Throughout the years I've lived in Phoenix, Arizona, I've only been on day trips to Chiricahua National Monument. This has never left ample time to explore the park. I finally decided to do something about that. Camping overnight at Bonita Canyon Campground finally provided me with the opportunity to fully experience the park.

Today we traveled to camp at a different National Park - Chiricahua National Monument - in the southeast portion of Arizona. We camped at Bonita Canyon Campground where we tour the campground, explore the Visitor Center, and show you what it is like camping in this remote but stunning area of Arizona.
Bonita Canyon Campground is located within Chiricahua National Monument. The campground offers 25 sites as well as one group site. Due to the remoteness of the campgrounds, ground fires are not permitted, however, standing grills are included on every site for cooking purposes.
The open season at Bonita Canyon Campground runs from early October to early July, closing for summer months during monsoon season when flooding is potential.
There are some tricky areas to navigate within the campgrounds and as such RVs, motorhomes, and trailers are limited to a length of 29 feet.
The campground has no nearby general store and the nearest town of Willcox, AZ is approximately 37 miles away so it is best to be prepared and bring supplies on your way in.
Bonita Canyon Campground is located in bear and mountain lion country. Food, utensils, cooking appliances, pet items, coolers, and scented items must be stored when not in use. If campers arrive in a closed hard-sided vehicle, that may be used to store items or campers should use the National Park Service storage containers which are provided at every site.

Oh, you should definitely check out the North Rim if opportunity presents itself. We both think highly of it and it is almost like an entirely different experience. We have a few videos on the campground and overlooks on that side too. 👍

We'll try what we can. Not having one ourselves we can't offer first hand info, but we'll always try to keep in mind what info is offered by the park as well as what we notice. 👍

We had a pet skunk and never got rabies. We had squirrels and never got rabies. ..I think they tell you this so you will just leave the little ones alone…I am at site 12 .. I’ve also boondocked 5 nights up the canyon along Piney creek.

Great video! Thanks for focusing on campsite distances, like you, I’m there to hear and experience nature at its finest not others activities but of course, to each their own . I’ve never camped at Bonita Canyon before but will consider since my RV is only 21 feet in length. And since bears have such a great sense of smell, love peanut butter / honey (and so do I) I think I would still use the food lockers as a precaution rather than risk anything tearing in to the RV. Excellent point on the firewood too. Again great video, looking forward to the next one.

Thanks! Yeah, definitely try to get out there some time if you can! Well worth it. If you prefer seclusion, and want a National Park quality experience, Chiricahua/Bonita is the way to go!

There are signs a bear is in the area. Scat, paw prints, uprooted logs, scratch marks on trees and look up in the trees (first place scared cubs go). I've seen sooo many bears (some too close for comfort) but have yet to see a mountain lion or even a sign of a mountain lion. Get bear spray if you are concerned (works on mountain lions too).
@CactusAtlas

I carry sumthin a bit…louder, to deal with things like that. But bears don’t want anything to do with people, bear attacks are incredibly rare - I don’t expect to ever have to worry much about it

Just found your channel and subbed. I've heard of this place before but wow looks amazing. Thanks for showing what some of those campsites look like, that is helpful for a tent camper like me. Looking forward to watching your other videos. I might try to stop here on my way back from Big Bend TX in Feb.

First a correction, monsoon season is late June through early October. Lions, tigers and bears, Oh My..... How about rattle snakes? I live in Sierra Vista and the last time I was there with my parents there was a 2-foot green Mojave rattle snake snuggled up against the stairs to the visitor center. Everybody was freeking out. Finally, a Ranger came along and encouraged the snake to move. It was great entertainment. I didn't believe there was such a thing as a green rattlesnake, but, there it was.

Interesting. Our news usually marks monsoon season as mid June through late Sept. Then again this year, we might have to change it as Phoenix has seen NOTHING. 🥵 Green rattlesnake? Oh my indeed. We finally came across our first after all this time not too long ago this year. Wasn't green though! 😅
