I started when I saw @bonsai releaf first video. I then found @herons bonsai and finally you just last night. The first was very tranquil and inspirational. You and Herons are very very educational and I thank you! I went to my local nursery and picked up a Dwarf Alberta Spruce about a week ago. In comparison to the ones you and Herons work with, it's very young and pliable. I brought it home, inspected it and started the design process. I took about an hour trimming and imagining the future of the tree. I cut one apex and the thing looks amazing!! Since doing that, I've found your videos and have learned much more. The biggest piece of info was when and how to trim and wire. I worry that I've messed up by cutting and bending this late in spring. I also cut the needles off of the inside of the branches and didn't think much of it until this video. I put it in a bonsai pot, with the soil it came in as to not induce too much shock. Two part question: Did I screw up by trimming like I did, during this season? Would it be healthier in a bonsai mix soil? I'm going to upload a video right now of it as it is if you'd like to take a look.

awesome content and i'm someone who used to grow bonsai but haven't for 25 years due to moving around and travelling the world etc.. I'm going to get back into it so this was great, I'm a huge fan of pines/conifers etc as bonsai so there is where I will be concentrating my efforts.

I love my spruces. Good starter trees. The dwarfed needles on mountain peaks are so different than what's at lower altitudes in the same area. I wanna plant trees high up and see what happens. Like Mr. Miyagi. As long as they aren't invasive of course.

What happens with the gouging or indentations the wire make in some of the branches? For example as seen here 16:25 I know that tree damage is essentially permanent and they heal by absorbing the wound, but does that affect tree lifespan?

I was able to rescue a couple dwarf alberta spruce from a neighbor's yard - they have nice trunks but long branches. If I pinch the tips back consistently, will they back bud and branch closer to the trunk?

I started a Ponderosa Pine from seed and was shocked by how long the needles are. It seems to be a slow grower, but it is just covered in needles. should I just wait and see or start some needled ;plucking to reveal the structure. Based on the needles I imagine this species is not a good candidate for bonsai?

Hi I’m new to bonsai i have a picea Alberta globe and finding it a pretty difficult tree to style due to its very full foliage at the end of the branches what would be your advice?
@philipnorthfield
@philipnorthfield 4 жыл бұрын
The Picea Alberta are not commonly used as bonsai despite having small needle growth a lot of people get one early on in their bonsai journey but few seem to ever become specimens. I have had one for about 10 years just a little pinching early seems to be effective at redirecting energy to weaker areas lower down combined with removal of third shoot where they originate at the same point. I have had reasonable success so far tree seems healthy and vigorous and back buds fairly strongly. I am in the UK and pinch top late spring. Structural pruning late in the season.
