Happy New Year everyone! While I prep season two I’m sharing a couple of bonus episodes with you. They’re conversations from my last podcast, Don’t Ignore the Elephant. I covered the things that no-one else talks about, and it touched a lot of people at the time. They’re subjects I’m really passionate about as a breast cancer patient myself, so that’s why I’m re-releasing them now as part of ‘So Now I’ve Got Breast Cancer’.
This re-run is all about taking the fear out of death and dying, with Palliative Care Physician Dr Kathryn Mannix. After listening to Kris Hallenga talk about her living funeral and coming to terms with the end of her life, I thought this would be the perfect listen. So many people got in touch when it aired the first time to say it had brought them peace, and I really hope it does the same for you.
You can find out more about Kathryn’s book here (www.kathrynman...)

This was so comforting and informative to me. My mama is 92 and sleeps a lot. She has stage 4 kidney disease but still does her own cooking and light cleaning. Sometimes she goes for walks on her walker for 40 minutes by herself! Thank you Dr. Liz and Dr. Kathryn for this discussion especially on what to expect about the changes in breathing. My grandmother was a very powerful medium. I only have a tiny bit of her gift but enough to know there is life after death and our loved ones are always near us. As scientists you may not believe in this but as scientists you also know you cannot destroy energy and that’s exactly what we humans are: energy. ❤❤❤ ps: during my short stint in the trauma unit, there was one particular attending who, after the call was made, ALWAYS asked for a moment of silence. God bless this man.

I have Stage IV lobular cell breast cancer, now dealing with multiple spinal boney metastases. On my last day, i can say that i have loved and been loved by, wonderful people. Nothing i have done, nowhere I've been, nothing I've owned can trump that. I have had an amazing life and have no regrets.

I think we need to make a distinction between 'being dead' and 'suffering on the way to being dead'. As an atheist, im not afraid of being dead. I hope not to suffer too much in the process of getting there. I found my patients varied between worrying about what was on the other side, and worrying about the process of getting there.

My concern is pain in my last days because i live in a fairly remote country area and the nearest inpatient palliative care is some hours from home. I dont want to be lonely as i leave this life
