A tree is a tree, a pot is only a pot. It does not become a Bonsai until these two are combined and form a harmony together. A large part of the art of Bonsai is the experience of a tree that has become detached from its ground and now lives in a pot.

Actually, many containers can serve as a pot for a Bonsai tree, if they meet certain requirements. There has to be drainage holes of course, and wiring holes so that the tree can be fixed to the pot. They may be made out of ceramic, concrete, plastics and certain metals (metals may release toxins) and one can make their own pots. But what is considered a classic Bonsai pot is that it is made of ceramic or porcelain, and that it is stoneware burned, which means that it absorbs and holds no water in the material. It is important for the health of trees.

When I worked in a bonsai shop, I appreciated a customer who brought photos of the tree with measurements of the current pot. Helped so much in selecting the right next pot.

I should have paid more attention to the video and the new app. I have a 3Y bonsai I bought and need to replant as I'm not sure much about the root system so was preparing for the upcoming repot and bought an 8in diameter and 3 in deep pot. My tree heigh is like 5 inches to the top of the tallest branch and maybe like 1inch trunk. Probably good to just clean it up and repot in the same pot, but I likely almost killed it I didn't check the pot after getting it today.

The light blue pot at 1:33 will not appear on any tree. Same with deeper blue pots I often see.

At 0:43 in the video, there is a beautiful two tone brown pot, could you tell me more about it please? Just wondering if it's and old or a readily available modern pot.

Desings like that are quite modern. The only problem finding one would be just that - finding one among the countless available desings and shops. Best idea is to take the picture and go ask around :)

I have a ginseng ficus (grafted) that I have to repot asap due to them not being in proper bonsai pots with drainage holes. Are they ok in bonsai pots or do they need to be put in a deeper pot for more growth?
@bonsaiempire
@bonsaiempire 4 ай бұрын
Well it depends on the rootball, so repot it and make sure you have a few pot options available.

@bonsaiempire ok thanks for your time! I figured it needed to be a pot that gives the roots room to strengthen, grow, and breathe. What's the title of the video explaining this particular detail? I've seen a few but don't recall which one is the right one. I'll rematch this video in case I missed it.
