Bonanza - Episode 74 - The Friendship - The Cartwrights convince the prison warden to free 23-year-old chain-gang convict, Danny Kid, imprisoned since he was an orphan of thirteen, and take him on as a ranch-hand to repay him for saving Little Joe from being dragged to death by a spooked horse.
The Friendship
Director: Don McDougall
Writer: Frank Chase
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 12 November 1961 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Joe Cartwright's life is saved by chain-gang prisoner Danny Kidd (Dean Jones), who has spent virtually his entire life behind bars. Out of gratitude, Joe manages to secure Danny's freedom. The rest of the episode deals with Danny's trials and tribulations as he makes the difficult and painful transition to life on the "outside." Written by rottentomatoes.com
Reviews:
"this story touched me in ways that remind me of how I never got to stay long enough in one place to make friends and how that isn't always the making of a true friendship. Danny Kidd saw a man in serious trouble while he was working on the chain gang at the Ponderosa and he automatically thrust himself into action to save him and said it was just for the horse. I didn't even believe that. When he asked for re-payment (in response to Joe) He asked to have the shackles removed from his body, he never dreamed that it would really happen. Imagine, you having to spend your entire life institutionalized since you were orphaned at 5 years old. Sent to prison at 13 because you defended the little food you received. Yet this 23 old man by the name of Danny Kidd was not an animal, just told he was one as often as they could to justify their cruelty. Little Joe saw the good human being in this man and was determined to stand by him. Thank God that young woman told the truth! there was an unspoken bond between Joe and Danny. As Ben put it at the end, "There go two wealthy men. Something that money can't buy... friendship." I found this story to be a beautiful one. True friendship and second chances in this life are rare. You have to make the most of either if they ever come your way." Written by carolyne-schopen on IMDb.com

I heard that Michael Landon, when he knew he was dying , asked his executives to do all they could, to see that all the series he had made, be shown for as long as possible. He understood the effect these programmes , with their homely stories and compassion, would have on people's lives. I think Bonanza, Little House and Highway to Heaven with their stories of family values , friendship and trust, help make the world a little better.

I watch Bonanza for the simple life lessons of compassion and treating fellow human beings as we would like to be treated ourselves. It is a welcome relief from the Trump era we are living in where common human dignity and common sense has flown out the window, where name-calling and threats against one another are almost becoming common-place, where wrong becomes right. I feel like I am living in a bizarro world. Watching Bonanza makes me remember that common decency and right and wrong are still alive and well in this world. We just have to work harder at finding it.

@@sheiladavis6523 My favourite bible verse, which I consider The 'nut shell' of the Bible, because it tells us of our need of salvation and also the way to salvation, by faith in Jesus, given by God himself. John 3 : 16 For God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten son, Jesus, that whoever believes on him, shall not perish , but have everlasting life ".

Even God and Jesus had good friendships. Abraham and Lazarus were friends. I hope to find a good friend that will be closer than a brother (sister). Amen

I liked watching Dean Jones playing Danny Kid in this episode. I remember watching him in a lot of Disney movies. He was an excellent actor!! Of course, that was before the Deep State took over Disney.

Unfortunately, today in we still have people in charge with the same attitude as the guard. July 2023, Texas is having a heat wave and they will become more frequent and extreme due to climate change yet the politicians have voted down a bill to provide air conditioning in prisons but did pass a bill to prohibit water breaks for workers. They're not governing for the people, only for their own interests, which is making money from the rich who fund them.

What's wrong with her coming on to him? She wanted to give him the chance to see what it's like to kiss a girl and she wanted the honor of being the first one. That was a wonderful sentiment. It's the part where she grabbed his memento and teased him where she was out of line.
