Bonanza - Episode 83 - The Lady from Baltimore - Bitterly disappointed in her husband's financial failures, genteel matriarch Deborah Banning travels to visit her friends on the Ponderosa, hoping to turn her family's fortunes around by marrying her only daughter off to a Cartwright son.
The Lady from Baltimore
Director: John Peyser
Writer: Elliott Arnold
Stars: Michael Landon, Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 14 January 1962 USA
Filming Locations: Stage 17, Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Mercedes McCambridge guest-stars as Deborrah Banning, the wife of Baltimore publisher Horace Manning (Hayden Rorke). Having married for money and social prestige, Deborrah ended up living in poverty and obscurity due to her husband's many financial failures. Now living vicariously through her daughter Melinda (Audrey Dalton), Deborrah is determined that Melinda will marry a Cartwright -- any Cartwright. The plot thickens when Melinda rejects Joe, who loves her dearly, in favor of Adam, who doesn't. Written on rottentomatoes.com
Reviews:
"When the wife of a good friend shows up with her beautiful daughter in tow, Ben is happy to entertain them, not knowing that the mother plans to seduce Little Joe into marrying the daughter, so the girl can have the social standing the mother never had.
This episode is worth seeing simply for Mercedes McCambridge's nuanced performance as a manipulative, domineering woman who thinks that wealth is the only way to redeem her life's disappointments. (Her distinctive, faintly mannish voice works well with such characters.) Such good performances are rare on series TV.
The script is good, too, with some sharp dialog, such as the mother telling the daughter what she has to look forward to (and how she's obliged to obtain it), and Adam telling Melinda that ranching is built on the application of pain.
This episode isn't "great drama", but it eschews the loud, cheap theatrics that often mar "Bonanza". Even Lorne Greene uncharacteristically restrains himself." Written by grizzledgeezer on IMDb.com

Melinda's mom was a total jerk. She was a control freak manipulating and controlling her daughter like she did. Adam could see how much of a liar the mom was. I felt sorry for Melinda being forced by her mom into a marriage she didn't want. Of course, I think Melinda has a screw loose. Joe is really cute! Adam is hot, too. This was a great episode.

That mother is a completely reprehensible character. She has the gall to tell that poor husband of hers that he's never faced up to reality, whilst she's trying to realise her failed fantasies through a web of lies. It was excellent casting though. The face, the voice suited the role well.

How can Joe be in love with her so deeply after only a few days? This happens a lot on Bonanza. They all fall in love almost right away. The daughter was beautiful but the mother was evil. The Cartwrights are always compassionate, definitely a force for good.

When the women discover that Adam doesn't really care for them, they always steal a kiss from him, then he gets in trouble for it. And why do so many women feel like they have to lie, and put on airs for the Cartwrights? The Cartwrights are very well to do for sure, but they don't carry themselves as highfalutin people. All of that putting on is just so silly.

Oh, I love this episode of Bonanza from January of '62 (Season 3). The lesson of The Lady from Baltimore shows that one has to be content with oneself and not force their dreams/desires onto others to please them, like the Mercedes McCambridge character. The disappointment on daughter, Melinda's, face told the story. Yes, she was young and beautiful (thank you, Audrey Dalton), but she didn't really love Little Joe. Anyway, I thought the show was better with four Cartwrights. When Adam (Pernell Roberts) left in '65, it was down to three. Not even ranch hand Candy (David Canary) could save the show. Just wasn't the same.

In how many of these episodes is he always falling in love! And he gets saved all the time! Wonderful stuff.

Another superb episode. Mercedes McCambridge presented intense and engaging energy to her role. Hayden Rorke also was brilliant here. Audrey Dalton was great, too. Lorne Greene in this episode seemed somewhat awkward in his role. His character here needed more direction and maybe some script tweaks to get it right--again, tight production schedule. The closeups of the husband and wife in their emotional meeting was powerful drama; cinematic in scope. High drama in this episode, love it.

"Nothing is new under the sun...." Solomon. History tells of many stories like this when, people think that happiness is based on money and position. Think of all the wives Solomon had to put up with, to insure that wars would not be started. Think of the machinations of the Kings & Queens of Europe, of China, of Japan, of Africa, of the American Indians..... that they had to go through to make alliances and protect their territories. Love had nothing to do with it....for the most part. Think of the story of Cinderella....why did the Prince have to find a mate? Altogether, a gem of an episode of Bonanza. Should be shown in High School and NOT the critical race theory dog-and-pony shows!!! A good coal to light a fire of a discussion in Social Studies classes. Maybe for the soy crowd, PETA could be brought into the discussion!!

Excellent ending. Great talk by Ben. Why they love her is a mystery but they do. Unfortunately, an unresolved flaw. 28:59 Adam tells Ben that she doesn't love Joe, but then we hear nothing more of it. Why does Adam run away? We never see Ben talk to Joe. That's completely out of character. Did they cut a scene that didn't work? Probably should have had Adam talk about a feeling but not having evidence, so that it just wasn't enough to talk to Joe about.
