"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZfaq. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZfaq, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

It is astounding to hear Kyle refer to Blackwater as a purely "republican" outfit, tying it to [only] Donald Trump, whereas Blackwater [nowadays called Constellis Holdings], is a bypartisan outfit contracted by the CIA, with the likes of Jack Quinn [Democratic Party] on its board of directors... The question is why the need to obfuscate and calling Blackwater a solely republican outfit, whereas they served since 9/11 under - all - US Presidents?!

I'm 63. And a vet. When I saw that Cheney's warmongering sent a mercenary group into Iraq AND forced our soldiers to take orders from them--doing so is WAY OUTSIDE the chain of command, violating regulations--and I thought, "WTF are they doing, demoralizing our troops?" The result was shit like Abu Ghraib, where people were lured to the other side (going mercenary) after their military service as long as they served Prince's goal: to turn our entire military into white/christian nationalists. Side Note: Guantanamo Bay installation was NOT a prison before 9/11. It was a leftover base converted to spy on Castro. It stayed that way until 9/11 and they turned it into a torture base in Cuban territory and airspace. It was therefore out of reach beyond the laws of the US. A technical loophole for renditions.

The funniest part about the "Anglo-Saxon" myth is with modern genetics they have done lots of testing in the UK, you know land of the Anglo-Saxons, turns out to this day people are more Celtic than Germanic. The entire Anglo-Saxon thing is mostly a myth, because the ruling class and Royal families were directly descended from and related to German invaders, but the mythology convinced average Brits they too were part of this ruling class, but their very ancestors are the people who were oppressed by the Anglo-Saxons, the people lived on but much of their culture and language was destroyed, except in places like Wales. Just find that kind of stuff really interesting, reminds me of Romania too where the national myth that is widely believed is they are decedents of Romans soldiers who colonized the area, when genetically they are overwhelmingly Dacian, the ancient people the Romans oppressed, with very little Italian genetics in the population.

Blackwater was ordered to clear the jam by any means necessary, so they shot at vehicles in the traffic which made them plow through the crowd, killing several people. He told me it didn't show up in American papers for a month or so, and it was described as an uprising. He also talked about being in combat along side American soldiers, and Americans weren't allowed to fire because they have several rules of engagement, but Blackwater was able to fire because they only have like 2 rules.

To Kyle's question as to whether we've advanced at all, I'd answer that with the title of one of Lenin's books: "Imperialism, the highest Stage of Capitalism". No, our society hasn't changed since the age of Imperialism, as its maintained its core, the source of all the depravity; Capitalism. When you base society off of private property, and a market system, this is the only logical conclusion. Of course the system based in greed breeds greedy people that want to expand their economic holdings. Of course the system that encourages people to expand their economic holdings creates an insular class of unfathomably wealthy people. And of course those unfathomably wealthy, detached people will stop at nothing to further expand their power, influence and wealth. Even so far as to commit acts so evil as the Imperialism and Genocide that "we" can't seem to shake. But really, it was never us, the working class that did any of these things. Individual workers have of course been coerced by the Capitalist system to participate in the building of these evils, and some workers (Western workers) naturally do benefit from the transfer of resources to the West, but at the end of the day, all of the blame, and all of the intention behind these crimes rests solely and firmly at the feet of the Capitalists. In short, it's socialism, or it's barbarism, and the sooner we can expunge the regrettable existence of this wretched system from our world, the sooner our world can be ours.

I agree totally with you, but I would caution against using Lenin as a guide. Lenin destroyed socialism in the Soviet Union and set up the institutional mechanisms that Stalin used to create the most viscous tyranny in history.
@jodinha4225
@jodinha4225 5 ай бұрын
@@StinkCabbage From the history I've read, the only mistake Lenin made was not creating institutions by which power would be correctly transferred. His death certainly came as a shock to him. But his writings are blameless. His ideas, paired with Marx are paramount to understanding why our world functions in the way it does, and who the true enemy is. Both of them made it very clear that their works were to be interpreted by the individual with respect to whatever situation the world finds itself in; its not a dogma.
@StinkCabbage
@StinkCabbage 5 ай бұрын
@@jodinha4225 Well you need to expand your historical reading about Lenin Lenin was a merciless totalitarian who created the Cheka, dissolved the Constituent Assembly, dissolved the Soviet workers councils, persecuted the Anarchists and the Socialists. While not as bad as Stalin, Lenin was horrendous. Read the works of Nestor Mahkno and Gregory Maximov. In my opinion, Marx would have turned over in his grave if he knew what Lenin had done in his name. I don't need Lenin to understand the world is divided by economic class. I never read Lenin to understand the history and concepts of Imperialism. I'm not saying there isn't any value in his writing. State and Revolution is his best contribution in my opinion. But to overlook the horrors he bears responsibility for in Russia is a big mistake for those who wish to change the world. He created the world's first modern totalitarian regime and rode the wave of a popular revolution in Russia he had no part in creating.

All the stuff you're seeing in Gaza with AI generating target lists, Azerbaijan's victory in Nagorno-Karabak using advanced UAVs (purchased from Israel and Turkey) and continuing operations by Russian and US mercenaries in the developing world to secure oil fields, gold and mineral mines is the kind of world Prince has been actively working to create and profit from.

The Blackwater people used to take their Humvees out and burn them if they had mechanical issues in Iraq. It took a few days to get a new vehicle and 2 weeks to get a part shipped, so they would go torch these $120,000+ vehicles a handful at a time. Meanwhile enlisted soldiers made less than $30k a year...but it's cool to waste hundreds of thousands of dollars at a time because they didn't want to wait for a part.
