being freed. That showed that not only was there an October surprise but that the media was fully complicit in it. I don't believe in Hell, but if Hell existed then ALL of these people - Reagan and his campaign, the media heads, all of them - would be burning in it right now for all eternity.

I was a fully mature adult at the time, and it was SO clear to me what had happened. But by that time I had come to the conclusion, after Nixon was elected, that there were millions of white Americans who were still steeped in racism, fear and ignorance. I mean, Nixon promised the president of South Vietnam, in 1968, right before the election, to NOT negotiate a peace with North Vietnam, spurred on by Henry Kissinger, Anna Chenault and Nixon himself, promising the SV president better terms in the peace treaty. There were supposed to be peace talks in Paris, derailed by these traitors, and the Vietnam War went on for five years more, killing lord knows how many people, Americans and Vietnamese, for no reason whatsoever. So when Reagan won in 1980, I was disgusted but not surprised, because I by then had come to never underestimate the racism and ignorance of the American people. A newer expose needs to be written about the Paris Peace Talks of 1968, naming Kissinger, who turns 100 in May, and the rest of the traitors.

yup, It wasnt Regan who cut the deal, it was MIC. Regan just made a deal with the MIC to deliver more income through a ton of brutal wars around the globe and deliver he did. And why do you think this report is coming out now? Not because Carter is in hospice or whatever. But because the race to primaries is beginning. MIC has been trying to get a war started in Iran for decades and the expectation was Biden would be able to do it, But he has consistently tried and failed. So they are reminding him. Biden has been very destructive, and damaging but not in a way that MIC makes the money (and his policies are coming back to bite us but MIC doesnt care about the last part.) Biden did fashion himself after Regan as a candidate - or tried to. Even tried to replicate Regan's Mr Grobachev speech but because he is Biden it had all the charisma of a melted vanilla icecream. He tried to implement Regan's hardline policy on Russia (sanctions, engage in wars and do a coup) to recreate a USSR like collapse and royally failed. His inability to work with the OPEC and inability to make out own companies pump more oil means inflation went up. His sanction upon sanction means the countries have started to dedollarise and move away from the banking system. His insurance cap means countries are ditching a ton of western services. His idea of engaging Russia in wars in multiple countries in africa has only kicked nato forces out from those countries. His threats to countries all over the world to comply and all his secondary sanctions for random reasons have meant that those countries are diplomatically moving away from USA to the point where age old enemies are signing cooperation pacts. He hasnt even been able to sell enough weapons to aliies. he has tried to start wars in multiple countries including Iran over and over and failed. And even long time puppets of US like Pakistan are literally not playing ball right now. He cant even get Tunisia to cooperate. Now I dont want a war to start in iran at all, or anywhere in Africa and I am glad they got rid of the occupation, but I am just saying this is how MIC works. People need to understand we dont choose our presidents, The real race is over in the primaries where the MIC picks their candidates from each side to give us an illusion of choice. We just get to pick which one out of the two which actually belong to the same corporate party. In a lot of ways we arent that different from the CCP when you think about it. And people need to understand this because they might just push another candidate instead of him or even switch to Trump if he promises more wars. Keep watching the media closely. They all come out of a cave saying the same thing when they get their orders from MIC overlords

I love studying history and every time I've learned about the Iran Hostage Crisis, I've been told and read that it was actually Jimmy Carter who freed the hostages and how he saw it as his duty to release them and safely and quickly as possible; regardless of the politics. He didn't care if it made incoming president Reagan look stronger politically. But knowing that it was Reagans campaign's mission to make the hostages suffer longer makes me angry.

At the time of this event I was in first grade living in the Midwest. I asked a fellow first grader why there were yellow ribbons tied to the branches of trees in people’s yards. “Well, duh!” this kid said. “Because the sausages are coming home!” It wasn’t until decades later I learned that Regan’s guys had not only delayed their release until after the election, but AFTER THE INAUGURATION!!! When they finally came home, reporters should have asked them how it felt to be a complete pawn in some political game. Crazy how nowadays the “October surprise” is not only an accepted thing every presidential election but in fact expected. (Edit: My folks have always claimed this was the truth, but I’m glad it’s now “official.” Time to revise the history textbooks!)

Yup. That was not the first time the Republicans used treasonous international back channels to screw the Democrats during presidential elections. There is a famous recording of a telephone conversation of LBJ calling then Sen. Everett Dirksen Republican Senate Minority Leader and personal friend of LBJ where LBJ was outright accusing Nixon and his presidential campaign of treason in sabotaging the Paris Peace Talks between North and South Vietnam by telling the South Vietnamese to hang tough and don't compromise b/c if Nixon won they would get a much better deal from a Republican administration then the Democrats. Think of the millions of American and Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian would have been saved if those talks were successful in the late 1960's.
