Disagree with feast for crows being so low down, I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it was some of George’s best work, I think it gets a bad wrap because it wasn’t the sequel to storm of swords that everyone wanted
@WorldOfWesteros

I think you hit the nail on the head. I think any follow up to a storm of swords would find it hard to please everyone. But what I will say it has definitely grown on me once I read it a few more times I can definitely see its merits. Something worth doing is combining feast and dance in to one super long book, it works real well, just sometimes it can be hard to keep track of all the characters and plot

Love Brienne's chapters in AFFC, brings back memories of Arya's adventures in the Riverlands, so dirty and creepy and violent, Nimble Dick is a great character and obviously Septon Meribald, really brings home the horror and futility of war and its aftermath.

It's still pointless and leads nowhere, like, maybe it's good but doesn't really contribute anything. If martin wanted an unrelated story about a knight errand or something he should have made a separate book. Brienne should have died in that bear pit. As of right now she's just a feminist fantasy.

Cersei’s POV chapters in AFFC are my favorite out of any of the POV. We really dive into her character a lot more and seeing her being such an paranoid and incompetent and maniacal reader with all these schemes is exactly why I love the series in the first place.

A feast becomes way better when you read along side Dance. The pacing feels significantly less sluggish you’re reading all of the character’s stories at once. The Brienne chapters really killed a Feast for me but they’re way more enjoyable when they’re a bit more staggered

You mention how it feels like Feast is the start of a new series. The thing is, the books from Feast through Dream are essentially a new series. At the end of Storm, the old guard (Ned, Robert, Viserys, Jeor, Catelyn, Robb, Joffrey and Tywin) are all gone and we're seeing the rise of the new guard with things like Dany ruling in Meereen, Jon becoming Lord Commander, Tommen and Margaery rising, Sansa learning under Littlefinger, etc.

Glad I could help. My advice if you want to read in order is start with fire & blood and then move over to World Of Ice and fire and read up to the end of Roberts Rebellion. Then go back and read dunk and egg before stating the main books. If you want to add something a little different you can combine the 4th and 5th book into one. There are some great chapter orders online. It gives a different insight. With the world of ice and fire it’s a great book to read a bit and keep coming back to once you get past Roberts Rebellion. The dawn age and Essos stuff is great.

I think feast for crows and dance with dragons should exchange their places in your ranking. A feast for crows was AWESOME and is second only to storm of swords . The pacing is perfect . really enjoyed cercei's and brienne's chapters. When I saw dance with dragon's size , I thought there would be more story of every character than there actually is. particularly diasppointed with Bran's story. There are only 3 or 4 chapters of him in such a big book . George should have ended the book with The hardhome attack , The battle at winterfell , The battle of Mereen and none of this happens despite the size of the book. now , this cliffhangers will affect the size of winds of winter for sure. Danaerys and Tyrion's plot lines were so slow and lagging. their pacing really annoyed me . The book failed to reach the level of other books despite having this interesting Aegon Targaerean and Quenten Martell add ons. Dance with Dragons did not reach my expectations and is definately the least good book of the five released so far. My ranking : 1) A Storm of Swords 2) A Feast for Crows 3) A Game of Thrones 4) A Clash of Kings 5) A Dance with Dragons

Rankings below... but first, I struggled with Feast the first time as you said mainly because of the pacing, but with rereads I went for the boiled leather reading order, combining Feast and Dance into roughly chronological order and I loved both books much better that way! The slow bits of Feast were broken up so didn't feel like they dragged, which then made them feel more interesting to just be travelling around the world. Also, the more complicated and confusing bits of Dance I found the first time was also broken up so I didn't feel like my brain was working overtime. And on top of that, it's nice to not have to wait so long between returning to favourite viewpoint characters! Anyone wanting a small quality of life tip on how to do the boiled leather read without feeling like you constantly have to look the order up, I made two bookmarks, one for each book, with the set of chapters I needed to read before switching books. That way I didn't feel like it was a lot of effort to follow the order. Rankings: S: ASoS ; A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms A: ACoK ; ADwD ; Fire and Blood B: AGoT ; The World of Ice and Fire C: AFfC D: The Lands of Ice and Fire ?: The Wit and Wisdom of Tyrion Lannister

I really like your rankings, it's hard to really argue with much of it. I forgot wit and wisdom even was a thing until I did this list. Would you say boiled leather is the best reading order, I've seen a few but don't know what one to go with

@@WorldOfWesteros Thanks. Yeah that's the only one I haven't read but knowing what it is I don't have much interest in buying it really. I have only read them the whole way through twice, once normal and once boiled leather but I definitely enjoyed the boiled leather more. How much that is due to the reading order and how much is due to me just being more familiar with the books on a second reading it's hard to say, but I feel like the reading order did make it more enjoyable for me. I used this reading order I think: i.imgur.com/CfGzYMx.png but I also saw this one a lot. Haven't actually checked if they're exactly the same or not! i.imgur.com/Lc79w1H.jpg Having only tried one I can't say how good it is in comparison but I think it was fun. One stand out moment is when we have Sam POV in Feast and Jon POV in Dance but it's the same conversation from both POVs, that was interesting.

1. DANCE OF DRAGONS,all of the threads of every book coming together left me more anticipated for anything in my life since Black Panther. REEK and Stannis,Victarion and Barristan Selmy, the wedding of frey and Lanniser at Riverrun. Euron Greyjoy and the Iron Fleet. AEGON's return to Westeros. What is Varys Plan? The blackfyres return ? All of these have me salivating with anticipation. This book really made me go back and reread every single book over and over and I always found a connection to something else that was set up before, changed the story entirely, and then sets up something else. 2.The world of Ice and Fire. I love history, greek Mythology and relatable fantasy that I can take seriously. The histories behind every culture are so vast and worth exploring it shows you the lack of imagination behind the studios at HBO. The biggest takeaway I enjoyed learning about was the trade relationship between the Early Varliyan Empire and The Summer Isles. I just keep imagining a tiny Valryian Girl begging her father for a panther Cub from the summer Isles. 3. Storm of Swords is an all time classic ,the only drawback is that I ruined the red wedding twist for myself already. Not one of most rereadable for me personally but a great book nonetheless and I enjoy what they set up. 4. Feast for crows gets a alot of flack, but hands down the best storyline for me personally was the introduction of the ironborn and Dorne. The scope of the war expanding. The histories of the lands, fighters, cultures, grudges, betrayals, and house hierarchies are great. VICTARION AND EURON GREYJOY deserved to be introduced to the story properly. the Kingsmoot is one of my favorite scenes. Meanwhile in Dorne you learn things are not as United or as powerful as they claim to be. Prince Doran got killed-wasted on the show due to being a man. He deserved better. 5. Clash of Kings is the tyrion show and he deserves it,not one other character shares the same amount of depth,Personality, likeability, and political power as Tyrion, and he still gets manipulated by Varys. 6. A Game of thrones is great, and the show copied it to its success despite leaving out alot, but also improving some things. 7. Game of thrones the tv show by d&d ruined the tv show for me personally. It's one thing to have a bad ending. But the problems were there since season 5 with no dorne or Iron Islands,no prominent POC characters who aren't white, female,or emasculated. And shoddy character development for every except maybe Theon.

I have the books where Storm and Dance are split into two separate books, so the ranking will be different. 1. A Storm Of Swords 1:Steel and Snow 2. A Game Of Thrones 3. A Storm of Swords 2: Blood and Gold 4: A Dance With Dragons 1: Dreams And Dust 5: A Clash Of Kings 6: A Dance With Dragons 2: After The Feast 7: A Feast For Crows The last three can be changed around. I liked some aspects of Feast such as Cersei as a new POV and returning characters in Jaime and Arya. (Personally i think that Feast is the weakest of the main story line).

S: A Storm of Swords A: A Game of Thrones, A Feast for Crows (Cersei made this book for me, and I loved Sansa, Jaime and Arya and Arianne's POVs too, if not for those Greyjoys it would've been S) B: A Clash of Kings, A Dance with Dragons (So the main problem I have with Dance is that besides Tyrion's POVs, I didn't really enjoy it alot. Despite having characters like Melisandre, who I was very curious about and Jon, whom I'm not the biggest fan of but his POVs I enjoyed after the second book, I couldn't fully enjoy it. It might have something to do with how heavy it was on Davos and Bran whom I don't necessarily dislike, but their POVs don't really get my interest. And Dany not reaching Westeros is getting really frustrating now, though her struggle with power does make it a little interesting.)

In my opinion A Feast for Crows is very underrated. The main issue people have, is that the book is much slower than ASoS, which is absolutely true. But why is that so? After ASoS, things changed, major characters like Robb and Catelyn, Joffrey and Tywin died, and the war between the south and the north ended. Thats the reason why it couldn't be a ASoS sequel. The reason why the book is that slow, is, because merely every major character slowed down themselves: Daenery's chose to stop heading for westeros and stayed in meereen, Stannis stopped focusing on Kings Landing and sealed to the wall and is now restoring a few castles, Sansa is 'safe' at the vale and Sam is heading for oldtown to become a maester, which is basically the definition of slow and boring. I still think it is a great book, because all the new plotlines are interesting and really felt like AGoT. The Dorne and Ironborn plotlines expand the lore immensly, which had to be done, because these two kingdoms and families didn't have much screentime in the previous books. The more character and drama focused approach were refreshing aswell and the new point of views were logically chosen, and mostly very good (Victarion, Cercei, Arya, etc.). AFFC isn't my favorite book, a few Brienne chapters for example were unnecessary and boring, but it doesn't deserve that much hate.

Honestly after George finished winds ( hopefully he does) I hope he knocks out like 4 more dunk and egg stories instead of writing the final book and leaving dunk and egg standing

1.ASOS(The only flaw in this book is Bran) 2.ACOK(This one has some extremely boring storyline(Bran, Jon, the begining of Arya), but it also has some of my favorite plotlines of the entire serie(King's landing with Tyrion&Sansa, the war with Catelyn, Theon is good too) 3.ADWD(Also a book where I really dislike some parts but love others. The lows are lower than for clash of king) 4.AGOT(The most consistent book, but it has few "wow" moments. 5.AFFC(It really sucks. Character arcs that go nowhere, horrible pacing, just meh).

ACOK is really interesting because it really is a mixed bag of some of the best and worst. I don’t mind Arya’s early chapters but they get boring quick. And bran is just well bran. I don’t mind bins chapters. But Arya and Bran really slow the book down. I think theon is clash is very undreamed as a character. It’s important to understand where he is coming from before he is turned into reek. There great chapters to re read. I think Cat got screw in the show. The book version was much better. I think a lot of people rank AGOT so high due to nostalgia, it does have the issue of not a lot happening due to it mostly setting stuff up.

Affc is so underrated, it doesn't go nowhere at all we have a huge set up for everything and character development at its finest. It is more philosophical and touches more magic elements and makes connections between pretty much everything. I recommend to read/watch some essays about AFFC in my opinions Affc and Adwd are on a higher level than the other 3 books because they go deeper into the characters, philosophy, magic and worldbuilding and are just much more than they seem on the surface. For you it maybe sucks, but that is I think just because it is not quite your taste, because it is very character driven. The further ones are more plot driven. And the Bran chapters... They are better on a re-read... believe me. You will see the heavy foreshadowing and very well hidden hints...

@@justarandomgirlvx3578 AFFC is character driven?!! Ah yes, we sure learned a lot about Brienne as she was walking in the middle of nowhere. Or cared about a boring bloodthirsty idiot-Victarion in his exacly two chapters.

Been reading it again recently, and i defiantly underrated it in a lot of way. For me it still has it's issues, but looking back Dance has a lot of those same issues.
