The Hustle was a HUGE dance craze! People would take classes, and it brought people out into discos. Part of it's appeal was it brought back dancing with a partner, and then all kinds of different versions came out, it ignited the Disco era!! Also, in the 70's instrumentals could be Giant hits, like when you heard Chuck Mangione's "Feels So Good"!

This song was the dance groove of the summer of 1975, played on hit radio ALL the time, and went to Billboard #1. At last, the master producer and arranger Van McCoy had a hit all his own, after years working behind the production board for so many other artists. But life can be unfair -- McCoy died of a massive heart attack four years later, not even reaching age 40. RIP Van McCoy, thank you for the coolest disco groove.

My God….skating rinks were HUGE in the disco era. My sister and I went to one near our house EVERY Saturday afternoon for months in late 1977 and most of 1978. Took lessons, got brand new skates, everything. Most of the music we skated to was the disco-heavy Top 40 stuff. They were almost like discos for those of us under 18. Very clean fun.

The Hustle wasn't just a song. It was a dance - a dance craze. By the way, this song was a part of the disco medley by Selena that you reacted to previously. By the way, one big disco hit by an artist you haven't reacted to yet is "Knock On Wood" by Amii Stewart (which is, by the way, a cover of Eddie Floyd's 1966 hit).

Anyone looking for deep poetic lyrics won’t find it here, but this song was an absolute game changer in the early days of disco (1975). Frequently a song would inspire a dance, but in this case The Hustle dance was being performed in New York clubs and it inspired Van McCoy to write this song. It actually did win a Grammy for pop instrumental. Jay, if you’re gonna learn some of the moves you have to have the leisure suit and platform sole shoes lol. Please take pictures and share with us.

Yep guys this is pretty much an iconic dance instrumental. Another REALLY cool 70s instrumental is Loves Theme by Barry White and the Love Unlimited Orchestra that he conducted, but he does not sing on that one, just sounds like a magic fusion of funk and classical music played behind a 70s rhythm that you just have to hear! Highly recommend it for the react list. ❤

Hearing this song is like stepping into a time machine...instantly you're transported back to the '70s. Yes! Not forgetting The Shadows, and a progressive Dutch group called 'Focus' who had a hit with an instrumental called 'Sylvia', I think around '73...? 'Jessica' was the original theme used for the UK's 'Top Gear' programme!

I remember dancing to this at a Jr. High School dance. We didn't "know the dance" but we loved the groove, and we let it move us. The song was so emblematic of the time that "Doing the Hustle" came to mean just dancing to disco music, no matter the song.

Fantastic choice. Loved this. I had it on 8 track. This reminds me so much of the ‘Shaft’ theme song (1971) by Isaac Hayes. Shaft was an African American private detective…a real sex machine. It won the best song Academy Award in 1972. I was 8. it was very techno for its time. It was disco before there was disco. It’s friggin awesome and so damn sexy. There is a cool in studio video which totally take you back.

This was disco finesse, it was so chic and this was practically an instrumental, a song that had it's own dance. My older high school cousins taught a 5 year old me the footwork, loll. Love to see great dancers show-off at this one. ❤

This was such a beautiful song , I hate the way people trash Disco !! There was so much good music and artists who don't get enough credit for what they did. In all forms of music there's some good, some bad .✌️

Gloria Gaynor - "Never Can Say Goodbye", Donna Summer - "Love to Love You Baby", KC & the Sunshine Band - "Get Down Tonight", "That's the Way I Like It", those were some of the songs that kicked things off in 1975. Then came songs from Andrea True, Thelma Houston, Sylvester, Village People, Silver Convention and others! "Saturday Night Fever" didn't come out until 1977!

I was living in Germany at the time this song came out (my dad was in the US Army) - no internet, no cable TV, no streaming services - and even all the way overseas everyone knew this song. Teenagers would be teaching each other the proper steps in between classes, "do the hustle!" was sort of a catchphrase signifying how cool you were...this song was HUGE.

Excellent reaction. I will be honest, I appreciated neither the song nor the dance enough in the day. Nevertheless I enjoyed both. My girlfriend at the time like to go out dancing. And she taught me The Hustle. I was so grateful that she did, even though I was kind of in “anti-disco“ kind of a guy. But that was all on the surface. Because I really enjoyed so much the dance and the dancing. This song didn’t need any words, except for “do the hustle“, because the dance swept the world. And everybody was “Doing the Hustle“. While I had been into the freestyle of dancing from the late 60s through the early 70s. I really appreciated this kind of ballroom coordinated dancing coming back. While I still can appreciate free dancing, it’s so much cooler to be dancing with someone else and with other people in formations. It’s one of the reasons why although I’ve never gotten good at it, I love country dancing. Thanks for doing this reaction.

I remember when I was a child and hearing this, and watching my older sister dance to it. Trust me when I say, this was the Macarena of the mid-70s... the major difference being, "The Hustle" has held up a lot better over time. Despite this being a monster #1 hit, sadly, Van never hit the Top 40 again. The closest he cam was his follow-up song, "Change With the Times", which is also a decent tune.
