I've never seen such a wonderful Bonsai, artificially harmonized rocks and trees. I met Mr. Masahiko Kimura accidentally in this museum. There were some fans from Canada, Netherland and some other places. This showed his fame was spreading all over the world.

木村先生の石付作品は自然を凝縮した深さがありますね。これを人為的に作り上げるのは石までも創出されるそうだから・・・・・これはもう誰にも真似できないかも。まさに日本人の心の中のふるさと自然でしょう。盆栽全体どこをとっても無芸な部分がない芸味の凝縮　全体のバランスの素晴らしさ　一位や真柏何をとっても嫌味のない素晴らしい形状で誰しもが好む姿を創出されますね。神の手だと思うし人間国宝になってほしいと思ってます。登龍の舞なんかは日本盆栽史上最高の盆栽だと思います。こういう盆栽を作ることができる若い方がもっと出てきてほしいと思います。山獲りができない時代だというけど半月もしないうちに山が丸裸に伐採整地され住宅地になる時代・・・・山木の天然素材を盆栽にする方法を考えてほしいしそういう根付け技術の継承も必要でないか　　　このままいくと盆栽やる人も減っていき　天然素材を山出し出来る人もいない　山は無造作に伐採　　たとえば四国の一位山が個人所有で合法的に山取りされてますが　何か合法的にたとえば杜松の山木なんかを山出し出来るような方法はないモノか・・・・盆栽が日本の文化だというのであればそういうところを何とかできないモノかと思いますね。

This is all very stunning work. In a way Bonsai is kind of sad in that I analogize it with super models. They are the mainstream public eye of how people should look; slim, curvy, elegant, but it all comes at a price. There is liposuction and botox injections, and plastic surgery, and cramping the toes into high heels. Its really detrimental. Not saying its bad to be in shape, but going to such extremes on a daily basis is not healthy. Bonsai trees do have it easier in a way. They could be pulled from the pots and be left to grow as they were to begin with, let their leaves and roots grow out and let their hair down. Is that so bad? Its nature. I do Bonsai too, so who am I to say?

the trees usually live longer and are healthier as bonsai, assuming they are cared for properly, than in the wild where diseases, pests and weather damage and shorten the life of the tree...nature tourtures the tree in the wild, bonsai on the other hand is analogous to a method actor who appears tortured but is not.

I'd be the first to admit that I don't know all that much about bonsai, but this work strikes me as very odd and somewhat kitsch. It seems like the artist has taken the aesthetic of scholar's stones (which is already quite extreme) and fused it with bonsai - not to great effect. Maybe I'll learn more and come to appreciate Masahiko Kimura, but that's my first impression.
