@@JCResDoc94 I can understand why bibleproject is soft peddling the destruction of the Canaanites in the promised land; genocide as we know it in the modern era is motivated by pride, selfishness, and racist hatred. This is in stark contrast to God's judgement of the Canaanites which was because of their wickedness; not Israel's righteousness. Whether by water, or fire and brimstone, or a foreign army, God judges the world for their transgressions and His people for their sin. This is not hyperbole! The people of Israel were warned not to lust after other gods or marry those marked for destruction; of course it was foretold they would disobey and be judged for it. The Canaanites would be a thorn in their side they could not get rid of. That's the reason the laws in Leviticus and Deuteronomy point to a remnant of Canaanites as Moses prophesied. God clearly wanted them destroyed, but Israel disobeyed. The consequences of Israel's disobedience is evident throughout the Bible. The lesson is disobeying God is the travesty; His judgement is nothing to be ashamed of.

As soon as the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people raised a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city. You said the map was boring. I thought the same about the names that were repeated in the book of Numbers and elsewhere, but being patient and reading through them all has resulted in the joy of seeing those names repeated throughout the Bible! It has helped me make connections. I truly believe every word in the Bible has special meaning. If the boundary lines of the children of Israel are drawn out for us, it is deserving of our attention, just as the names of the children of Israel are! God wanted to drive out the canaanites but in one moment of faith by Rahab God admired her faith and was extremely pleased with her that he accepted her into the Israelites and also let her marry with one of the men of the Israel and also through her lineage came Jesus! God is so good! Yesterday I was praying so hard and asking God to forgive me for failing my 13 year old cousin who's our adopted daughter. She is so disrespectful and difficult and no matter how hard I try I make mistakes and fail her. I dreamed last night about a difficult teen boy whom I couldn't get through to about his sinning. It seemed important I know his name so I asked him twice. His name "Michael Joshua." I woke up needing to know what it meant and here I am watching and now understanding that God is telling me, "God will deliver trust and wait." WOW!!

[Job] Does not the name Israel mean "wrestler with God" or "Fight with God." In the book of JOB the question He wrested with was WHY? Are we Not reading about these battles and asking "Say What?" Explain. Correct me if I'm wrong; I think you (like me) are searching for understanding and truth. Tim said the guy who stole then lied about it was punished harshly. Yup, that's right. They killed him and his entire family. That was after he confessed the truth. Yeah... I get it. He confessed because he was caught in his lie. The chapters were clear that every living thing was killed and the cities were burnt to the ground. So, yeah... I had questions! Mainly; how can a God who wipes out entire civilizations care about me the individual? This presentation by The Bible Project brought peace to my heart. I'm thrilled The Bible Project exists. 🙏 I'm still learning.

In the garden of Eden there were many trees but also unique two trees.They were both beautiful and appealing. However one led to eternal life and the other led to eternal punishment. The same can be said about the names Yahusha and Jesus. One leads to eternal blessing and the other to eternal punishment. Yahuah loves you so much that he sent his only begotten son Yahusha to die for your sins. However Yahuah is also just. So if you deny the name Yahusha then Yahuah will deny you and eternal punishment awaits you. Acts ‪4:10-12‬ 10 then know this, you and all the people of Yisrael: It is by the name of Yahusha HaMashiach of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom Yahuah raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 Yahusha is “‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’ 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Yahusha said he came in his fathers name, “literally” Yahuchanon (Jn)‪5:43‬ 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. His fathers name is Yahuah. His name is Yahusha. YAHU...ah .... The Father. YAHU...sha.... The Son. Yahusha came in his fathers name. The name Jesus is the one who came in his own name. 1 Yahuchannon (Jn)‪3:23‬ 23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Yahusha HaMashiach , and to love one another as he commanded us. Yahuchanon (Jn)‪17:11‬ B 11 ..... Qodesh Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. Yahuah did not give his son the English name Jesus. Yahuchanon (Jn)‪1:12‬ 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of Yahuah. Christian Bibles have changed Yahusha, firstly to IESOUS in 325 AD , then 400 years ago changed IESOUS to modern day Jesus. The letter J was not even invented until about 400 years ago making it impossible for the name of the Mashiach to be Jesus Christ. Keep sinning after you have been told the truth. Hebrews 10:26, 27, & 31 26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of Yahuah. 31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living Elohiym. You have been told the true names of Yahuah and Yahusha. If you continue to call a “Yahuah” “the Lord” or “God”and continue to call “Yahusha HaMashiach” “Jesus Christ” then according to the above scriptures you will be condemned. All false teachers use the false name Jesus Christ. The names in the Bible you are reading has been changed not transliterated not translated but CHANGED! Why? Because satan does not want you to be saved! Satan does not want you to know the names of Yahuah and Yahusha. That’s why Satan gave the names the Lord God and Jesus Christ. Accepting the NAME JESUS is a STRONGHOLD OVER YOUR MIND! If you can accept the above it’s because Yahuah is calling you. Only those whom Yahuah is calling will accept this message. The rest will only argue a foolish argument without any scriptural support to back up their OPINIONS.

@@praiseyahweh2332 In a similar way of argument, that is used here, it was used to take JESUS (Yahusha) to the cross. My first name is José which in English is Joseph, and they call me Pepe in Spanish which is Joe in English, which is short Joseph, and Pepe is also Jose in Spanish. And Yahweh, our FATHER in heaven knows that all of those four names were given to me And HE knows who I am. And HE also knows who I belong to when I pray in the name of JESUS. Because HE can see my heart when I am praying. Someone said ones, "The problem with society is, that society wants to make GOD to its image, instead of it being to the image of GOD". And someone else also said, "There is only two kinds of people, those who go before GOD and say 'YOUR will be done', and those to whom GOD says, 'Your will be done' ". So, in which group and society did the ones that took CHRIST to the cross fall into? Who really knows? GOD knows for sure. GOD BLESS and to not offend anyone, May YAHUAH bless everyone.

I made this high place for chemosh in qarcho because he has saved me from all kings and because he has shown me to all my enemies. omri the father of Ahab was the king of israel he oppressed moab many days for cemosh was angry with his land and his son Ahab replaced him and he said i will oppress moab but i look down on him and on his house and israel has been defeated has been defeated forever chemosh restored the land in my days and i built baal meon and i built a water reservoir in it. The men of Gad lived in the land of Atarot from ancient times and the king of israel built Atarot for himself and I faught against the city and captured it, AND I KILLED ALL THE PEOPLE OF THE CITY AS A SACRIFICE FOR CHEMOSH AND FOR MOAB. and chemosh said to me go take nebo from israel and i went in the night and fought against it from the daybreak until midday and i took it and killed all 7,000 men and women and servant girls since for Ashtar chemosh i BANNED IT. mesha put these cities under the ban. to devote or destroy is also referred to as the Ban (khY'rem) to destroy every living thing. for example God commanded the amalekites to be put under the (BAN) come of your emotion and come to the truth understanding of the scriptures.

the proponents of the hyperbole know that already. The thing is is that its not ''clearly stated'' by God, that's the whole issue. There is much to read on the topic and just saying that its that simple is to ignore the contrary evidence
@annoyingdude76

@@hezekhoshea1961 ''israel has been defeated has been defeated forever'' that is a hyperbole, it wasn't all of Israel, but some, right? Also, that doesn't get rid of the obvious contradiction in the OT account which can't be explained as being literal. Not only is the number hyperbolic (as is in all literature both from antiquity and even after) but so are the targeted groups. The Amalekites are one of the most obvious examples of a hyperbolic rhetoric.

@@annoyingdude76 There is no hyperbole the people that were ordered to be destroyed where eventually destroyed, the Canaanites where destroyed thats why they where virtually unheard of in the the times of the Kings, the Amelekites aswell eventually they ceased to exist, God gave the command to destroy the wicked Amelekites for attacking the israelites when they were leaving the land of Egypt, how do you explain this fact that these groups eventually ceased to exist? you say its a hyperbole because some groups orderd to be destroyed might have been mentioned later but God already answered this in Deuteronomy 7:22 And the LORD thy God will put out those nations before thee by little and little: thou mayest not consume them at once, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee. you stated the the command wasn't clearly stated by god, well go and read saumel 15 about the Amelekites and see if its clear or not, are you going to say the flood was a hyperbole two? because the bible says every human was killed but there was still people who survived the flood. this is not a scriptural problem but a personal problem its you people who are offended and are trying to change the Scriptures to your own liking you people do this with everything including with homosexuality which the scriptures strongly condemn old and new testament.
@annoyingdude76
@annoyingdude76 5 жыл бұрын
@@hezekhoshea1961 yes there was, they were not ''eventually destroyed'' that's down right false. They integrated into Israelite society, some still had the ''last names'' that note their origin. So you are just wrong on that. Also, to answer your question, they drove them off little by little, true, so how does that prove your point? When the attack took place it was a gradual expansion, not some quick ethnic cleansing. That's the only thing your verse shows. What about the ones that became part of Israelite society? Why weren't they killed or driven out? Because it wasn't an extermination order. Also, yes I've read 1 Sam 15, don't think I haven't seen all the relevant passages. That passage, actually the whole chapter, is filled with hyperbole. It says that they were ''totally destroyed'' apart form their king and some animals, and then completely negates it later. Not only that, you can see hyperbole both in land size and even if you look closely at the end you'll see a hint to hyperbole as well. Literal reading just doesn't work. Also, even the order wasn't directly from God, do you know what He did actually said? No, you don't. As for the flood, what the hell does that have to do with anything? I'm only here to correct you and others when you talk about something you haven't studied. If there is hyperbole, there is. If there isn't, there isn't. I can say a few words about the flood but I won't since that is not the topic. So no, it's your ignorance that is the problem. You haven't studied the topic at all, which is not a problem, but it is a problem if you haven't studied it and them talk about it.

How God in his merciful way always look for his people and indeed, with the people of Israel show us (the rest of the world), the right way to be obedient to the one and only God who creates everything and everyone. We are his creatures and must obey Him simply because he wants to be with us and show us how to be in a close relationship with Him. Honor and Glorify Him. Thanks so much for your hard work. The problem is that it's a great generalized summary, that tends to "skim" over the really questionable parts and justify it like "...the reason they were ordered to kill all men, women, and children... well you see... they prayed to false idols. And sacrificed Children! That's bad... so they had to be erased-- and the thing about killing them all, it was just a phrase of speech". So was Sodom and Gomorrah a figure of speech... was wiping out the entire earth with a flood, God responding to Elisha sending bears to go maul young kids... it can't all be hyperbolic, the fact is Yaweh apparently destroyed whole civilizations and ppl as a demonstration of power, he killed first borns and thousand of Egyptians in Exodus to "prove a point". But that isn't the big problem with these narratives, it's that they skim over the controversial shit.... okay, like Josuah for instance, after the Jewish ppl had the successful victory in Jericho, I can't remember if it was Ai, but they had a failed battle and Joshua says that god was unhappy 'cause the one soldier looted some Babylonian stuff from their last conquested, which displeased God so they collectively had him stoned to death... yep. Fucked up, right, imagine if we stoned our soldiers to death in the name of an invisible god. Also, the battle where Joshua asks God to keep the Sun in the sky for 2 days straight, which when this story was written made sense to them 'cause it was mostly around Babylonian-exile and they had no idea about Astronomy and Heliocentric theory, we know that stopping the earth's rotation would cause the entire earth to be destroyed today. But again, you don't even hear this stuff mentioned in these narratives 'cause Christian's don't want to address stuff like that, if it defies science, logic, historical accuracy, etc you will NEVER see it brought up here only the good parts.

JARY Personally I see no wrong in the creator of life taking it away, for the good. He simply doesn’t owe us anything. God gave us life, and his love freely and we spat/spit in his face when we knowingly sin against him. In addition to that let’s note that he never kills anyone without reason. I truly think the problem is some don’t understand how serious our sin is to a HOLY and PERFECT God. It’s so serious it deserves death. For the wages of sin is death... So Instead of blaming God blame the evil doers... We aren’t worthy of the breath in our lungs. Yet God shows mercy towards us and let’s us breathe/live another day. Why? Cause he loves us! God bless you brother I pray the lord softens your heart and opens your eyes! Jesus is waiting for you with open arms, I pray you receive your salvation through him! (Oh and about that Sun part... It seems you have God in this small mortal box, which is foolish. He’s God! creator of ALL THINGS! He can surely do stop the earth and everything be just fine. For HES the creator of all we see. God bless you brother, shalom!)

@@Jaryism God doesn't defy science or logic; He writes them into existence. God answered the heart of Joshua's prayer and extended daylight. I don't know HOW He did it but He's more powerful than science. It takes faith to trust in God and the Bible. You don't have to love God, but the Canaanites and all the people who were defeated because of their hatred of God probably wished they had loved Him as they were being destroyed. The Gibeonites were smart and entered into a covenant with the Israelites. They saw Israel's God as the one true God. Joshua is an awesome book!!!! I love God and I love His Word!!!! Once again, so many good things and some really interesting points brought up in these videos. Although even if we do read those Bible passages of the laws on what Israel was and was not allowed to do, doesn't necessarily give the full picture of what the Canaanites were like. Extra research is necessary to really get the full weight of how bad these people were. Even if God DID choose to commit genocide, why is that wrong? Everything God does is right, and he doesn't have to give a reason for anything. (Deut 32:4) The fact that he does is for us a kindness, not a right. The Canaanites made it their life goal to oppose God and his people, and just because a few changed, doesn't mean he didn't intend to get rid of the entire group of people (genocide) just as he did with Sodom and Gomorrah. No one has the right to question God's decisions. He is always right, and he always does what's best. Warning: The following historical facts may be extremely disturbing for some readers. But this is reality: Not only did the Canaanites do human and child sacrifice, but they also did things that defiled all nature (if you look up what Satanist's do, you'll get an idea), having sex with anything that moves. If God wanted to completely wipe them out, he wasn't the only one, because these people forced their worship on everyone and anything, collected people from all over and children from all over for their hauntingly degenerate sacrifices so that they can gain extra power, kidnapping them from their families off the street and then raping them, small children, from age of 2 and upward (even freshly aborted fetuses) to gain special creative and magic abilities. They'd keep the babies or cut up flesh in a jar, bathe in feces, urine and semen with them while cutting up animals after having sex orgies with them and then boiling them in their mother's milk (hence that seemingly out of place law in Deuteronomy: "Don't boil a kid in its mother's milk. I am Yahweh."), assuming they even had a mother left to kill. It's not just a matter of certain strange worship practices--it's a matter of bringing planet earth along with every single one of her people to complete and shocking ruin, and in a very God-defying malicious manner. These people DESERVED genocide. If you say in the Ezekiel video that God was justified in punishing Israel, and that they truly "deserved' it, Canaanites all the more so. The few that changed did not mean God did not eventually wipe these people out completely. It's easy to say "God would never do that" now since we can all say it from the comfort of our own computer, but let's be real. These people were a constant danger to society and anyone of us could have been next had we lived then. Has respect also left us because fear of imminent danger has? I can't imagine you would be able to walk up to God's throne yourself and call part of his letter to the human race "BORING!" now would you? Disrespecting the Most High is no way to curry his favor on Judgment Day. I'd tell you to watch yourself but God can speak for himself.

Hey Michaelangelo, we are all sinners saved by the grace of a loving God. I mean no ill intent, nor want you to take this in any condescending tone. We are both brothers in Christ and I say this out of love. I want to address some of the points you made. "I can't imagine you would be able to walk up to God's throne yourself and call part of his letter to the human race "BORING!" now would you? Disrespecting the Most High is no way to curry his favor on Judgment Day. I'd tell you to watch yourself but God can speak for himself." Actually I can imagine because I have in prayer told the Lord that I don't like reading Leviticus because its boring :) I have told him that some of the history in the Old Testament doesn't apply to the age we are in now. Did God smite me from the earth in wrathful anger? No, through time He showed me that without the history we wouldn't be in the age we are now. Bible Project was being honest, candid, and sincere about how we all (you included) have viewed the Bible at one time or another. Do you think God doesn't know that we find parts of His word less interesting than others? Do you think that He loves us any less? In order to find part of His Word less interesting then others it would mean that we are actually trying to engage and understand it. It shows desire Michaelangelo, which our Lord loves to see. Bible Project also expounded on the overall message of God, and did not need to go into detail about the disgusting aspect of the Canaanites. What is there to gain from knowing the graphic detail of what the Canaanites did as a culture, as opposed to just calling them morally corrupt? Nothing. If God wanted detail in His Word, He would have called and used man to place the detail there. We know the dimensions of the ark, the dimensions of the first temple, the dimensions, fabric or the tabernacle before the temple even down to the color, but God chose to not expound on what exactly moral corruption is. Why? Its not there because God didn't want it there. "These people DESERVED genocide." I dont know about you bro, but that sounds to me like self-righteous judgment. Our righteousness is but filthy rags to the Lord. Gods judgment is sufficient, and as difficult as it is for me to understand, I can understand that my way of doing things and wanting to do things is not even comparable. Just because I would have done it differently than God did, doesn't make it anymore correct How does Jesus say that the world will know that we are His disciples? Is it by the judgment we show one to another...or the love? Which is why I want to conclude on that. Its about showing Christs love, wherever, whenever you can. I know things get lost in the text, but I want to ensure that I mean no ill will in what I said and that I mean it all out of love.

Michelangelo Adamantiel I Find it unclear why you think it's ok to say that the Canaanites deserves genocide. I find that highly unfitting for two reasons: 1) God has divine knowledge which enables only Him to truly decide whether a people would ever deserve genocide 2) Canannites where also human beings. They are also people, and we who have heard the teaching of Jesus and get to see the fulfillment of the law I think should be careful with how we judge other people. In the present, past and future.

MichaelAngelo, thank you. I also commented and said similar to what you said here. I have watched several of these videos and while I enjoyed many of them, I have to say that I have noticed a similar pattern in a few. The makers of these videos seem to, in some cases, be trying to depict certain parts of scripture in a certain way that causes some facts to be downplayed, revised, or even cleverly omitted altogether in order to spare certain feelings or quite frankly appease certain viewers and their particular sensitivities. Sir, you have hit the nail on the head in your comment and your elaboration of how vile the Cananites were is a great addition to explaining why it is that they NEEDED to be destroyed ALL OF THEM even the animals. Every living defiled thing needed to go.

Aron Fra, You can't teach unconditional love without fearing the Lord first. In order for unconditional love to exist you have to have free will.The direct result of free will is both unconditional love and sin depending on which path you choose.Those that choose sin choose judgement. This also happened to the Israelites later on when they decided to engage in human sacrifice and worship Canaanite gods. They were raped and pillaged by the Assyrians and then the Babylonians as punishment.

But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” - Joshua 24:15. Joshua spoke these words shortly before his death as a farewell to the nation of Israel, before his death at the age of 110 years. He led the nation of Israel for thirty years, being given leadership at the age of 80, after serving forty years as Moses's attendant and Top Military General. Ironically, Moses and Joshua were both 80 years old when they became leader of the nation of Israel.

In Genesis 15:16 God gives Abram (Abraham) a prophecy. The second one is about coming back to the land in 400 years because, "The sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure". God, in His Devine Mercy and Providence is giving the people in the promised land 400 years to repent. Grace in Genesis. Just like today God has not sent Jesus back, because He still wants some time for our friends and strangers to Repent and believe in His Son. Josh 24:15 is beautiful. We sacrifice our life in the name of our Lord Jesus. We are protecting the name of God. It’s called faith.

I began watching these videos starting from Leviticus. When I watched this one and the assertion that the extermination of the Canaanites was hyperbole, I started to feel uncomfortable. Dt. 7:1-2, 9:4-6 and 20:16-17 talk about devoting to complete destruction and saving nothing alive that breathes. Also, the Gibeonites tricked Joshua, I see nothing that states they became believers. The Israelites never conquered all the land so they would still have a problem intermarrying with Canaanites. It was a gradual and incomplete conquest.

Kudos to you Karen, He seems to often insert his own personal bias which is not always faithful to the scriptural text.

Excellent observation. I commented that they need to pray more about this specific subsect. There are things that are not clear. Pierrebrseven thanks for catching it too

You stated what I was thinking. The Bible does utilize hyperbole occasionally, but the text is clear about the total destruction. Instead of rationalizing God’s actions to fit my flawed perspective, I will have faith that the God of the universe will do justly. Remember: without faith, it is impossible to please God.

Being named Joshua (after the one in the Bible of course) I strive to live up to my name and be more like the Biblical Joshua every day. He was a pinnacle of Godly manhood and a true warrior/conqueror. With Christ being my ultimate hero, Joshua takes a close second. There is nowhere in the Bible (at least that I can remember) where Joshua falls short, gives into sin, and faces judgment. Of course he did sin, being human, but never to the extent of it being important enough to record. Apart from Christ Jesus, I believe Joshua is the human standard that all Christian men should strive to be like. I strive every day. Thank you for the video and encouragement!
