5:31 As a bonsai beginner, I’ve recently discovered ‘mica’ pots and want to share this find with other newcomers. These pots maintain the classic clay pot aesthetic but are much more affordable. As someone still honing my skills and growing my trees, I found it hard to justify the cost of expensive pots. Mica pots are a great solution for those still developing their bonsai journey.

Thank you for an interesting video on how you go about collecting your bonsai pots, they are getting very expensive now for the armature bonsai collector especially Japanese pots which I can’t afford to buy so I tend to buy good pots from a couple of U.K. pot makers were I can, they are reasonably priced, it’s the same old story you get what you pay for. Being in the U.K. we are not able to buy or bid on your trees you sell due to restrictions on imports to this country. To some extent if you are rich you can buy anything your heart desires and have the very best trees and employ people to look after the wellbeing of your collection. Peter Chan has just been to Taiwan and was amazed at the quality and size of the trees in private bonsai gardens, what is clear is that the owners of these places are very rich so can afford to create these beautiful specimens and have the staff to maintain them, so what I am saying badly is every thing is relative we are jealous of his trees and he is jealous of the trees he is seeing, to quote him “ he would give his right arm for one of them “ as we would of his. Joe.

No so much a question, but a request. Would love to see the progress of trees you've worked on in the past (if you still have them). I'll watch styling videos that are years old, and always wonder what those trees look like today. If you could revisit some of those trees, that would be so cool!

Dr Chang, I will be there in Oakland for the auction. How am I supposed to compete with a Multi Millionaire like yourself? The best trees will not be available to beginners. Now that you have a business, it behooves you to buy all the best trees to make Bonsai Heirloom successful. I congratulate you and your Staff on a great website. Best wishes ❤❤❤

John Nakayama told us that for us to a tree a Bonsai, it had to be in a pot for 10 years. There are many nurseries that charge ridiculousNa prices. They get trees from regular nurseries and charge 100 dollars and more.

Dr Chang it is nice to say to get Bonsai at auctions. Many years ago at least 30, A respected man sold off his Bonsai collection. Everyone was given a tag too buy a tree. A millionaire from your area came in with 25 people and put tags on all the big trees. Yes the sale’s went too charity. Just Sayin.

Hello from New Zealand, just wanted to thank you for sharing your knowledge and passion. I've been learning the art for more than 30 years myself and as you know you never stop learning. I particularly want to endorse your soil mix. I had been following the advice of those who recommend totally inorganic mixes and some of my trees have not been thriving but a change to your formula is showing significant improvement. Keep up the great work, it is valued and appreciated around the world. Thank you.

Thanks for great information you put out. I have a couple of trident forests I’ve bought in the past year and want to combine them to make one large forest planting. My springs get very busy with construction starting so how soon can I start separating them and replant them, I’m in central Illinois and weather is in the mid 20s right now. I do have an unheated greenhouse.

Hello Milton. I recently found your site quite by accident and greatly enjoy your videos. I am curious whether you have experience working with either Hornbeam or Cotoneaster. Any of your training insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

I love hornbeam, Korean hornbeam…birch family…I will do a video soon so stay tuned! Cotoneaster has beautiful berries but is susceptible to diseases…like fireblight…so I stay away.

Milton, what do you think about put the pre-bonsai in felt grow bag instead of ceramic pot? Other people say that they are very good for cultivation and rapid growth of the tree when it is young.

Any thing that works for you work. Everyone has different watering habits. For me, I don’t think it would be better than plastic nursery pots.

Do you have any tips from your yamadori collection days? I'm moving from Southern California to the Midwest soon, and have five fruit trees in my front yard i need to dig and take with me. 🙈

Cut back leaves drastically in proportion to the root loss and so so when there is NO leaf. It is almost not worth the trouble…But small trees in 5 gallon when you get there and you will have fruits in two years.

Hello Milton and thank you for your wonderful and educational videos. Do you happen to know where I can buy some smaller to medium Deshojo maples? They seem extremely difficult to find in the U.S. or online. Thanks! Brian

I’m probably only half your age; but, you look healthier than me. You have more top hair than me too I think 😅 What is your diet and exercise routine? 🤔 I jog every other day, 3mi… but I also eat a lot of fast food (for convenience and low price). So, I am relatively unhealthy imo. 😅 I do drink a health shake every other day tho. 🍌🍓🫐🥬🥛

You tell me yours and I will tell you mine (kidding)! Balding has nothing to do with age. Nothing wrong with fast food if you choose carefully. I love Panda Express' Kung Pao Chicken! Make sure you add vegetable and fruits. Your running is good. I ran a lot, finished one marathon and decided that is a bit over doing it. You run a good amount, but add anaerobic to aerobic exercise. Increase weight gradually! Stay healthy!

Hello Dr. Chang. Question : what are some tree species that will root in water ( my experience using rooting hormone is not so great ) had some luck rooting ficus benjamina and such. Could you name a few tree species ( that are desirable for bonsai ) of which their cuttings can be rooted in water? Thank you and keep up the good work
@bonsaiheirloom
@bonsaiheirloom 5 ай бұрын
I think most plants will root in water…but you have to change water every day, I think. Why not use a good rooting mix? Perlite and Vermiculite as recommended by UC Davis. Check out my video on best starter material for bonsai: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gNJ2nMuX3N6RXYU.html I recommended elm the most. Zelkova, and maples.

I don't like that you feel wrong about taking money for your trees!! Would you skoff at a painter who asks for money for his paintings? Or a man who made a fabulous piece of furniture from wood stock?. Or even a potter making a bonsai pot? Your trees are your art! Don't feel wrong about that. I do love these question and answer videos. Thank you
