Kyle Thomson,there is no neutrals up there just the 3 phases,& depending on the Voltage there could be 1,2,3 or 4 conductors per phase,the spacers are to stop the conductors from hitting each other in high winds

Trimming tree's around this voltage even in a bucket truck and tree 25' from the wire, would give you a decent poke if it was a really wet tree. Awesome stuff.

Is this the link between the Marysville sub and flatlick at the Gavin power plant? It runs through southern or south east Ohio to the west side of Columbus? I literally hear this line hiss every time I walk under it, most voltage I’ve ever worked on is 500kV, would absolutely love to change spacers on this line

Yes, that is the line. This section is just east of I-71 and west of US23

Cool video, love these power lines. Does the high electrical potential and/or magnetic fields mess with the helicopter in any way? Also, as the pilot is it uncomfortable? I've heard lineman say it feels like ants biting you. Finally, can you hear the lines buzzing/sizzling over the noise of the helicopter? They're pretty loud from the ground, can only imagine what they sound like up close. Thanks.

Permaglo the electromagnetic fields will interfere with the VHF radio and transponder. So we turn those off when energized. We have an FM radio that is unaffected. When bonding on and off of the line there is a potential to blow out the intercom system, so there is no talking on the ICS while the arc is present. The pilot is unaffected by the electricity as long as we have our "hot suit" on properly. The frame of the helicopter also acts as a faraday cage so we are "double protected" almost.

Adam, How is it that you keep from getting shocked to hell and back up there? Is it due to not being grounded to earth? I notice when you approach a wire you always give it a tap with the top of your hand in case it is a hot wire your hand doesn't stay on the wire the same way my folks taught me to check and see if a fence was electrocuted. LOL!

Yellow Hammer we wear “hot suits” they are 80% nomex and 20% stainless steel thread. It creates a faraday cage so that electricity flows around us instead of through us
@yellowhammer4747
@yellowhammer4747 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for educating me on that. Nomex is the same thing our flight suits/jackets are made of in the military.

The suit he’s wearing allows the voltage to flow around him and make it less uncomfortable. And nothing happens because he’s not grounded. As long as he connects to the line like you see him doing with the stick and wire clip, he’ll be fine.

HOOLYY SHIT, that helicopter first had to keep the lineman away from the outer two lines and then the helicopter is right next to the neutral wires too.

No neutral on the transmission lines. Just the 3 phases of ac voltage. The neutral is introduced on the street transformer stepping down the voltage for household use.

It's so that the lineman doesn't get shocked as we bring the helicopter to the same potential as the powerline. We take a lot of caution making sure we done go "phase to phase" or "phase to ground" which would be catastrophic

Corvus if a tool jams and gets stuck to the wire, and then the aircraft has an emergency, we would be unable to get away from the tower. Safer to buy a new tool than to expose ourself to extra risk.
