I am 81 yr old. Too late to start THIS hobby. That said, I paid 40$ for a juniper and ended up chopping over 1/2 of the green growth off and ended up with a mutilated tree. Whatever. We will see what it looks like in a year, assuming I am still here😋

Sounds like you did the right thing then old timer. :) That's what you got to do to make it look good in the future. And you can learn and enjoy a hobby and make a sweet bonsai for your grandkids to cherish and refine more than hand on to their grandkids in those three decades+ you got ahead of you. 🙂 Main thing is if you enjoy doing it I guess. Idk but they say that even just having a hobby and learning it and enjoying it and looking forward to it progress etc in your latter years can both increase your lifespan and just sort gives something to keep you going i guess... and also help keep your mind and body healthy and stave off things like dementia. (I mean not every hobby i assume... probably not my other hobby mma cage fighting and stuff like that haha but bonsai might be ideal. ) Best of luck anyway my friend and God bless.

In Japan bonsai masters will work many years on trees they know they will never see the final form of, instead they work to make it better for the next generation of bonsai enthusiasts, you could do that and leave the trees to someone

Absolutely incredible. One suggestion for the end: an example of a "finished" pad so that we can see what a good-looking pad would look like. Thanks you so much for the great effort!

Now this is exactly what I needed. Shown in detail, explained, on how to try to develop pads on Junipers. Nicely done man. My junipers are my "trouble trees". I have just never gotten the routines for developing them properly. The result is, my Junipers are examples of my years of mistakes and lack of knowledge. Too late this season for any trying to start new on mine, so this will help me next season..I hope....

Love this format for detailed work and also that you took the time to show the progression. Often we get told what to do but not the longterm affect of why we are doing it and therefore it could take months if not a years to understand the why. Showing us the desired outcome really brought the understanding home for me. Really appreciate it!

I've got two Mondo 8 year Junipers with carving I did myself on them and Jin work with really poor structure, I needed this video more than words can say to elevate my trees into a better place with design and future styling. I can't express true gratitude enough mate, I'm on the other side of the state from the best clubs in Melbourne and with a son it's hard to organize a time with meet ups. This one video is a rare gem indeed, stuff in books is great but this birds eye view stuff is in my opinion excellent way to display material. I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this presentation, I'm going to purchase some merch from your store as a way of supporting what I feel is one of Australia's best sites. Great work Josh bro!!! keep absolutely smashing it, I can't wait to see if you've got videos on JBP's. I have several promising ones in my side yard I'll be working closely with in 2024.
