How to bud select candles on Japanese Black Pine bonsai Autumn Fall work on black pines

Japanese black pine bonsai work in autumn/fall on bonsai that are in refinement stage is all about bud selection and needle plucking to balance the energy. This technique is used in conjunction with summer decandling work that must be done before you can do this. At the cut zone there should have formed multiple buds which now you must reduce back to only two pairs. Also needle plucking to balance out the energy in the tree is also done now.

Hi David, thank you for the video. Can you decandle in spring/bud select in autumn for most pines. I have lots of radiata in development here in New Zealand. Cheers

Only two flush pines can be decandled. Radiata mostly acts as two flush if we have warm summers. Most years it behaves like black pines here in Melbourne. Last year was very cool and it didn’t put out a second flush. It’s very overgrown and healthy with candles now and ready for decandling. Hoping for a warm summer.

@@Bonsaiworx thank you that’s very helpful. I’m assuming on single flush pines you only cut say half the candle instead of fully decandling then? Would this be appropriate to create ramification?

Yep pretty much. You need to leave part of the candle alone. Bjorn did a great video on that with closeup detail.

Great video mate... I need as much info on black pine as I can... very informative.... Got 1 question.. I'm in Adelaide... and repotted my 2 black pines over Easter...posted pics on your clubs FB page.. can I still bud select and pluck... or leave tree...?

I personally haven't repotted and then bud selected and needle plucked my pines. I repot in spring so haven't had to make that decision. I really can't answer that one properly or from experience. My instinct would be to leave it alone, but you maybe able to do at least bud selection. I'm not entirely sure. Sorry.

Hey i have a question. Du you balance the candles in spring or is that only done with White pines? If no should i even do it with my white pine ?

I don't do the balance of candles in spring on my black pines. Some people do on the really strong growth. As Black pines are double flush pines (two lots of growth per year) I remove the entire candle in December (summer). Single flush pines you treat differently where its the timing of the pinching/cutting of the candles, but you don't cut the entire candle off. I mainly have Black pines and you treat them differently to white pines (single flush pines).

Each candle is a branch. A candle, once it grows and elongates has many needles which do not form branches.

@@Bonsaiworx ok so a candle is those little bundles you find on the grown? Are all pines the same? I have a long leaf pine thats in bottle brush stage on my property. Its a weird tree and things are always messing with it. Bugs birds and all other things. Its incredibly cool.

Yes, the candles appear in clumps at the growing tips in late winter early spring. They continue to grow through the growing season and will form branches of left alone.
