What I love best about Nureyev is his unique ability to embody complex emotions with his face _and_ his body. What’s equally wonderful is that he had the generous capacity to make his partners better actors than they were without him, and I think we can see this best in Fonteyn.

And I am grateful for that athletic competition. I grew up in the 60s and 70s, and for me, watching the type of dancing they did then, now only has sentimental value. Ballet, like everything, has evolved. You can't compare what they did in the 60s to the grace, skill, stamina and brilliance of the dancers of today

There is the entire ballet done with Lynn Seymour from 1979. By that time Rudy's technique was no as good but he still was amazing. He just has more passion here. Maybe it is Fonteyn although Lynn Seymour was a wonderful dancer. There is some kind of passion between Rudy and Margot that is pure magic.

What is always missing in performances is magic and emotion. This performance is the magic of ballet between 2 performers. Beautiful to watch because it pulls you in. Mikhail is the greatest performer of all time because he was perfection. He combined it all in his own performances. This is the best I've ever seen between a male and female on stage. Very moving.

I’m sorry but I respectfully disagree with your assessment. Baryshnikov may have had an arguably better technique, and he was able to perform at his technical best for more years: he was a great dancer but he wasn’t a genius. Nureyev was a genius who had so much more to give beyond the limitations of his flawed physicality - his body basically disintegrated and he danced in great pain quite early on in his career because he only started his Kirov training as a teenager. Nureyev was ballet while Misha was a man who danced well. It’s almost as if Nureyev was put on earth to deliver everything he could about what dance was….he often said he was no more than a dancer…his home was wherever he was dancing and his only purpose was ballet.. The thing is ballet IS the magic between the two leads in a traditional ballet. Nureyev was great not only because of his solo capabilities but because of the generous partner he was. Since ballet is ballerina centric the greatest male dancers are those who are the greatest partners which is quite underrated (the incredibly difficult aspect of the male dancer’s job. Ballet is rarely judged, or even watched, as a solo act. It’s not a selfish art and it’s not meant to be performed alone. Perhaps on television specials or at Galas you will see a male dancer perform a variation excerpted from a PDD from a ballet. Every classically constructed ballet rarely has any male solo that isn’t connected to a PDD. The man dances his variation after the pas de deux, then the woman, and then the bravura coda. Perhaps it’s during this coda that Baryshnikov jumps higher and turns faster. A great, great male dancer always tries to put the emphasis on the ballerina (even though Nureyev beefed up and improved the male variations and even added in solos for men) Nureyev pushed himself and all those who danced with him, including Fonteyn, to go beyond their limits. If you watch Nureyev dance Giselle with Lynn Seymour in the late 1970s, for example, you see a Nureyev who creates the same magic with a completely different ballerina…even though his own technique had declined as brings out the best in Miss Seymour. That was Nureyev’s mission whereas Baryshnikov was definitely more about his solo career. I can also add that I knew both of these men as people and as dancers. Nureyev was mercurial and temperamental, filled with pathos, love, curiosity, an inner drive and almost a broken heart. Baryshnikov was, I’m sorry to say, a rather cold, unpleasant person with an enormous ego. Of course Baryshnikov was a perfectionist and he had every right to think well of himself and rightfully considered himself a great treasure. He was not a generous partner and, in fact, was infamous for the way he treated a number of his partners. Another bit about Nureyev - after he didn’t have the technical prowess of his younger years he did keep dancing to the dismay of his critics - not because Nureyev was unaware but because he felt he still had more to give. Nureyev also taught a generation of some of the greatest dancers after his career at the RB ended. He brought to life and raised the standard of most of the biggest names at the Paris Opera Ballet. He discovered Sylvie Guillaume, Karen Kain amongst quite a few other dancers.

I like Rudi in this version of Giselle. And I prefer when he does the diagonal brises three times rather than the schtick he later did, with doing all the entrechats six in place. His dancing is cleaner here than I've ever seen him... fewer tricks.

Has anyone ever watched Misty Copeland dance? She is the best in the world for me. The lines and the strength are beyond perfection. Margot is an amateur by comparison. ......Sorry guys......I believe she was deemed to be good in her day, but dancing has moved on and the dancers are stronger and so much more flexible........
@lfzmk1929
@lfzmk1929 5 жыл бұрын
Not only does Misty Copeland fall absolutely flat in comparison to Fonteyn Copeland is perhaps one of the most overrated dancers of today. Her line is not pristine nor exquisite; and her technique is fine but there are many modern ballerinas who surpass her in every way. I think if there wasn't so much hype about her color she'd be no more than a first soloist. She is a solid performer but lacking in finesse. She's like the Lang Lang of ballet. Regardless of the inevitable march to greater virtuosity and strength and flexibility one can still judge Fonteyn on her own exquisite merits and in comparison to the dancers from her time. Her line is incomparable. Her musicality and versatility regarding roles for which she was the standard by which all others were measured. Nureyev could have chosen ANYONE in the world to dance with and he stubbornly insisted on Fonteyn. She was his choice. The greatest duo ever.
@sedekiman
@sedekiman 5 жыл бұрын
You said it all thank you. I am so tired of reading about Fonteyn's lack of technique when in fact she had a great, solid, but not intrusive technique. There is far more to ballet and the creation of a character and performance than just exaggerated technique. I am so thankful for these films of Fonteyn's genius I would rather watch these and be moved than many of the so- called greats of today. Thank you again Lfzmk!!

People who criticise Fonteyn's dancing will die without legacies that changed the face of an art form. That's the truth. People can compare, debate, and ponder over shit all the time and that's fine. But as it stands, Fonteyn's fame and legacy stands true and have withstood the test of time. Everyone else can take a seat.
