im autistic and was hyperfixated on bonsai when i was younger, i was never allowed to start my own bonsai but i always watched your channel, i finally started growing my own trees for bonsai recently and plan on buying some starter trees whilst i wait for the seeds to germinate, and so i have come back to your channel. it is such a comfort and very insightful, thank you for doing what you do! you made my childhood and hopefully will continue to help me on my journey with bonsai.

Thank you Peter. As well as bonsais, I love horses very much. In the horse world, there is a saying thst goes: “don’t knock the curiosity out of a young horse”. With your method of teaching, you ensure this does not happen to bonsai learners. It is the best and more effective way to support beginners as you show and implement the principles, making this art form look easy and accessible to all. It’s just brilliant.

Thank you for always sharing. I made my first bonsai 2 months ago out of an Austrian Pine. It did not die and in fact it's shedding the old pine needles and bushing out with new needles now. I plan to do more bonsai and niwaki in my front yard.

Self recording is working rather well, the camera is auto correcting the colour balance when you stand behind the tree which isn't a big issue but you should be able to stop it doing that by disabling auto colour balance. But let's be honest, the camera knows the real star here is the shirt :)

Let me just say, that the first time I bought a bonsai, It was in Mistral Bonsai (Spain) in april 2016, and what a concidence that you were giving a free exhibition there! I didn't really understand much, as it was my first contact with bonsai, but it's magic got me. I found your videos a couple of months ago and instantly remembered you from that time. This must have been the first time ever in my life that I saw someone wiring a ballpoint! I think it's a great idea and that it's very instructive. Personally, I can also recommend this specific Picea: it's quite ideal when you want to practice wiring and pruning and I do have a few of those myself. They're also cheap and also "keep you going": they never stop making lots of new budds... However, there is another reason why you will be invited to keep on practicing wiring: this species has the habit of trying to grow its branches upward again, even when you remove the wire after the branches have come into place, which could be after 6 to 12 months. Even quite old specimens do that, so you will have to expect some new wiring needed, after a while. But then again: a bonsaï is never "ready", isn't it? You could see it as a kind of a journey you make, together with your tree: a journey thrue time and you will both develop and reach new levels. Perhaps an additional idea: watch mr. Chan's video about propagating from (heel-)cuttings. Heel cuttings from Picea Glauca root quite easily and you will not find them cheaper than that... Propagating from cuttings also gives your bonsaï hobby an extra dimension and an almost endless source of new material and experiments. And all of that, without stressing your budget! Mr. Chan, I salute you and I am already, like so many of us, looking forward to your next video!

@@peterchan3100 Thank you mr. Chan, I am really honoured. Although I am not a newbie in bonsaï, thanks to your instructions I managed to improve my soil mixtures with good results. But perhaps most of all, after many failures, I finally managed to propagate Japanese maples succesfully after watching your video on that quite a few times. And so I now have a lot of them, even quite a few Deshojo's (!), and it all gives me great pleasure. I am very well aware of the fact that they will not grow that fast because they are not grafted. On the other hand, in general I do like the smaller (shohin) bonsaïs even more than the larger ones (although I'm growing several of them) so that should not be too much of a problem. And of course, they will have a beautiful trunk from the beginning, with no graft marks at all and I will be able to manipulate their growth (formal or informal upright or even cascade) from the start. In two or three years, I will start a few little forests with them, amongst individual projects... There is one very peculiar thing that I noticed from Deshojo cuttings, not from cuttings from other maples. I took several cuttings last year and that same year (late summer, begin fall) they rooted and grew a few leaves. One of them grew four leaves and made a few seeds already. Another tiny cutting which I made last year (late summer), has now rooted, is growing two leaves and also already shows a few seeds. I never ever saw that with any plant and it puzzels me, although it seemes to me that it is a good sign. They both are only a few centimeters tall! Does that sound familiar or is it just good luck? Of course I am going to give those seeds a chance, by the way: another experiment... Congrats with 260.000 abonnees: that's about 10.000 more in not even two weeks, if I'm not wrong! That, I think, speaks for itself. I wonder what this BBC show will add to those numbers... Happy potting and repotting!

Hello Peter, I'm a retired 67yr old man who has been into Bonsai for 25+ yrs and I learn something new from every one of your vids. Also in the past I have kept away from the various Pines as I found it a bit too scary. But no longer after viewing a few of your Pine vids and plan to head out for my fav nursery here in Inverness, Fla. to search their entire stock for the perfect Pine. In closing I much say " I enjoy your very colorful shirts and find your vids very delightful in every possible way". Could you please do some more content around the topic of ground sourced trees to use as bonsai, also the large one you recently decided to cut on your property. I feel like there is alot of plant wastage that could be utilised with thicker ground grown things being harvested for bonsai instead of ending up in a woodchipper.

Question (and climate trend observation): After midsummer, here in the northern Midwest of the US, nursery stock is generally reduced in price as the July/August weather becomes very hot and transplanting season resumes in September/ October. It's easy to find bonsai specimens at that time, especially dwarf conifers. I really like the "scratch and dent lots" where damaged plants are very reduced in price. Should I wait to transplant these and hold them in their nursery pots until more clement night temperatures even if they are very root bound? I planted a dwarf birds nest black spruce (Picea mariana v nana), that was languishing, into a nice, deep clay bonsai pot. Should I have nursed it back to health before doing root work? It's very nice, and was very cheap, but was damaged and wilting. Now in shade but is casting its needles. Wait and see? ANY TRICKS TO HELP IT ALONG?
