Lyrics:
Brown girl in the ring
Tra la la la la
There's a brown girl in the ring
Tra la la la la la
Brown girl in the ring
Tra la la la la
She looks like a sugar in a plum
Plum plum
Show me your motion
Tra la la la la
Come on show me your motion
Tra la la la la la
Show me your motion
Tra la la la la
She looks like a sugar in a plum
Plum plum
All had water run dry
Got no way to wash my clothes
All had water run dry
Got no way to wash my clothes
I remember one Saturday night
We had fried fish and Johnny-cakes
I remember one Saturday night
We had fried fish and Johnny-cakes
Beng-a-deng
Beng-a-deng
Brown girl in the ring
Tra la la la la
There's a brown girl in the ring
Tra la la la la la
Brown girl in the ring
Tra la la la la
She looks like a sugar in a plum
Plum plum
Show me your motion
Tra la la la la
Come on show me your motion
Tra la la la la la
Show me your motion
Tra la la la la
She looks like a sugar in a plum
Plum plum
All had water run dry
Got no way to wash my clothes
All had water run dry
Got no way to wash my clothes
I remember one Saturday night
We had fried fish and Johnny-cakes
I remember one Saturday night
We had fried fish and Johnny-cakes
Beng-a-deng
Beng-a-deng
Brown girl in the ring
Tra la la la la
See, brown girl in the ring
Tra la la la la la
Brown girl in the ring
Tra la la la la
She looks like a sugar in a plum
Plum plum
All had water run dry
Got no way to wash my clothes
All had water run dry
Got no way to wash my clothes
Brown girl in the ring
Tra la la la la
Look that brown girl in the ring
Tra la la la la la
Brown girl in the ring
Tra la la la la
She looks like a sugar in a plum
Plum plum

Brown Girl in the Ring" is a traditional children's song on the islands of the West Indies. Originally part of the children's game of the same name, thought to have originated in Jamaica (Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett are both Jamaicans), its lyrics instruct the game's performance: a girl enters the ring, formed by children holding hands, and performs a dance. The recurring reference "Sugar in a Plum" is a Term of Endearment, e.g. Darlings, sweetheart.

I'm 48, thinking of the 1980's often make me weepy. Then everyone used to take care of each other and the whole neighbourhood was like one family - Now we do not even know who lives next door and our children care about their privacy more than their parents and siblings - We have downgraded from a selfless to an extremely selfish world in less than fourty years.

"Brown Girl in the Ring" was one of several fun childhood ring games growing up in the Caribbean...because there was lots of dancing. 💃One difference though, we'd sing, "...she looks like a sugar an' a plum" meaning "sugar + plum = sugarplum", a term of endearment. The 2nd part they're singing says, "All head water (source of the river) run dry, Got no where to wash my clothes..." A song from when people still washed clothes in the river. Thanks for the childhood memories, Boney M.

"Brown Girl in the Ring" is a traditional children's song to the islands of the West Indies. Originally part of the children's game of the same name, thought to have originated in Jamaica, its lyrics instruct the game's performance: A girl enters the ring, formed by children holding hands, and performs a dance. The song became internationally known when it was recorded by Euro-Caribbean vocal group Boney M. in 1978.

this song reminds me of my childhood when we children used to dance in social clubs and families were present in these social clubs for self-entertainment amid happiness that overwhelms everyone..this was indeed one of the beautiful memories that we, the people of iraq, missed because of the problems of wars and destruction that my country has been subjected to due to bad the conduct and administration that accompanied the iraqi state since 1921, that is, since its establishment

"Brown Girl in the Ring" is a traditional children's song in the West Indies. It was originally featured in the game of the same name, thought to have originated in Jamaica. Boys and girls play ring games in many parts of the world, especially during their pre-teen years. In There's a Brown Girl in the Ring, an anthology of Eastern Caribbean song games by Alan Lomax, J.D. Elder and Bess Lomax Hawes, it is suggested that ring games are a children's precursor to adult courtship. Players form a ring by holding hands, then one girl or boy goes into the middle of the ring and starts skipping or walking around to the song. The girl or boy is then asked, "Show me your motion". At this point the child in the center does his or her favorite dance. If asked "Show me your partner", he or she picks a friend to join him or her in the circle. It has been played for many centuries in all of Jamaica.

In the song it is talking about The Bahamas because the foods in the song are Bahamian cuisines and the game is played in The Bahamas, like in other Caribbean countries.
