Choosing Your Uni

4 жыл бұрын

I was particularly excited to visit Bond University because it was one of the last universities in the country that I hadn't yet visited.
And man, was it ever worth the wait!
This place is awesome.... which, as Australia's leading (and almost only) private university, maybe I should have expected.
From stunning facilities to super strong student satisfaction ratings, Bond will appeal to many people.
Of course, the fees are a lot higher than Australia's public universities.
But if you're able to address that barrier, or can earn a scholarship, this is a uni that has a lot going for it.
Let's take a walk around and talk about what makes Bond University tick!
I've helped tens of thousands of Australian students to build their resumes, so there's super valuable information in here.
And what's my agenda?
Just to provide you with solid, unbiased advice. The rest is all over to you to decide what you do with it.

I was an exchange student at Bond in 2017 and it was absolutely incredible. I took courses in Communications, Media and Journalism (for my major back home) and I learned so much! Those were four of the best months of my life - it’s a beautiful campus, the community was very close-knit and small, and there’s a lot to do. I’m thinking about going back to Australia for my postgraduate degree!

For student satisfaction, yes. It’s a smaller uni and fees are high. But that means smaller class sizes and The focus is heavily on teaching rather than research (unlike those other unis) so the student experience is “better”.

If you are going to Bond in January you should make sure Bond is back on campus first. The May 2020 semester is wholly online due to the pandemic. I'd suggest you stay in either A or B Block to meet Australian students (ie. single room, shared bathroom on here bond.edu.au/current-students/services-support/services/student-housing/campus-accommodation ). Many of the American exchange students stay in the Accommodation Centre (standard share/ premium share). But you probably don't want to just hang out with other Americans when you are staying in Australia, and you want to meet the regular degree students at Bond not just the Study Abroad students. Book your on-campus accommodation well in advance, as it fills up quickly. Buy a Meal Plan as well, the food is good on campus. Bond is quite a community with lots of things to do on campus and quite a high percentage of students living on campus. Get involved with as many sports clubs and social functions as you can. When you leave Bond it will be the people you remember. Look through all the subjects at offer at Bond. Alot of the Americans seemed to study things like Australian Studies at Bond, and end up in classes mainly with other Study Abroad students. But there is alot on offer at Bond, and you will meet more Australians in the Commerce/ biomedical science/ architecture/ society classes rather than the Arts subjects the American study abroad students seem to choose. And bring plenty of spending money, because you will want to travel while in Australia to the Great Barrier Reef/ Port Douglas, Sydney, Melbourne, Ayers Rock, Kakadu, weekends at Byron Bay, as well as the activities and social functions on campus at Bond and on the Gold Coast as the costs for these will add up. Have a great time at Bond, your semester there will fly.

It’s got the best student satisfaction ratings of any uni in Australia. Grad employability is high and I’ve anecdotally heard that people form close friendships there because it’s a small uni. It has small class sizes so quality of teaching and teacher interaction is high.
@an_impasse

I’ve heard an anecdote from a relative’s former classmate that got a scholarship at Bond...apparently he said it was hard to make friends there because the people he met were stuck-up rich people, basically. That was back in...2012 or 2013, maybe? I don’t know how much it has changed since then and what other current or former students there think. I heard one of my former teachers for an immersion program I did went here.
@ChoosingYourUni

Hmmmm.... I would always be careful about heresy like that. It could be true... but that's just one person's experience. I've met and talked with a half a dozen students from Bond over the past year, including one who was on scholarship, and didn't hear a report of that. People enjoyed the community aspect of the uni, the small classes and direct contact with teachers. Bond ranks in the top couple of unis Australia-wide for student satisfaction. That wouldn't be the case if it was a deeply snobby, clicky atmosphere. That's not to say that elitism doesn't exist, maybe it does. But always be wary of considering an anecdotal "example" (i.e. one individual's experience) as a broad "trend" without further data.

An Impasse You are right. I went from England to Aus to study my full law degree at bond - can’t lie, being british had its benefits, the accent, stories to tell and what not, but there was 110% that cold shoulder that a lot of bondies STILL give to others in 2018/19. A lot of the students were brought up in private school - and went straight to a private uni. In England i went to a public school and moving to Gold Coast to study law at a private uni was a big change 😂😂 Long story short, there’s 3,000 people. Don’t be fooled by thinking “small uni, everyone knows everyone”. That’s not the case at all, Bond is fun when you find the right people to hang with. Like anywhere else, it has quite a large amount of people who look down there nose at others. If you read about it online it’s known for its snobby culture, rich kid sorta talks. Even after a night out in surfers, when coming home in an Uber and i tell the driver it’s to Bond, several times they said “wow well you’ve got money”. The fees are incredibly high for international students doing the full degree there IF your from the UK (no fee help) and be aware, you miss a single payment they come down on you like a ton of bricks! Before you even look at Bond uni, make sure you’ve got £70,000/$140,000 to spend, CASH. This place dosent do student finance! 😂

Yes Bond is a great university for international students. It is extremely international - something like 45% of the students are from overseas - and the Gold Coast is a nice place to live while you are studying in Australia if you like warm weather, surf, beaches and nightlife. Just be aware though that Australia's borders are closed currently (as of November 2020) to anyone who is not an Australian citizen or Permanent Resident. This means that international students can't come to Australia until the borders re-open, although you can study at Bond remotely.

Hi Linn, Bond is a great uni and student satisfaction is very high. Life on the Gold Coast is wonderful! You should also consider Griffith’s Gold Coast campus as Griffith has a good intl relations program focused on Asia. The best intl rel program in Australia is at the ANU, but the lifestyle in Canberra is VERY different to that on the Gold Coast.

You’re looking for a uni with a strong entrepreneurship and innovation program. The unis should also have a good business incubator. I really like UTS in this space. UTS Start Ups is a good program. I also like RMIT for their entrepreneurship program and strong industry linkages ans work integrated learning. But these are just two. There are many in Australia. Just be sure to look “under the hood”. Everyone will tell you that they teach entrepreneurship and support it - look into the detail, as some are much more supportive than others!

Sorry, a little behind on comments. Both these programs have strengths and weaknesses. Someone's made the comment about the specialisations, which looks pretty good to me. Bond is also private and runs an accelerated program, meaning it costs a lot more but you can finish sooner. Bond also has one of the highest student satisfaction rates in the country and smaller class sizes - two good advantages. Griffith is a bigger university with more options outside of class. Not that Bond is bad, but for things like overseas study, leadership programs, internships, and more options when it comes to open electives, Griffith will have a broader range imo

@@ChoosingYourUni Isn't this true that public universities are much better than a pvt one when it comes to quality of education in Australia? I am concerned due to its ranking.
@ChoosingYourUni
@ChoosingYourUni 2 жыл бұрын
That depends on what ranking you look at. For academic rankings they tend to be lower because their research programs are as huge as the big public universities (and research output is a significant consideration for most of the major rankings). However, for student satisfaction, Bond is like no.1 or 2 in the country! That’s a pretty good endorsement! They have smaller class sizes and more hands on teaching, which helps their rankings. So the answer is: it depends what ranking you’re looking at and what is important to you. I’d recommend you watch this video where I explain this in depth: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pJiCm7OAmru7qKc.html

I don’t fully disagree but I don’t fully agree either. Bond offers a lot of scholarships and education is an investment. Plenty of parents send their kids to private high schools where the academic research shows no real benefit to their children’s performance in higher education, yet leave their kids saddled with debt when they go to uni and pay on HECS. I’d argue that money spent on higher education produces outcomes an order of magnitude Higher than money spent on secondary school. And Bond has the highest student satisfaction in the country (and high graduate employer satisfaction). If people want to spend their money on education, that’s their prerogative. Who are we to judge?
