Ideally we collect moss from sunny spots, like roofs, old rail tracks, or even concrete slabs, because this moss will thrive on your bonsai. Try to collect clumping types of moss, that stay in place on the soil surface. To grow moss year round, it helps to put the moss on a bed of chopped sphagnum moss. Unfortunately the moss intended for use in bonsai is not what grows down here in the super hot, humid, and sunny region of the southeastern USA. I live in North GA, the Atlanta area to be specific, and the moss down here tends to be crawling hypnum types of mosses. It's essentially like grass, but it's a moss. I've had some clumping style mosses shipped to me but they're hard to keep happy in the southeastern sunlight. They eventually adapt but it takes time, and can be a bit aggravating to keep healthy. I've gotten to that point where whatever grows naturally on the top of my soil is what I get.

Can I use moss for indoor bonsai? I tried it but mine are getting brown and yellowish. Maybe it's not possible
