The "Messina" is such a magical miracle wonder machine that makes one thing sound like many things at the same time in a beautiful unpredictable way. Please roll it out as a plug-in already!
@somethinglike2294 жыл бұрын
it's actually not a plug in, the Messina is the live version of the prismizer which was made by Francis and the lights and he explained that the Messina and the prismizer are achieved by using specific settings and options in the Antares harmony engine. You can find the tweet in the bon iver reddit
@tueblom81814 жыл бұрын
@@somethinglike229 I think Tom just means that they should try to remake it into a plug-in so it's more widely available. I mean damn, that would be cool!

The Messina does not use Antares Harmony Engine. It was simply inspired by the Prismizer. It’s actually the MIDIHARM setting on Eventide effect processors + Antares auto-tune.

The signature sound of Bon Iver. It is twistedly beautiful and so unperfectly perfect in everyway...much like each one of us. That is why I think it has an appeal to me. Justin seems so willing to open himself up through exploration and vulnerability.

@icecreammmmman19914 жыл бұрын
@@RobertSlover obviously Justin can sing. It's a sound effect, like reverb or anything else
@RobertSlover4 жыл бұрын
@@icecreammmmman1991 no. it absolutely is not. reverb, delay, etc does not alter the pitch in a way to mimic a melodic line. autotune is cheating period.
@icecreammmmman19914 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure Justin Vernon can sing just fine without "autotune" and therefore doesn't need to cheat. He's using it as an effect, not because he can't hit the notes. The purpose of the Messina is to allow the user to harmonize a single input in real time. That's not "cheating," it's engineering ingenuity that expands the possibilities of music. You don't like the way it sounds, that's cool - some people don't like it.
@RobertSlover4 жыл бұрын
@@icecreammmmman1991 its not auto harmonizing that would be cool it alters the melodic line being "sung" its not about subjective taste its objectively obvious. there's a reason shallow modern pop music uses it. justin vernon first record "for emma forever ago" was as stripped down as possible thats what makes it great and will last the test of time.

i dreamt of small a village, of me sleeping therein in a hut, and of the horseback militia falling downhill towards that village, and the family of wolves howling at their lanterns. My lady, my dearest, lifts the curtain with a knowing smile, to let me know, that we've been here before, that she wants nothing more than a good fight. I asked her who they were, who these forces lighting up the night were, and she sang back, like a hunter whose trap was full: 'Muss-a-been Forces'. and we howled uphill like steam.

Song of the day 08.09.2017/ this time i merely overstayed my welcome, the burghers could no longer hold their breaths, grew weary of the constant racketing of my 'getting ready'. "A fool, despite all his other faults, has this too: he's always getting ready to live."----perhaps i'm especially such a fool, in that I'm always getting ready to leave----and then never arrive. Well, I'm here. And as the good song goes, THERE'S NO LEAVING NOW.

I get the appeal of improvising or providing a 'unique' experience of the song for a live show, but Bon Iver really really strays far from the studio version in almost every live show I've seen on youtube... like he is incapable of performing a song live in the way it sounds on the album. Kinda disappointing.
@MRichK6 жыл бұрын
If you want to listen to the album then listen to the album. Live should be live not an exact copy.
@apolloniangerm6 жыл бұрын
Nobody would see live shows if it weren't for the album... people go to see an artist live because they liked the music they bought from them... I'm not saying he should perform "exact copies" but in all the live shows I've seen of his most recent album, they aren't even close... and they don't even sound as good, they're just mostly weak improvisational versions. Like this one or the Blogotheque version of 8 (circle)... I couldn't even finish that version, it was just garbage.
@FloTheUIM6 жыл бұрын
I disagree.. seeing bon iver live, as I have done, is an experience rather than just a live performance of their studio work. Justin and the band create raw, spontaneous emotion with an incredible atmosphere! The pure silence and engagement from the audience is incredible and moving. Only achieved by performing like this in my opinion. However, i do love the banjo style on the studio version of this track!
@leanderthal11385 жыл бұрын
I think it's just a case by case thing. I agree with you on that 8 Circle version not being up to album snuff, but i could also link like 10 videos of them performing songs live at a level much higher than the album. For example, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hbV3obOkuM_PdYU.html
