The main issue with this show was the obvious rigging done to get the final lineup. The two biggest examples of this were 1. the scoring done to get Chanelle (who was top 6 at the time) low enough to be eliminated 2. preventing international fans from voting in the finale and then making that vote worth 70% vs the week's worth of voting that included international votes being only worth 30% (THAT DOESN'T EVEN SOUND RIGHT!). I think people wouldn't have been as mad if these things weren't done. Personally, it made me not care about the group and left a bad taste in my mouth. They should have only let SK and JP vote from the beginning and just been honest about who the target audience was.

Forgot to add, regarding the judges, they honestly just seemed to be there to push the company's picks. The fact one of them said mid way through the show they didn't realize Jiwoo sung so well told me all I needed to know.

@@_aPaladin Not true, they didnt announce the finale voting until right before. Also, DA at least was honest with voters on how the lineup would be chosen and it made sense. Trying to cater to SK wasn't the issue people had, it's the shady way they went about it.

My biggest issue with the show is that I kept feeling gaslit by the judges. I would watch a performance and think, “Oof, Wonhee was really flat in this performance, she looked scared the entire time, they’re gonna rip into her,” or “Jeongeun was so captivating, I couldn’t take my eyes off of her!” and then they’d praise Wonhee and, especially in the back half of the show, avoid giving her criticism, and rarely ever air any commentary about Jeungeun, like they were trying to hide her. Those are not the only examples but just the ones I really remember clearly. It was so confusing and frustrating because what we were being shown directly conflicted with what the judges would say. It felt like they were trying to convince the viewers that specific trainees were amazing and shhh if we don’t point out these flaws they won’t notice!! and also avoid drawing attention to other trainees entirely so that they slip under the radar and receive low votes. Very manipulative and frustrating.

They shouldn’t have done the show at all in my opinion. I’m genuinely surprised the multiple acts of voting fraud wasn’t a scandal in SK. Also these types of shows have been popularized since 2015/2016 with Produce 101 S1 & onwards. At this point, international fans who’ve been around long enough should know these groups will never be catered towards us. Most times when a survival show claims to end off with an “international group”- they’re always exclusively marketed in Korea. They make those claims to bait in more viewers and boost their ratings. If y’all are tired of the rigged shows- hit them where it hurts and stop watching & supporting the show & contestants. They’re getting younger and younger with each new survival show and I want this shit to end before I see a 10 or 7 year old call themselves trainees. At this point the only reason these shows exist is because people (both those working on the shows and the audiences watching) refuse to end it.

They did do a lit of the fun activities and things about the trainees in all the behind the scenes content on KZfaq that was published around the time episodes aired. Half the time there would be no English subtitles though, which made me challenge the dialogue about it being an "international group" that was going around. Agree that they could have done so much more with the show though!

I think the group will do well in domestic market bcz of knetz fav wonhee but not in international market as other Hybe groups did. And katseye was one of the best Survival show with one of the best lineup from a Survival show the lineup was so balanced out and the fans loved it . Most of the members were talented and the lineup said it itself. fans were happy with the members and lineup . Can't denie the fact that the group consists of a great vocalist Lara, a great visual yoonchae , a great it girl factor Manon , a great dancer megan a stage presence queen Daniella and the popular memeber sophia . If you search review of katseye final u will find mostly positive review and everybody seems happy with the show and Lineup

Most people like to complain about the voting process, and make it the reason why they hate the show so much, but I feel the worst decision was, in your words, the lack of character development. I feel like people wouldn't complain so much about wonhee making it in the lineup had she had a good "character arc" in the show. Like freaking hyewon made it on produce48, just like sohye did on produce101, they are objectively not as skilled as many of the other trainees but I still feel myself rooting for them. People would have overlooked the messy voting process if the girls who made it in the lineup had a good "character arc". Like it's obvious wonhee strengths as of right now doesn't lie on live performances but rather on her singing and the fact she's eager to debut despite being just a 1 month trainee. They should have given more focus to that, even if people would have complained about manipulation who cares?? The end of making a survival show is gaining support for the debut team isn't it?
@AtypicalBookClub
@AtypicalBookClub 5 ай бұрын
YESSSSS!! I didn’t really talk about the voting process in this video because it was too ambiguous and too conspiracy theory-like. But on the marketing and operations side of R U Next, the producers had all the power to add more character development to the show, yet they didn’t. 😒 I love your idea about character arcs because it is absolutely perfect for a survival show with a very small cast of 22 people. That way, the trainees can all get relatively equal amounts of screentime and us viewers can really root for the group (just like you said), enhancing ILL-IT’s reputation and building HYBE’s brand loyalty.

@@AtypicalBookClub yes I really think they should have put more focus and idk love (? into promoting the girls. Overall I feel what runext lacked was love and appreciation to the girls :( a certain warmth. Like these are girls who have years training with hybe under various sub-labels yet it doesn't feel like it. It feels very cold and polished. For example, on iland you had bang sihyuk himself talk about each boys' strength like he knows them and even at the end he reassures the audience and the boys that they will continue to support them whatever they choose to do, and fulfilling that promise by debuting iland trainees on andteam and giving hanbin a solo stage. On Sixteen there was a definitive appreciation to the older trainees like jihyo and nayeon. But what we had on runext? nothing outside of the "she's been training for years she's desperate" what else once people started to speculate they might be saving the japanese trainees to debut under hybe Japan we got an official statement saying there was no other group planned to debut and that runext is the last chance for some of the trainees... Like what? I like the final lineup, it makes sense in my head but at the same time I wish it didn't feel like such a big loss the fact we lost amazing talented trainees like Chanelle, jiwoo, jeemin, jeongeun, funa, ruka, moa, hyewon, jihyun. I feel so bad for those trainees it hinders my enjoyment of the final group. They treated them so coldly I really doubt they have anything prepared for those girls and after reading some rumors about some of the girls leaving the company and going back to school i think they felt the same way.

I agree with this!! Like I remember watching I-Land (after Enha had already debuted) and just came to so adore Sunoo’s personality and resilience and attitude. I enjoyed his performances but I wouldn’t have necessarily called him in the top 7 in terms of live performance. But they gave Sunoo a character arc, we got to see him face setbacks and still remain upbeat, we got to see him struggle with certain physical dance moves and be criticized for it by the coaches and work harder because of that. We got to hear his thoughts when he got voted #1 in the first global vote instead of him just looking confused or bashful and that’s it. By the end of I-Land, the viewer feels like they “know” Sunoo and may root for him not because of live talent but because of _him._ R U Next failed to do that. I-Land has so many issues that I won’t get into bc it would become an essay but whoever edited it knew how to make people root for contestants. Instead of doing what they did in the end-only praising Wonhee near the back half of the show, giving her only minor criticism and avoiding the actual biggest criticism which is that her only 2 facial expressions while performing were Smile or Look Blank But Still Cute, rigging the votes to ensure that she makes it into the group by voting so it seems like all the viewers wanted her instead of just giving her the producer pick like they clearly wanted in the first place-just give her a character arc! Give her a character arc that viewers can root for! Let us see more of who she is as a person, and not just her saying she can’t sing live a bunch of times and being insecure because while that might activate a protective nature in some people, it can be really annoying to others. And then if she still doesn’t have high enough votes in the finale, save a producer pick for her if you want her so badly. I can’t imagine having a genuinely well-edited character arc for Wonhee wouldn’t have lowered her popularity, it would’ve strengthened it and made her debut less controversial. I would’ve been so much more down for Wonhee to debut had it felt like I came to know her and root for her like I did Sunoo, and like Sunoo, I don’t think I would’ve minded her being a producer pick. They could’ve even done something similar with Wonhee like they did Sunoo, where we got to know the other trainees better too and so the addition of Sunoo to Enhypen feels more balanced and needed than the addition of K, because there’s already a lot of more masculine, more “boyish,” more “stoic” types in Enhypen and Sunoo helps round the group out with a more subtle, soft, sunshiney, yet razor-sharp gaze style. Wonhee could’ve been that! Rather than disliking Wonhee herself, I dislike the shows’ producers for the rigged and gaslighting way they went about trying to make people vote for her instead of just putting in the effort to actually make people like Wonhee as a person. But they also messed up by putting so many incredibly talented trainees next to Wonhee instead of making the playing field more even and making the extreme talent sparser because then when people like Jiwoo or Chanelle don’t make it, it feels like it was rigged and we got cheated. But that’s a whole other rant for another day
@mayayoder6530
@mayayoder6530 5 ай бұрын
literally. and in the behind the scene content, wonhee has such a cute personality so I have no clue why the producers never tried to use that to her advantage but instead decided to go the "make judges over praise her" route. I feel like showcasing her personality plus the typical new trainee character developement arc (like hyewon and jake) wouldve made her more popular and her ranking woudn't have been as debated@@thylionheart

I think you hit on how the show was to be show cased in your opening, the show was to be a competition through and through, no rest... You get to see alliance being formed, people grow, and some people waver and bow out... I think it did show that.... But I do agree, it is a show at the end of the day, they really did need to show the human side of struggle more, and show more about the girls motivations and dreams etc... Most people's problem is when someone isn't treated how they like they dislike the show, Also the judges didn't seem human, and just a critical eye... They should've showed some compassion, like Chanelle not getting what she wanted but still gave it her all in the performance... There was a lot of conflicts but no resolution which is sad... I was sad when Hyewon was removed, despite her being at the top for so long, and her and Ruka were like literally helping and teaching the other contestants, none of that mattered... There was no weight to being a leader, and it was only a hinderance as you got less time to actually practice so you could standout...

I agree on a lot the factors what R U Next showed to fail during the airing They have eliminated Yuisa, a girl that had barely no screentime and her first performance wasn't even aired as one of the girls that was supposed to perform with them was sick. None of the viewers even knew much about her and they just got her off without us getting to know her even a little bit. What they failed to show us for all 22 contestants is how well they either grew or fell, or their characters, the stories were missing. This is something that for an example Produce 101 Japan The Girls showcased well, I was rooting for some of the contestants and they kept showing stories that made you attached to them. The final lineup was not maybe chosen by the international fans, but at the end people should move on from it as nothing's gonna change it. I ESPECIALLY agree on the judges part. They never had chemistry with the contestants (except Aiki), and they never bothered to guide them on HOW to improve, just if they were good or bad, if they were disappointed or not. Those girls are TRAINEES not artists they don't know what to exactly change without a guide, which led to for an example Iris, Chanelle, Jihyun, Hyewon not being able to showcase their talent well later on, and they have not been able to understand the concepts / songs. There's a lot that could of been changed about the show, but what happened happened really.

i really don't get why hybe made them a survival show. It's obvious that they had a lineup in mind alr so they could've just went with that instead of creating a whole show. I would get if the show was to promote the trainees along w the final lineup for future groups/ debuts (like iland) but the fact that they said that they have no plans for the girls and many of them leaving belift makes it seem like all they wanted was the final lineup while the other girls just wasted their time their. And another reason to create a survival show would be to get people to get attached to the trainees and what not but the show never tried to do that and they never tried to showcase the girls personality. And the fact that the show wasn't popular doesnt rlly help with promoting the grp pre debut. Most ppl prob know them as hybes new gg rather than the grp from runext. Runext jsut seems like a waste of money on hybes part.

I agree with you tbh, I don’t feel like the dynamics are super balanced. It kinda feels hodge-podged together? Like most of the girls are good individually but they feel like puzzle pieces from the wrong boxes. It’s all gonna depend on the core concept they have, honestly-HYBE groups generally have an overarching concept (youth & growing up for TXT, vampires & mortality for Enhypen, werewolves & community for &Team, I think Le Sserafim was supposed to have a model concept but they kinda feel more like fallen angels now) and maybe based off of R U Next, ILL-IT might have a sort of………sporty………concept? I can really only imagine a refreshing concept suiting all of the members, but at the same time that feels really limiting to the members who can pull off and excel at fiercer, edgier concepts.

The most disappointed thing was how the final happened. I was there since the start, voting everyday, being active on weverse just for 2 girls out of 6 being choose by the public ??? And 70% was korean votes for the 2 girls. Just tell us (international fans) that our votes worth nothing and I wouldn't lose my time to vote at all. They never NEVER told us 4 of the girls would be pick by the coaches. I'm pretty sure, it wasn't supposed to be like this but they saw international fans were much more massive that what they expected and they got scared, thinking the final lineup wouldn't please the koreans, so they secretely changed the final system, knowing Wonhee (the most loved in Korea) would be there.

We all know the main reason was the rigging. Hybe should have debuted the girls they wanted from the beginning instead of making a survival show. Let’s be honest there is no way that the most talented and popular trainees were eliminated such as chanelle, jiwoo, etc. then using ruka for clout when she was actually good but the show didn’t really show her talent because they were to focused on only bringing her up when it had something to do with le sserafim (say what you want but she wouldn’t have even been thought off as a member of le sserafim lineup if she wasn’t good). Also the show not letting international fans vote for the final line up AND THEN say that 4 out of the 6 members were chosen by the judges is ridiculous and not how survival shows work or should work. This is why you see they aren’t doing as good as they should especially being an upcoming group under hybe and enhypens juniors. This shows in the following on social media and interactions/support all together. They have around 156k instagram followers and you have groups like vcha and Katseye who aren’t necessarily kpop groups but half ran under kpop companies that have more followers and fans then they do. Also tws (pledis new boy group) who just opened their instagram account about a week ago and already is going to surpass illits social media accounts. This goes to show that rigging the most popular and talented contents out of the show only makes the groups not popular. Not hate to the girls that debut but I truly think hybe is kicking themselves for rigging this that why the next survival show was done correctly that was one of the most perfect lineups in hybe survival show history (dream academy) +they let us know how voting works from the beginning to the final episode. For the final it was 50% judges scores and 50% fan votes like it should have been for runext!

I don’t think the show is rigged, it’s just that voting is useless for this show so there’s no point asking the public to vote every week. They also give a huge advantage for Korean voters for the finale but they didn’t tell us until very late. I think people would be less angry at the show if there’s no voting for the show and we just watch

NGL. The lineup was so rigged like eliminating a all rounder like channele to not picking the best vocalist jiwoo . Tbh Chanelle was everyone top 6 along with jiwoo and jeemin atlast . It was so unfair that they let judges and knetz to pick choice and give vote which played a major role in line up . If it was global vote then there was no chances that Chanelle gonna be eliminated and jiwoo too . I was personally so scared about jiwoo bcz of her age bcz she was 23 and wouldn't be easily accepted by any company soon. Cause of knetz wonhee get to be choosed and the judges and producers seem biased towards some trainee like moka and iroha . Thankfully yunha and youngseo were picked but still it was too late to cover up the mess bcz Chanelle was eliminated way back so the group can do well in domestic Market but not in international tbh

very interesting views but i dont agree with all of them. 1st of all, i feel if this was not a show and it was done like how a normal group is formed then hybe would have definitely chosen chanelle, jeemin, jiwoo, jeongeun, minju, youngseo and yunah as their final line up. wonhee, iroha and moka need more training. those 7 girls were ready to debut. even though i had a soft spot for jihyun and hyewon...i didnt think they would make it into the final line up. the problem with a show is - the makers of the show dont just monitor ratings but also social media mentions, the engagement with fancams on hybe labels+ etc. what made me most angry was that korean audiences votes mattered more for this show. im assuming i'll-it will focus on korean, japanese and SEA markets while katseye will focus on the global market. i enjoyed the format of the show, it was an improvement from i-land but not better than &audition. im not interested in their personal lives. i dont need to know who they are, i just need to know how talented they are and how hard they work. on indian shows they show so much of contestants' lives and ppl start voting on the basis of who has a better sob story rather than talent. r u next at least maintained that distance that allowed me to judge the girls based on their talent. i dont need those distractions because those things only make the show longer. if i ever decide to stan them after they debut then i'll be interested in who they are, not when they are in their trainee phase. you wanted light hearted moments on the show. those segments were actually uploaded to the youtube channel - hybe label+ instead of showing them on the show. i think this was done for engagement. you said you didnt want to constantly watch contestants choosing song parts but i actually found that really interesting because this is something they will do after they debut as well. when they get songs, there will be parts that everyone wants but they will have to work it out as a team, the show displaying that is genius. some of the girls showed some really good leadership skills. there was a time when 2 contestants had a small conflict and it was resolved very nicely in between the 2 by talking. the show actually focused on the things that will actually happen after they debut. you dont want to see contestants always being in doubt but thats their actual situation. the training process is filled with trainees' doubts. trainees constantly question if thats the right path for them because the training process is so grueling. Hybe at least didnt make a glossy show that fit the normal survival show audience. they wanted to give a glimpse of what actually happens and thats why i feel r u next as a show is brilliant. i think the girls had a much better connection with the mentors but they didnt show it on the show. they only showed it with aiki. my guess is to keep the focus on girls rather than the mentors. my only disappointment was the final line up.

I have to disagree with you on the first part, it's not the first time hybe chooses to debut a trainee based not only on skills but other factors. Like kazuha in lesserafim or even eunchae. Like most of the time the producers have a vision of how they want the group to be and then choose the members based on that vision. Even txt, when the debut team was chosen it wasn't based on skills but how the producers envisioned the group, like hueningkai made it the debut team just 3 months in his trainee life. Another thing, I really don't think group members have the opportunity to choose who line each gets as it seems once you debut the line distribution is mostly chosen by producers, same with screentime and so on. So I don't see what the real behind the scenes situation does runext (and most survival shows) want to play out with having the trainees fight over lines. If anything the only lesson they get from it is that sometimes you don't get the lines you want and you suck it up. Imo, I think there's a reason why they decided to debut moka, wonhee and Iroha despite, like you said, their need for more training. I didn't need the show to "gloss over" or be "distracting" but rather to show me the reasons why the trainees who debuted debuted lol and I think that's where the show failed. Because most viewers can agree that based on only what we were shown, wonhee, Iroha and moka weren't as deserving to debut as the other girls :(

@@-_._-._.- in the beginning of the career, i agree that producers have more say in the line distribution and etc but as the group grows and as they start do that by themselves like bts does. They all record the parts and then they decide who gets which part and bts actively have that discussion during the making process. Especially when txt members are involved in production and writing they have more control on such aspects. In hueningkai's case, i think his talent and producing skills gave him the upper hand in getting selected. I admit 3 months is a short time but there are many factors to be looked at. The hardwork, the talent, the improvement etc. can you say that hueningkai is not a good fit for txt? He fits right in. When txt debuted no one could say that hueningkai trained only for 3 months. Same applies for kazuha as well. When lesserafim debuted she didnt look out of place. Do i think shes perfect? No but shes working on it. Considering that i'll-it will be debuting some time next year by then they would have gone through a lot more training and maybe after they debut i'll have to eat my own words😂 Knowing hybe T&D, they are not gonna debut i'll-it until they are really polished.

@@neepagummapu I agree that the members who debuted in their respective groups are the best fit I was just saying that sometimes factors outside their performing skills or training periods can affect their chances of debuting like there are reasons why heeseung didn't debut with txt, or why ruka didn't make it in lesserafim or why youngseo didn't make it on newjeans. Like maybe they didn't fit image wise to the group they envisioned, or they had too many vocalists in the group and wanted someone who is a great dancer idk. Personally I believe moka, Iroha and wonhee despite their undeveloped skills have something to bring to the table, image wise they all make sense, they are super pretty girls with similar vibes but perhaps it's their attitude, their hardwork, or some hidden talent what truly made the producers choose them over better skilled trainees. the critique on the show is that it doesn't show the girls personality and talents correctly which makes people doubt the final group. That's why the format on the show was especially bad for the lineup they ended with, it's so performance based and yet the girls who debuted are not the best performers, it's almost a set up 😭 And about the lines, I think it changes from group to group, my basic understanding is that the producers have the final say so if the members are the ones producing then they have the final say lol.

Honestly I think they should let the fans have a bit more control. Even though when the fans had control, wonhee managed to be in first place (no hate go her). The choice of judges was off, they should’ve put the universe ticket judges in this. It wouldve been so much better imo. And the choice of recording, making some girls look evil and making others look like angels, im talking about chanelle here. They made the poor girl look evil, turning people away from her so her elimination didnt have backlash but obviously that didnt work. Sadly chanelle does not want to go down the idol path anymore. This survival show was horrible. The budget was good, it was nicely made. But the choices made were just annoying. I hope that if there is another girl group survival show, its not this bad.

Thanks, I've been tuning in to the I'll It channel here and there bc I'm curious like that (like with Vcha... ffs and Katseye), not gonna stan any of them since we haven't seen a lot of character and personalities so far (some yes, but not most).

Hybe didn't know who would win. Hybe hired jtch to run the show. All you people do is complain. It was stated from the beginning how the show would work. And how judges and fans votes worked. But because your favorite didn't make it in to the group you cry fool. Their is no fool. Deal with and grow up.

its clear that hybe made many mistakes throughout the show (and jtch) because the show did not do good. And you do not know how survival shows work if you think companies dont have a lineup in mind that they push for throughout the shows.
