That is a cap and ball pistol. With the barrel pointing up you used a gunpowder dispenser. Put in the paper and ball compress with plunger then seal with wax. The hammer strikes a cap which sits on those little knobs. You might want to check the Springfield Armory. They also were licensed to produce the Colt Navy.

Looks like a Pietta Colt, the brass part looks identical to this modern reproduction. imgur.com/gallery/nDjjE Only the barrel has a slightly different shape but the pins etc all look the same.

Ok, so from what I have researched so far, I have come to the conclusion that it is in fact a gun made in the mid 1800s by a non US gunsmith, that is a euro model 1851 Colt Navy. Patent N stands for "Patent Navy". Basically its a Euro model 1851 Colt Navy made in the mid 1800s, not a 25-50 year old reproduction, but an actual mid 1800s Euro made Colt Navy. Som basically a gunsmith in Europe(likely Russia), copied the Colt Navy... Btw, the mid 1800s Euro 1851 Colt Navy has the 2nd finger rest also. The extended trigger guard allowed reins to be tucked where your middle finger would otherwise be when shooting from horseback. I believe the maker in Europe made this one with round barrel, and a different "dragoon" style hammer section as opposed to traditional style ones. That brass looks extremely nice, almost too nice to be from mid 1800s. You could get the spring replaced in it and get a nice 1 piece grip for it, and it would be perfect. I don't believe it will ever fire again, the metal integrity is too weak to try. Here is a similar example of it. Also included is a link to a 1 piece original nice grip that would go nicely on it. Gun example: qsy-complains-a-lot.tumblr.com/post/149290070614/russian-colt-1851-navy-copy-manufactured-in-tula 1 piece original 1851 Colt Navy grip: www.ebay.com/itm/324571342796?hash=item4b91f5a7cc:g:EsMAAOSwq7RgZ9RG

I did not have all the detail of the gentleman above but I recognized this as some version of about an 1847ish colt. Search Walker Colt Black Powder Revolver or colt dragoon. They were black powder and lead ball percussion cap revolvers. They were the evolution step before cartridge revolvers.
@RichardAHolt
@RichardAHolt 2 жыл бұрын
Being a black powder gun, a measured amount of powder was 1st poured into a chamber of the cylinder. A paper or fabric patch was centered over the chamber with a lead round ball projectile then pushed into the chamber surrounded by the patch. The patch created a very tight fit for the ball in the chamber, which was then rammed up against the powder charge in the chamber using the lever device under the barrel. This same process was done for each of the cylinder's chambers. The groove to the right of the hammer was used to fit a percussion cap over a hollow nipple at the end of each of the cylinder's chambers. When struck by the hammer, the chemical in the percussion cap would ignite, passing through the nipple into the cylinder to cause the black powder to explode and projecting the round ball out the gun's barrel.

So a couple of observations. 1. The front end (barrel and loading lever) appears to be from a Colt 1851 Navy. 2. Colt 1851 Navy revolvers were "cap and ball" or percussion ammunition systems. To load, you pour a measured amount of black powder in each cylinder chamber, place a wad, then your ball, and use the loading lever under the barrel to seat (push) each ball into the chamber. 3. Your revolver, while still possessing an appropriate barrel and loading lever, appears to have been converted (or an attempted conversion) to use cartridges. The cylinder is bored all the way through for loading rounds through the rear of the cylinder, the hammer now has a "tooth" for striking the primers of cartridges, and the brass frame has had a portion removed on the right side so that bullets may be loaded from the rear. As a cartridge conversion, the loading lever on the front would no longer be used. 4. Colt 1851 Navy revolvers did not use brass frames. Current day replicas do, and some Confederate copies did, but they are rare collectors items even in the states. This may have been fabricated specifically as part of the conversion, or is a modern replica part. 5. The spur on the trigger guard is unusual. On revolvers of this era, this would be a common sight on a Smith & Wesson No. 3 Russian, but not a Colt. It speaks again to some "custom" work being done on this revolver as it was being converted. Lots of guns originally manufactured as cap-and-ball were converted to fire cartridges after the fact. This has a lot to do with Rollin White's patent on the "bored through cylinder" expiring in 1869. This may be a period conversion, it may be a modern one. It's hard to tell from a video, but those are a few of the things I noticed from the video. I should also mention this is not a Colt factory conversion of an 1851 Navy. Those models, such as the Richards Mason conversion and the Thuer conversion, differ significantly from the revolver shown. Hope this helps!

The extra finger rest on the trigger mechanism reminds me of LeMat black powder pistols prior to the American Civil War. It may be worth the investment in having a good restoring gunsmith take a look at it and perhaps preserve it....it most likely will never be fired again but the value and beauty of the pistol is it's history and wear and tear. You said it had a patent and NY on the cylinder but could it be NO instead...these were manufactured in New Orleans, Louisiana. You don't load paper loads and bullets from the back end, young colt.....it's black powder so there is a compression lever on the bottom of the barrel that will help you tamp down the powder charge and wadding and then a lead bullet. They were also manufactured in England and France during the middle 1800s so it makes sense that it would make it's way to Holland and other countries thru Europe. Super find..congrats.

It's amazing to see how well the parts came out, especially the receiver. In case you or anyone else has the desire to fire it remember that uses black powder and not smokeless powder. If you use smokeless powder it will explode for sure! You could put in a couple of grains of black powder and no ball if you wanted to fire it without damaging it. Of course, that's if the barrel, cylinder, etc are in working condition. Even as a wall hanger it's one of the best finds.

I forgot to mention that this revolver could be used with three different types of loads. The first is loaded directly into the front of the cylinder. It's powder, ball, and wax. Second is a paper cartridge loaded from the back. Third was a foil cartridge loaded from the back. All three types required a percussion cap to fire.

Amazing find and restoration. If you could find wood pistol grip for it would be amazing complete collectors artifact. Rare finds like this help bring back some of our lost history. I am amazed that WD40 soaking for a year remove all that rust and dirt. Learn something every day. Be safe and thanks for taking us along on this fantastic find. 👍📹 it is similar to a 1800's Colette gravity pistol.This Colette pistol is before the 6 cylinder revolver model. It has the extra finger grip. During this period of time there were a lot of gunsmiths trying to come up with new designs to market to the military and general public.

Modern firearms are packed in grease when they’ve been stored for years. Brass is a softer metal ; the barrels are sometimes charcoalized which hardens the steel better and may have been better than blueing. The cylinder is six so slang would be six gun . The numbers were hand stamped. I didn’t know Hannie did this great job men .

You will probably find it is a Russian copy from around 1842 possible produced in Finland. Have fun with your journey. A company called Uberti do a Colt navy replica along with a smith & wesson model 3 which can have that unusual trigger gaurd.

@@BondiTreasureHunter It's highly possible it's a one off commission piece, It looks like a cross between a Colt navy with a Smith &Wesson trigger guard. Try sending Uberti some photos and ask them for help their twitter is @Uberti_USA

Wow what a find that was! It looks awesome now that your friend the expert go over it! What are you going to do with it now? You could get a display case for it and maybe a couple pictures of more old guns and have them placed around your gun,get a little something to write the date or close to it and put it close to the gun. Just ideas I’m sure you can come up with plenty of ideas. I’m so happy for you,way to go mate;it couldn’t happen to a better man. I’m looking forward to seeing more from you and the gang! Happy treasure hunting my friend. Great videos Nicky.🤟🤟Yee

Aloha Leigh & Hannie! I started wondering how the owner of the gun lost it. Was he an American merchant mugged on the docks, & before he could grab it out of his waistcoat, he was unconscious floating in the water,& the gun fell out?? Or, did it accidentally fall out as he was boarding a ship or boat, & he sent his servant in to retrieve it, & the servant drowned? (My imagination)! 😉There HAS to be a story behind a valuable custom Gun like that, ending up in the canal. It may have belonged to a traveler, not a resident. Hannie did such a good job cleaning/putting it back together!!😊
