I used cheap plastic lunch boxes this year as training pots, works great. Just drill holes in the bottom. You can use the lid as a tray.

True, true.. there is a difference between a container and a plastic pot tho.. containers are some what unreliable when it comes to frost or strong sunlight.. some work, some doesnt!

My grandparents were from Sweden I miss them so much it was nice to hear a Swedish accent. I live in Hawaii and iam so far from Sweden I miss Sweden too .

hey mate hows it going? i tried the kitty litter soil thing after watching your vids, seems to work well, very free draining! i have a couple of questions however as i have no experience using a "substrate" as opposed to "soil", so any advice would be greatly appreciated. i got the non clumping 100% some sorta clay variety. 1 you seem to use it straight from the bag? this didnt work for me, got all clogged up, had to sieve it first. 2 as it drains so well would i expect to water much more often than with regular potting mix/soil? 3 i assume there are no plant nutrients in this substrate? does this mean i need to fertilize more? i live in queensland, Australia and it is winter here at the moment. i have always been told not to fertilize over winter, does that still apply or should i maybe give a light fertilization to get my plants through winter? thank you. cool vids bro.

So nice to hear from you michael whyte! The specific product that i use here in sweden is luxury for us bonsai freaks cause it's low on small particles now dust at all almost..But if you have to sift it, sift it! thats why we/i use it straight from the bag. There is very low percentages of nutrients in kittydama, catlitter, this is the part is where you come in.. Yes you will have to water ALOT more now cause it will drain more often, but thats a good thing.. besides water, air is the most important part for roots to actually thrive and grow... If your plants are in dormancy (winter) there is no logical way or use of fertilizer, your tree is on a low, and sleeping...thats why we fertilze strong over summer months so energy and goodies are stored up in the tree, so after winter sleep the trees can push out new growth hard.. a strong start! Stay true, like, sub and comment for much more..!

what happens with poor quality pots in winter?

They might crack and roots get exposed to cold - which ultimately leads to roots dying from frost damage.

+Soumyadip Kar Hi Soumyadip, you can buy them from bonsai nurseries, from certain garden/pottery shops which stock them, or buy online. In Hyderabad city where i live, ceramic ones are costly since they are imported from other cities or China.
