Laura's and Adam's wedding plans begin to derail when another man's kiss puts doubt in Laura's heart and a bad fall from the roof of the house he is secretly building for their new life together lands Adam in a wheelchair.
Reviews:
"While I don't want to give spoilers, I will say that from the beginning the viewer(s) receive, I dare say, an adequate idea of what is going to happen; just the title of this episode says that. In this particular episode Adam is engaged to Laura Dayton, (played well by the very adorable Cathie Browne)but she becomes frustrated when Adam continually misses times when he promises he will be with her: it seems that his work and/or business deals strongly interfere, intentionally or no. (Is it supposed to be comic relief when Adam misses his won engagement party?) Guy Williams who plays Adam's cousin Will Cartwright does his acting part well, by the way. So what's going to happen? Whatever the case, the ending may be joyful for some but depressing for others. It is definitely not a shoot-'em-up, but a love story which is also a character study, and I earnestly believe it will be forever unforgotten." Written by daviddaphnered on IMDb.com
"Far be it from me to refer to myself in the royal first person plural, but it makes me apprehensive about the reviewer. That said I have just seen this episode for, as far as I can recall, the first time, as I was a pre-teen while the show was still in first run on the early 70s. That said I believe this episode was as well written and well performed as any other in the long run of the series. Not only that, it is one that is based on what can really happen to a couple when one keeps secrets from the other, even when it is for a happy surprise. Neglecting a loved one especially a spouse or intended and even more a widow will leave room for doubt and confusion, and when someone comes in presenting someone more available can cause such a situation. It was a bittersweet episode which I found to be well done. No negatives from me, predictability notwithstanding. It isn't always the destination but the trip that is important." Carla...I agree. I saw something (odd or not very sincere) re Laura. The brothers and Ben, Will ? Some knew Adam was doing the house or could have easily found out. The story fails a lot when Adam is gone a lot, comes in later at night and falls asleep...and I think she could have or did know he had to be doing something for her. How much did she love Adam that she entertained the thought of another man. There are degrees of love & she did not really love Adam. Also, he bought her the wedding ring. I believe Adam loved her much more than she him & only he would know that by her ways, etc. I had a gut feeling about her from the start of show. Adam deserves a strong woman that does not act like a high school girl and one who loves him so much she would not be thinking of her damn self as she did. I did not like the unfaithful B and I did not like Adam help them clear their consciences so easily.

She obviously didn't understand or feel what real love means. Anyone who can fall out of love with her fiance and into "love" with his cousin so quickly is on an ego trip, actually subtly flirting with Will. Her nose was bent out of shape because Adam wasn't constantly at her beck and call. Will was a jerk for hanging around her so much, especially seeing how she was pouting. Then to kiss her! Neither one is capable of faithfulness. 😖👎👎😠

Adam’s reaction to Laura and Will isn’t so far fetched if you see the previous episode, they obviously clicked before this episode. What I don’t understand is, why Adam would be building his house on his own, he could have hired men to build it, and could still tout that he was the architect… anyhow, I just want to see the house that Adam designed, built. And Laura, dear, you forgot your daughter.

Adam has always been my favorite. But he should have taken his Pa's advice about keeping the house a secret. Laura might have better understood why he was never around and falling asleep. She kinda got shoved in Will's direction a few too many times. What was wrong with Hoss or Lil'Joe running her where she needed to go when Adam wasn't around. Whether it was something that just happened or not, it was still kind of done behind Adam's back. I love watching Bonanza, but the show could have had so much more happiness to offer if the boys could have married and had families.

That also would have pretty much spelled the end logically, and ratings wise for the show as it would have changed the dynamic and turned it into different show. Logically, three aging brothers who have a chunk of a prosperous ranch still remaining bachelors despite being more than eligible is strange in the real world of course.

Pernell Roberts had been a stage lifer before finding fame and fortune in Bonanza, in which he had to wear a toupee and found that the scripts were not precisely Shakespeare. When he got tired of it he announced his departure, which had meant the entrance of Guy Williams as a replacement but after he had a change of heart Williams became expendable. However Williams was luckily available when Lost In Space was being produced and he had his first hit since Disney's Zorro.

And I'm not ruling it out, but the older I get, the more settled in I am to being single. There are too many people who just settle for someone because they're desperate, or they think marriage is some kind of a goal, or that there's somehow a negative stigma to being single, etc. I like what a pastor on Moody Radio said recently about marriage. We loved all the Cartwright boys and I was sorry when Pernell Roberts wanted to leave the series after 6 years . The character of Adam was a great personality . When Guy Williams was brought in to replace Pernell Roberts he suited the role well . He made a great looking western rancher and fitted in fantastically with the rest of the Bonanza cast . Landon though didn't seem to want him on as a permanent cast member of the Cartwright family. I think there were some petty jealousies going on behind the cameras, and that was a shame . Michael Landon maintained the series could go on with just the three, Pa, Hoss and little joe . Landon was right it went on successfully for years after Pernell left . Bonanza really didn't need a new fourth member. It doesn't alter the fact that Guy Williams was great in the part of Will Cartwright . Landon was getting massive fan mail and I personally think he couldn't handle the competition when Guy Williams came along and was to be made part of the Cartwright family in the show . Williams was tall dark and handsome and suited the western attire beautifully . Landon proved to very petty really didn't he, in having Williams kicked off the show . Michael Landon was very cute , good looking, and so on , but he was no match for ZORRO in the looks department and I think he knew it . It was a crying shame that Guy Williams only played Zorro for 2 years, because he was brilliant as that character . To many Zorro fans Guy Williams didn't play Zorro, ..... he WAS Zorro . Walt Disney pulled Zorro of the air after having a huge litigation spat with the Network . They wanted ownership of the series and Disney would not give it to them . Walt Disney pulled the highest rated show on television at the time off the air and we were so disappointed,..... unbelievable. You would think both parties could have negotiated in some way . Zorro and Bonanza were two of the greatest shows on Television during my childhood . I'm grateful we can still see many episodes of both those television programs to this day, made possible for us through KZfaq. Thank you for this episode of Bonanza .

I understand why Pernell Roberts wanted to leave because after so many seasons there was no character development for any of the characters, don't get me wrong I love all the Cartwrights but they just kept putting them into similar situations over again. Also I think it was Lorne Green that talked Pernell into staying for another season.

It is always sad for me to watch this episode, knowing that Guy Williams, as the character Will Cartwright, will never appear again on the series. He only made five appearances, but I felt he was a major improvement to the cast and the storyline. Pernell Roberts (Adam) had planned to leave Bonanza, and the script writers had already made Guy Williams his replacement In the family. When Pernell Roberts decided to stay for another season, Guy Williams was cut from the script! I was very sorry to see him go, and felt he had breathed new life into the series. Then, later when they added the character “Jamie” into the family, I thought that was a big mistake. I couldn’t stand the personality of that character and his role in the series.

So much for writing him off the script because Adam ended up mysteriously ditching The Ponderosa. They seriously should of just brought Guy Williams back on the set after Pernell left but i guess they didn't do it because he was the only Cartwright who was married off.

When Pernell decided to stay on the show, the writers exited Guy from the show; a mistake, and better to retain Guy as a 5th Cartwright. Judging from Guy's spectacular performances in Zorro, he was the right fit as a Bonanza Cartwright.

Funny how people think or worse believe that these well paid actors and actresses are actually doing something out of the ordinary, ha? The emotional seduction of the facial, body language, the words, and facial expressions of pain or pleasure, the kissing and such, all mixed along with the music, represents a form of harmony and rhythm, a resolution of imagination and fantasies. And yet it's really our faulty constructs and good or bad identities we fall into. And this is what these well paid people get paid to do is entice us, thank you Bonanza.

A good show but this was one of the things that stifled it. Each character never got to be fully defined ( on top of multiple writers getting things wrong). Adam as the eldest should have been married and roberts be a recurring character. Would have worked well for both sides. Will should have been brought on so you could film more episodes outside of ponderosa/Virginia city. The best epsidoes of this show are the stand alone episodes with each character being challenged in some way ( crucible, tin badge, the quest, Gallagher sons, etc) on top of the episodes where the family was being attacked ( the legacy, the rescue, the gamble). Will would have brought the necessary dynamic for the show to keep going and having Adam married would keep it from being redundant about relationships. Mike landon ruined guy from being on this show. Guy even went on the record to say they had a big meeting as soon as he had his first day.....and he wasn't invited. I like landon but williams would have overshadowed him had he stayed. Seasons 10-14 are little joe on the ponderosa.

This show never fails to get me in 2 areas. 1. For a family that’s so rich and who live on a property as large as the Ponderosa, why is the main entrance and exit from the house go around the side of a barn rather than a grand driveway? Yes yes, I know; production costs. 2. For a family as rich as the Cartwrights, why do they do so much of the **most** menial manual labouring work around the Ponderosa rather than the hired help. I know Ben Cartwright wants to teach his sons the value of hard work etc but much of it is too menial for men in their position.

Piper... Many rich people don't flaunt their wealth and many certainly don't need a "grand driveway" to impress their friends and neighbors. And no, doing menial labor is not "too menial for men of their position". IMO, you have an odd perception of work and wealth. I dare say that nearly every farmer-owner, ranch-owner or logger-owner would scoff at the idea that certain jobs are beneath their position or beneath the position of their sons/daughters.

Why would they have four episodes of Adam losing a potential wife, child and house? Pernell was going to leave the show after the fifth season. Was the storyline supposed to give him an incentive to stay? Did the producer change his mind at the last minute on how he wanted the storyline to end, or was it the plan all along for Laura to end up with Adam’s cousin? Did Adam not get married because of female fan’s letters? Also, I read that Landon and Greene didn’t want the cousin on Bonanza because the two of them didn’t want any other male lead on the show to be a “Cartwright.”

Actually it was the fan push back, at the time, that put the kibosh on Adam getting married. The 'powers that be' just didn't think the possible loss of a huge segment of their audience was worth it, just to see ' Adam get married'. Not sure about Greene, but Landon didn't want the 'fan competition' of another good looking man in the show, to replace a good looking man, Pernell. Sounds petty, but I understand it's true.

Love is not a feeling, it the heart that yearns & longs for the substance that wills & drives to connect! The Joy of reaching out & waiting patiently for the other to reach out across bonderies & boders to reach out, that makes Love what it truely the joy to laugh, cry, feel pain & still welcome it, so that living in the moment becomes knowing & hoping for what is better & greater than the here & now! Lust can only last for a time? When the body has had enough it becomes a lack laster to the point of wishing that side of life would disappeared for ever! I do not think she truly loved Adam but the idea of being the attentition of his regard she found lacking in her late hunsband was shown so earnestly by another man! Will on the other hand was free of the oblication of any imminent responsiblity, so was therefore open to her wants & needs at a moments call! Thus, love or supposely want of it found it's way into the desire of embracing the pleasures of the senses in essence with the flash intermingling with the want & desire of what love must be!
