Air layering of shimpaku junipers 3 months ago in late winter early spring in video here: • How to air layer - Ste...
Now the results!! Very easy to air layer shimpaku junipers successfully and its mainly about the timing. Start them in late winter/early spring, select strong healthy growth and 3 months later they should be good to go.

Winter in the US but I’ve been wiring branches to air layer off in the spring. Do you ever wire them first, if so have you noticed any effect?

Yes I’ve wired before air layering. I normally give the wired branch a year to establish before I air layer it.

Nice video. I think spagnum moss holds a lot of water. How often do I need to water them? Of course I need to check with my finger, but it would be hard to check both spagnum moss and regular potting mix together and decide whether it is time to water them. Should I place them in full shade for a couple of weeks and in full sun afterwards? Can we repot those after 6 months by fully removing spagnum moss and filling with akadama + pumice + lava rock?

I haven’t had any problems with watering after I repot. Just water normally like your other trees. I put mine in semi shade for the first couple of months. I wouldn’t touch the roots for at least 1 year.

I just had some success with my first attempt at a maple. Would the approach to after care be the same as you advised for Juniper?

I would keep the maple in more shade especially avoid the afternoon hot sun.

I have an air layer I have done in winter that is still attached now April what would my best approach wait till spring?

You can either remove now or wait until late winter. The key is how much root growth they have had. If a lot then no problems removing now. If not much then wait until late winter.
