What makes your videos so watchable and educational is that you are willing to point out, and often make fun of, mistakes you make along the way. Adding too much glue, dropping a tool, etc. I assure you, your demeanor has helped me even more so than the professional skills you demonstrate. Keep up the good vids and attitude!

"Gonna have to leave it at that" (takes another swipe) You've no idea how many times I've taken another swipe after saying, "Leave it!" and instantly regretted it...

We live in a bungalow built in the 50's and the section of plaster that delaminated received water damage from some old windows that were condensing like mad in the winter. Well, that condensed water was getting into the plaster on the cinder block beneath the window forcing it to delaminate, leaving an unplastered section about 18" x 12" in size. I'm going to try this repair method tonight so wish me luck! EDIT: Success!!!! I can't believe how well this took, not to mention how incredibly strong it is. So much so in fact when I tried to sand it down by hand, I nearly passed out. I'd definitely recommend a hand sander for this. But it looks great and blends in seamlessly. Thanks a million for this!

Literally doing this Tuesday. Super helpful. Same issue with leaky chimney flashing. Use a spray bottle with water to fine tune your mud, when mixing.

I'm watching your videos and LOVE IT! While some of the materials aren't available in the states, the procedure of tackling the jobs and watching/listening to you describe what's going on is truly a huge help. I just watched this video (there are probably several) about patching a plaster wall; I own a 110 year old house with lath, metal and plaster so thick that you need a router in every room to get internet. I did a Plaster of Paris repair once (not to date myself, but that project may have been before KZfaq) and it was HARD; not only in doing it but holy crap that stuff was unsandable!! Now I know of a different way :) I'm thinking if I listen to your videos while I sleep my subconscious will take over and I'll just know what to do next. I'm currently working on a 2nd floor total tear out bathroom where a pocket door was added and needed a "refresher course" on drywall when I stumbled upon your videos. Honestly... THANK YOU for producing the videos; I know you make some 'pocket change" from your videos and you deserve every penny and then some!! if you need a setting to do an OLD house plaster job for a video I have the setting right here! The issues are crackled wallpapered/painted ceilings, big cracks, removed plaster with exposed lath, a subdivided make-shift world war II bathroom addition over plaster (?how's that work?), pealing paint over glue from removed wallpapered ceiling, exposed metal mesh/lath ceiling drops, water damage, the need to cut out a wall to replace a stack and more! C'mon over - LOL. I would LOVE a recap of mud brand comparisons (Canada conversion to USA of course); I was just at HD and *thought* I knew what I wanted until I discovered they didn't have what I wanted. I went with an old familiar green lid all purpose premix BUT because of YOU I bought some 90 min setting mix and paper tape for the joints and know the value of adding glue to mud for specific obstacles - who would have thought! I also bought a hawk since I do love my large trowel I figured it was the next step to handling large amounts of mud at once! Keep making them and I'll keep 'feathering the like button".

I appreciate your videos. I would like to see a video on mixing mud, in particular a small amount for repair using quickset mud. The powder to water ratio has always been a challenge for me. Too dry then too wet, add more, too dry,...repeat. Throw on wall before it sets up (not literally but close to get it on fast).

What's amazing is how easily it looks. It's fun to watch an artist work.

I would never have thought about using carpenters glue. I usually use a weld like plaster weld or similar bonding agent. Thank you for your great tips.

Interesting approach! I had chosen a (2K) resin and thrown sand with huge grain against the wall. Once hardened it is like sand paper, pretty common for coatings on the floor. With acrylic resin, you can work afterwards pretty quick and this is extremely durable.

Precisely what I am dealing with here in southwest coastal Florida. 60's duplex was repiped and the workers cut holes in walls and ceiling. I'm patching the holes with drywall but I am discovering delamination. This is the perfect video to help me deal with this.

Thanks for this. I was doing some repair to my 1940 built house. It has 1/2 drywall covered with 1/2 inch cement with a thin plaster vaneer. I had some areas where the plaster veneer came off. I'm going to try your glue method.

And you sir, have the skills to pay the bills👍 im a professional high end, new construction home, painter. And with that, comes needing the know how, tips and tricks of drywall. And i can honestly say. You have made my life alot easier with alot of your videos. I have always despised any kind of drywall work. But since i have been watching. I actually volunteer for it, when its time to do some at work. And i enjoy the break from painting from time to time. Wher as, before i ran away from it. Vancouver Carpenter When I first started mudding on my own, I had some issues with my mixing setup. So I decided to use warm water, even hot water once. BUBBLES! The cooling effect of the mud created a thousand tiny bubbles in my coats lol. Live and learn. If only your channel was around then!

Your trowel work looks like art. You work that mud like you've been doing it for 40 years.

Very well done. But I have to say, I've never had fast set delaminate on me. I make my mix a little on the too wet side which helps in adhesion. I also use durabond 90 for my initial and follow up with sandable 90 or 120 depending on how much I need to do, then I top it off with my finish coat of topping. Works perfect every time.

I’ve done many repairs like that, i’ve always used a concrete bonding agent (looks and smells a lot like white carpenters glue and water mixed). Good thing about using that is that you can also use it around the house for any concrete work as well.

I'm fine with mixing mud of most types; even thinning box mud. What would possibly be helpful is proper knifing with proper pressure and finger placement on the 6"+ knives for the beginner and home mudder. I've worked with professionals but I look every so often to find new ideas.

I must say, it is very refreshing to learn from someone who lives and educates for quality work! There is always a lot to learn from you, even from mixing mud. ;-) It would be great to give mixing advice and mud comparison (incl. mud consistency which then is useful for your global audience) for the different coats and purposes. Your videos are just great, educational and highly appreciated. As inspiration for future videos you could consider that even initial drywalls can be a pain and can have its own challenges which then have to be fixed e.g. uneven butt joints. You taught us already separately abt coating butt joints and flat joints but how would you coat a ceiling where horizontal flat joints meet vertical butt joints like in a chess board of rectangles? Starting with the butt joints and then the flat joints or would you finish it combined as ceiling sections? It is the skim coat, which now has to handle some imperfections and make the difference in the end... Thanks a lot for being our hero of quality work!

What I see on almost every working chimney that is covered with plaster is stains. The problem is condensation from colder inside air and hot chimney smoke. To avoid it, before painting plaster around the chimney, waterproof it, seal those pores, If the chimney if made from brick. Stainless steel chimney wont leak. If the roof patch around the chimney is leaking because of rain, first fix that patch with tar, then walls. Question for Ben: Have you ever used fiberglass tape insted of paper tape? Not mesh but full fiberglass tape. Keep up the excelent work!

Mud mixing video, got my popcorn ready!

I often use Kills primer before skimming over with All Purpose mud and let dry overnight. I let the Kills dry to tacky. Works great when feathering over painted surfaces. Kills sands at the feathered edge well too. I typically have several days to do drywall/plaster repairs because I'm doing room remodels.

@Vancouver Carpenter, in a few of your videos I’ve heard you allude to the cheapness of wallboard and drywall compound. I’d love to see a video of you chatting about the pros/cons, different building environments where they’re used these days, tools, and just general banter about the materials. I see multi-million dollar new construction houses that still use 1/2” drywall 24OC hanging from trusses. Surprises me that the use of plaster (or veneer) isn’t more apparent in higher end homes.

I’ve got a old plaster wall house. That I’m making repairs to. What I usually do is use a oil primer to seal all the walls, fill in my worse areas with durabond 90 indoor/outdoor joint compound. Hot mud one coat and use premixed green top USG thinned out with a little water for the final skim coat. Little to no sanding. It works but a slow process. Have you ever used oil primer to seal old plaster walls

Elmer's glue is pretty much the same thing as Bonding Agent and like BA, you can cut it 2-3 times with water to make it more workable. A gallon of bonding agent is about 12 bucks at Home depot

Our drywall finisher is havaing a really tough time with air pockets. It’s really gotten worse the last year. Seems like it’s mostly over wide butt joints that are painted. I know that the painted surface absorbs water at a slower rate so that explains a lot over the painted stuff but it’s also showing up on the new drywall as well. These guys do great work but we’ve got to get this problem solved.

Your videos are AWESOME! Unfortunately, although I scraped all the loose paint off my ceiling, I DID NOT add the glue/water mixture to the bare plaster, nor did I add glue to the drywall compound when I applied it to the crack line to smooth the wall. Question: HOW CAN I FIX IT?

I assume regular concrete binding agent would work as additive, e.g., Quikrete or others? Main question: I have some filling in to do on old plaster board/built up plaster ceiling. Would Quickset or other 5- or 20-minute mud would work without mesh? Probably build up with three or four coats, some areas needing upwards of one inch build up. This is in an area that will then have crown installed. Thanks for any insight.

I've never tried the glue. I will have to try it. I'd probably just prime it and mix all purpose or taping mud and 20 together. It always takes for ever to dry with plaster. The ceiling looks like it was drywalled already so no chicken wire in the corners. You going to tape the corners? Thanks, great video.

I tried this. Works great. Thank you! Only complaint - once set, this stuff is ROCK HARD. Maybe I'm doing it wrong by thinking I should be doing any sanding of that coat, but it's too late for that now. Worst part - It's on the ceiling... Any tips?

This is almost identical to the issue I'm currently dealing with right now. My current issue is it's freak'n cold here and not sure if the leak in the chimney is fixed. The worst part is we are trying to sell that house and can't until the leak is for sure fixed and then wall patched up and painted. Ugh.
