Crowther had long past his sell-by date for the NYT, but Kael was not his replacement at the Times. Kael was the film critic for THE NEW YORKER. Fun fact: the undertaker's (Gene Wilder) girlfriend was played by Evan Evans, wife of John Frankenheimer.

This video is woeful, making grand statements that can't be backed by a cursory look at the films. It's too black and a white. The New Hollywood didn't create the auteurs, they've been around since time for decades. Nor were they ushering in a gritty and pushing out the escapist, for they always travel side by side. What changed everything was the repeal of censorship in '68. As for bringing in feminism - you may want to do a search for how the Banking Foundations that backed it and what their purpose was in undermining the family unit.
