Free Western Series: Bonanza - Episode 113 - The Good Samaritan - A jilted friend of Hoss can't seem to shake the bottle. When a woman and her daughter arrive on the stage the party that was supposed to greet them has left town.
The Good Samaritan
Director: Don McDougall
Writer: Robert Bloomfield
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 23 December 1962 USA
Filming Locations: Stage 17, Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
"The Good Samaritan" is Hoss Cartwright, who plays cupid for a pair of lonely souls: Newly widowed Abigail Hinton (Jeanne Cooper) and recently jilted Wade Tyree (Don Collier). After Abby and Wade are married, however, Hoss' well-intentioned help becomes a major hindrance. Also appearing is Noreen DeVita as Abby's daughter Bonnie.
Reviews:
"Hoss's friend Wade Tyree (Don Collier) has turned into an alcoholic since he got jilted. Before that Wade worked tirelessly on his farm.
Coincidentally, a single mom, Abigail Hinton (Jeanne Cooper), and her daughter, Bonnie (Noreen DeVita), arrive in town to marry a man who married a rich widow and took off for San Francisco. Hoss tries to get Wade and Abigail together.
SPOILER: After some misunderstandings and challenges, they actually do get married, but there are still emotions to work through and challenges such as a drought, exhaustion and pregnancy. Wade is mostly on the edge of frustration, depression and going back to the bottle.
Eventually Hoss is stunned when Abigail stands up for Wade against Hoss, but it seems to light a fire under Wade, who is ready and willing to fight for his family. Hoss is frustrated that people are so difficult, but Ben reminds him that is what makes people so interesting and rewarding, just as thunder foreshadows rain.
Overall a good, but not great episode with few surprises but good acting." Written by talonjensen on IDMb.com

Yep. And when people quit going to Sunday night bible study 📖 to watch these shows and movies 🍿. A great success for the whole family to desert God to watch other shows and movies instead. I know I sound bitter but I thought that it was a shame that people would rather watch movies than to hear the word of God spoken. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🥹🥹🥹🥹

There is no better place to worship your God than on his land. Then come in and watch your shows. Great family show which no longer exist. All there are now are reality Tv shows, or shows that show girls how to plaster their faces with so much paint because they want to be famous. The youngsters don’t treat people correctly anymore all they think of are themselves. We all need to bring back the family values that were around in the 60s & 70. When was the last time that families ate together.

I love how when Hoss gives someone a "talking to" how his brow gets all serious, his eyes pin point focus with no blinking, and only his mouth moves ... like a cartoon character. And his catch phrase, "Now you listen to me". Dan Blocker woulda been an interesting guy to meet. RIP Bonanaza peeps 🦋

He just needed to grow a backbone and his wife had to remind him that quitting was not an option. He had given up on life and became a drunk. Even though he married the woman with a child he still had given up on life. He needed that woman to remind him of his potential. A good wife can build a good man. A bad, complaining, whining wife can destroy a man, his dreams, and his family's future.

Naming this episode "The Good Samaritan" was a mistake because in biblical times, the Samaritans were a hated people, unlike the Cartwrights. The original good Samaritan story tells us that you can't judge any individual based on their nationality. It would have been more rational to have named this episode the Homestead Act of 1862.

I love how the episode starts and ends with a new version of Hoss's theme music, then at 6:00 we get the traditional version. I haven't been taking note, but do any of the other Cartwrights have their own theme music?

He lets his wife work like this. With her looks, she could get a rich man and not work at all! Move back east.
