Bonanza - Episode 52 - The Fugitive - Adam goes to Mexico to investigate the death of a friend, only to face hostile townspeople and the dead man's wife.
The Fugitive
Director: Lewis Allen
Writer: Richard H. Landau (as Richard Landau)
Stars: Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker, Michael Landon
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 4 February 1961 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
"When Will Reagan receives news that his son Carl is dead in Mexico, he convinces Adam to go to Mexico to collect his body. But Adam is shocked when he rides into town, only to be told that Carl was a bad guy and he had a wife. Adam soon learns that his life is in danger if he keeps trying to get to the truth. A surprise awaits him." Written by Michelle on IMDb.com
Reviews:
"An old friend who used to work for the Ponderosa drops by and he has Ben Cartwright read a letter to him as Will Wright's eyes are not what they once were. It's from some sleepy Mexican town and it informs Wright that his son has passed on, no details. So Adam Cartwright volunteers to go to Mexico and seek answers.
It turns out that the deceased James Best was no model citizen and there's a great relief that he's gone. Still the local law Frank Silvera won't talk about it, the widow Ziva Rodann is unfriendly and Pernell Roberts gets beaten up by two locals.
Not one of the better Bonanza episodes, but anything with the presence of the brassy Veda Ann Borg is always worth a look. Veda owns the saloon and she's the only other Yanqui in the village. It's a typical and perfect role for her, her scenes with Pernell Roberts have the typical Borg bite to them.
I'd watch it for her alone." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"Main characters: Carol and Maria Reynolds
Main Bonanza character: Adam Cartrwright
Missing characters: Joe and Hoss
In this episode, Adam gets to travel to Mexico to recover his friend's body for his friend's father, but he is not welcomed when he arrives, and he's told that Carl was a bad guy.
This story takes several twists as he learns that Carl was married, is beaten and threatened to leave, and then learns something very shocking about his friend.
The story gets pretty ugly near the end. James Best, as always, plays a very good baddie with an attitude. You gotta love him!
I just wonder one thing. When they are in the graveyard and Maria learns the truth about Carl, her dress is very low cut - especially for 1961. Did they really wear dresses that low in the 1960's, or was it just not cut? I was a bit shocked...
Dead: 3" Written by mitchtmp on IMDb.com

It's beneficial to watch show's lke Bonanza and actors play out roles of different dimensional characters, we can decide which roles we are choosing to play out in our own lives. I've always loved the ethical , honest, and doing the right thing actors, and then I had to learn there has to be an anti hero, or bad guy, to contrast with the good guy, or hero, brings significance to the character, and attributes of this quality individual. And on Bonanza, and with the Cartwright family this is usually the enjoyment of this show.

Especially given the fact that he rode 1,000 miles there and another 1,000 miles back which would have meant at least 2 weeks of travel each way, a job in and of itself, all with NO compensation whatsoever; in addition to which he had a month of downtime, depreciation on his horse, placed his life in peril, all of that just to tell his old man a total fabrication. The way I see it, is cheating is wrong, even if you cheat YOURSELF.

But you know something? The majority of the time when one or more of the Cartwright family goes missing they all band together and start searching for one another, if not one of them then at least someone would, look how Joe went looking for Adam in the episode The Crucible and when he couldn't find him he did go get his father and brother and they searched for Adam for 2 weeks up until Joe and Hoss suggested that they go home because they had given up hope finding him, but Ben was so determined and was ready to give up until he noticed the man dragging the dead body whom was Adam dragging Kane plus there are other episodes where they would go looking for one another, but even in this episode, Ben already knew where Adam went and if he didn't eventually showed up he no doubt would have went looking for him and would question people about his whereabouts so yeah more than likely he finally would have went searching for Adam if he hadn't shown up after a certain amount of time. The Cartwright were most definitely that type of family 👍💯

Adam was hoping he would change his mind, but Adam wouldn't allow his former friend to hold up (& kill) people for the silver coming through .

So in this episode Adam disobeys an officer of the law, grabs a woman by the arm who asked him to leave her alone and pulls her to a table, and then shoots the child of a family friend , killing him, and then lies about it. Seems like the Cartwrights just make up the rules as they go along.

Worst storyline ever... instead of Adam finding out what killed Carl, he ended up being the one to kill him. He should have gone back to Virginia city when he found out Carl was alive.. the Cartwright's are always nossy

Yes, it was pretty bad, but interesting. Bonanza had some stellar episodes. But compa, this was a dud.

Adam had no choice. He killed Carl in self defense.
