Bonanza - Episode 35 - Badge Without Honor - "After a U.S. deputy marshal apparently saves Adam's life by gunning down two men who shot at him, he eventually reveals that he in town to bring a close friend of the Cartwrights to Sacramento to testify in a statewide racketeering trial, but the Deputy Marshal's motives soon become suspect as to what he really want to do with the reluctant witness." Badge Without Honor
Director: Arthur Lubin
Writer: John Twist
Stars: Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker, Michael Landon
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 24 September 1960 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Claiming to be a federal marshal, Gerald Eskith (Dan Duryea) arrives in Virginia City, armed with a subpoena for Jason Blaine (Fred Beir). Eskith demands that Jason accompany him to San Francisco to testify in the trial of the notorious Murdock gang. Although he owes his life to Eskith, Adam Cartwright is suspicion of the self-styled lawman, and insists upon accompanying the two men on their long and dangerous journey.
Reviews:
"When two men attempt to gun down an unsuspecting Adam Cartwright, a man claiming to be a deputy U. S. Marshall kills them. He is a charming man, deft with words and a quality swordsman. A woman close to the Cartwright's and considered equivalent to a sister to the Cartwright boys is married to a man that has a dark and unknown past. The Marshall states that he is there to escort the husband back to San Francisco in order to testify at a trial. However, uncertainties are developed as there are some inconsistencies in his story. Adam decides to accompany the two men to San Francisco, a development that the Marshall does not like. He is in fact a hired killer whose mission is to kill the husband. This forces am armed confrontation between Adam and the Marshall. This is an excellent episode, the supposed Marshall is many things, even a ladies man as he charms the woman, taking what would be scandalous liberties with her in the days being depicted." Written by cashbacher on IMDb.com
"Dan Duryea guest stars in this one as a US Marshal from San Francisco on the hunt for a fugitive in Virginia City. Said fugitive is a friend of the Cartwrights, but when Duryea saves the life of Pernell Roberts from a pair of bushwhackers who thought it was Duryea coming up the trail instead of Adam, the Cartwrights are in a pickle over who to believe.
As George Sanders is usually an English cad, Dan Duryea perfected the American cad role. Not that he hasn't played good guys on the big screen and the small, but he's so much better as a smarmy villain you just love to hate.
I remember in a couple of reviews of other things he's appeared in, I've written that he fools you when he turns out not to be a cad. But that isn't what happens in this episode of Bonanza." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"For fans of the great Duryea the availability of this 'Bonanza' episode on DVD is a treat. As the suave but deeply suspect Deputy Marshall Gerald Eskith he dominates the show (not, admittedly, that difficult with the stilted performances around him). His con man name-dropping turn at the Ponderosa, culminating in a dazzling display of swordsmanship, is the highlight. How he arrives at Virginia City in a dazzling blue suit I'm not sure, but he goes on to try to seduce his quarry's wife with old world courtesy and honeyed words, as camp and urbane as Vincent Price. His tricky gunmanship seems likely to win the day, but of course his comeuppance is round the corner!" Written by brice-18 on IMDb.com

@Miss Lucky. That's because Adam learned how to read people's expressions and body language very early in life. I think that he learned that because he witnessed Hoss's mother dying and he was around when Joe's mother died.

I love how each of the Cartwrights has his own strengths! Adam's is definitely like "spidey senses". Like Lynnette said in the comment above mine, I think a lot of his wisdom came from what he went through as a child; and I also think some came from his living on the East Coast for a while. He's had to adapt to quickly picking up on things.

Very good episode! Poor Dan Duryea, always the villain. On the positive side, he always made a convincing villain. Very good performances from him, Pernell Roberts as Adam and the fellow who plays the Clevenger pater familias. Thanks for posting

So did I. He always had a very distinct voice. I know what that's like because I have a very distinct voice too. I'm 65 years old, but my voice is the same high pitched voice that I had when I was in my 20s. My mother was the same way.

Dan Duryea was a good actor but he was an entirely different man in real life. Faithful to his wife Helen for 35 years before she preceded him in death. He never remarried. Faith to Helen until he died. They had two sons Peter and Richard. Peter followed as an actor for a short time. 😊

Gerald Eskith had such a devious way of killing the men that he was after. He pretended to wipe his brow with a hanky that he had in his shirt pocket but what he was really doing was grabbing his small gun. Then he would shoot the other man before that man had a chance to draw his gun. Thankfully, Adam realized this before it was too late and Adam killed him.
