LOL, am I the only one who thought, for about a second, "Oh no, the co-writer died?" before registering the Joseph Smith part? Hilarious! This is just such a fantastic show and I was thrilled to pieces to see the national tour last week. Not the original cast, but they're gone from Broadway now anyway and the tour is an exact replica of Broadway. So, absolutely amazing.

'The Book of Mormon' was not created with the purpose of being offensive. Rather, it is a musical that just so happens to offend some people due to its content. Have you seen it? It really is the best Broadway show in ages, and is definitely one of the best of all time. I'm not Mormon, but I saw it with my Mormon cousin and he was laughing the whole time. He even bought the CD because he liked the music so much. Besides, it isn't like the show says anything about Mormonism that isn't true!

@marioandluigi101 Nah, while they satirize the Mormon belief, the moral of the story applies to all religions; "The central theme that many religious stories are rigid, out of touch, and silly comes to the conclusion that, essentially, religion itself can do enormous good as long as it is taken metaphorically and not literally." I got that from Wikipedia.

Nah, he and Matt really did grow up middle class like the rest of us (and fortunately, they've never let their fame and wealth go to their heads!) That is his real name, but it is just a name that has been in his family. His dad goes by Randy instead of Randolph, and is the basis for Randy Marsh, Stan's dad in 'South Park.'

@ByeHawks You're not wrong, but you made it sound like they're condescending about religion and faith, when they don't appear to be at all. Matt and Trey actually have very high respect for religion, Mormonism in particular. They wouldn't spend 7 years making and perfecting this musical just to rip on Mormons 'cause they think Mormonism is stupid or "absurd"--they've said that themselves. You have to have SOME degree of respect to dedicate that much of your life to something like this.

Art can be about anything; just because it makes fun of God or religion, doesn't mean it's in any way less artistic. Also, the awards weren't "Least offensive show." or "Show that makes fun of anyone the least and has religion in it." (Sister Act would have won that). The reason Book of Mormon won had nothing to do with the fact that it has religion, but but it's because it was put together so well. If it was about anything else, and is just as good, then it would still win those awards.

I'm going to put this here many years later. Does anyone realize that Trey Parker is only an Oscar away from being EGOT. I'm still convinced to this day that if Trey and Matt hadn't worn dresses to the Oscars in 2000 they would have won for "Blame Canada," which would have made Trey EGOT.
@effurfeelings

Those votes are tabulated by an accounting firm days prior to the ceremony. Dressing up had no influence on whether they won or not. Phil's song won because it was lyrically better and best composed. These two were a VERY close second.

I am with most of you that the speech was funny, very funny.I was imaging the faces of our Utah 'brethren's' faces dropping open at the mention of their prophet Joseph Smith and how he found and translated the Golden Tablets into English and how they said that the Native Americans ARE the lost tribe of Israel. If their 'religion' was not so outrageous with their planets and baths and plural families, compounds, etc....there would be no room for humor. They set themselves up. God forgive me.
