Join Eric on a behind-the-scenes tour of our bonsai growing grounds (aka nursery, aka "The Farm").
3:57 Take a look at some of the largest 2yo Japanese Black Pine Eric's ever seen! They're in 3" x 9" Anderson bands.
- Root over rock Japanese Black Pine (some for the Bonsainut contest: www.bonsainut.com/forums/the-...)
5:56 Why did Eric decide to start growing all these plants?
7:14 preview the 1yo JBP bareroots - we're currently pre-selling a limited quantity that will ship in mid-January 2022: www.bonsaify.com/products/bar...
9:11 One of Eric's favorite project trees, read this blog to learn more about it: www.bonsaify.com/blogs/phutu-...
Plants shown during the tour include:
- 1 year old Kishu from cuttings
- Texas Cedar Elm (2yo)
- 2yo Cotoneaster
- Crepe Myrtle
- White Chojubai
- an old Monterey Cypress that has been twice ground grown over the years!
- a large section of Grewia - Lavender Star flower (the bee's love 'em!)
- Washington Hawthorn
- Birch seedlings
- Cork Bark Elm
- 2" and 3" Junipers
- a big Trident Maple
- Limber Pine seedlings
- Larch
- More Junipers
- Dwarf Jade: so much fun to grow!
- European crab apples
- Olives from cuttings
Are there any plants from this tour that you'd like to see Eric share more about on this channel? Let us know in the comments! Please like and share this video, and be sure to subscribe to our channel!

Thanks for sharing, My 3 seasons room is starting to look like your farm! I'm hoping that the hundreds of seeds I collected this fall and hardwood cuttings will work out and I am looking forward to what spring has to offer.

I watch this Bonsai nursery and others as well. Makes me wonder if I should be watching any of them? I believe that on some level that watching these videos takes the Magic out of Bonsai Mysticism.

My nursery is actually on top of a pillar shaped mountain in China. To get there you have to meditate for three days and then walk up 1234 stone steps. I figured it'd be easier to just let you watch a video though.

Jealous, that is a great looking cache of trees. My garden has been filling up over the last year with deciduous trees mainly but Mrs F does not want many more without seeing some looking like bonsai.

Some really great starting materials for bonsai. You should start some trident maples from a good mother stock too. Pretty much everything you have on your website(young materials) I want to order! Thanks for showing us your growing area.

Hi great to see the nursery tour your grewia have tried to grow from seed in UK but unsuccessful possible the seed available in UK any idea we’re I can get fresh seed
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 жыл бұрын
They are relatively easy to propagate via cutting - so if you can find a hedge or something start there. I have not tried to propagate with seed. Although the tantilizing possibility of randomly better genetics make it tempting to try.

Bery nice video. Really enjoyed seeing this. Can I ask how much wire and fertilizer you get through? do you use cheaper fertilizer for all the whips and seedlings to save money?
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 жыл бұрын
We went through 40 Kilos of Aluminum wire this fall! 😱 And for fertilizer, using a concentrated fertilizer is better in a nursery. Even Dyna-gro is too expensive, granular fertilizers are inexpensive and work well, or concentrated liquid.

Peter Chan of Herons Bonsai gets terrific growth by letting the roots escape into pea gravel floor inside the glasshouse and outside too. He periodicly cuts off the roots growing outside the pots, as if they were sacrificial roots. The weed cloth you have, might fix the weeds but don't you think it is slowing down the growth of your stock ?
@Yurup
@Yurup 2 жыл бұрын
One of the problem peter chan also has is that his roots arent as developed as they should be considering he has a bonsai nursery. He does a lot of things right but also takes shortcuts at the wrong time.

@@Yurup ... All bonsai nurseries who are growing/stocking prebonsai trees in traditional pots or in the ground are very likely to have poor roots - unless their pots are air pruning pots, colanders, net baskets etc I have seen many finished exhibition quality trees with bad roots or circling roots. The aged bark makes the judges blind to basic flaws. I would rather buy young trees for prebonsai from a tree nursery that uses Air-Pots than buy it from a bonsai nursery which uses traditional pots bcos the latter are most likely to have bad roots - unless the bonsai nursery is able to assure me that they have done root work and the trees have radial fibrous roots and zero root circling. Look at the containers used by bonsai nurseries for air layering and you get a good sense of how informed / ignorant they are about air-pruning benefits. Nothing beats air pruning pots, specially Air-Pots which are the best in class. Manual pruning is a poor substitute & happens only AFTER the damage of root circling has happened - unless it is done pre-emptively & periodically.

@@Yurup ... I have recently started a playlist called Bad Roots. 1. The Japanese Larch video shows very bad roots at 9:46. I refuse to accept these are rare. The type of pots used by bonsai nurseries tells me this is very common. 2. A two time prize winning Japanese bonsai expert admiring a seriously flawed root system at 3:41 (how it happened is irrelevant). Bonsai experts preach one thing and practice something else altogether. I have another playlist called Bad Trunks - Inverse Taper. Have a look at the hypocrisy of the experts - its bad for amateurs but good for experts ?

Hi Sir, You have a huge collection of plants.Glad to see them.🌲I have a question. I started growing few Japanese black pines from seeds about five months ago. But they have grown to the size of a thumb and now they are growing very slowly. I used a mixture of coco peat and sand. Also, I live in a tropical climate. What should I do?
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm. Generally they would want some dormancy, and that is the right time to trim and repot. But it's hard to say for sure as i've never grown them in the tropics!

Looks like this is the only listing on Ebay right now: www.ebay.com/itm/233985076052?hash=item367a98eb54:g:JjAAAOSwH09ZEcHh The seller I got them from took their listing down I guess. Finofil is the brand, it's from England. They're the only ones I've found that don't break within 1-2 years of use. (Those blue ones in the thumbnail are already broken.)
