That is my favourite adaptation as well. I love the family dynamic and how the mini series improves the romantic relationships. I love Elinor and Marianne especially in that version. One of my problems with the 1995 movie is that the whole cast is aged up except for Marianne so there is a massive age gap between sisters and Marianne and Brandon.

It's so brilliant, isn't it! Age is important in Austen, and it's especially important I think that Elinor is so wise and sensible though so young, so that annoys me too in that adaptation.

I agree that is a flaw in the 1995 adaptation. But at least they had someone handsome play Willoughby--when I tried to watch the 2008 adaptation, I was so shocked by the ugly Willoughby that I couldn't go on with it! I hate when film/TV adaptations don't give the audience enough credit to make an unsympathetic character physically attractive. Willoughby is so attractive and sexy in the novel that even Elinor feels the power of it in the final scene.
@hcu4359
@hcu4359 Жыл бұрын
@@lizzy-wx4rx Dominic Cooper is not remotely ugly. He appeared as womanizer Howard Stark in the first Captain America movie and no one questioned the idea of him as a chick magnet there. I think he possibly plays Willoughby as overly cagey and sinister, but it's really your only alternative to playing the character as the selfish, almost ditzy himbo of 1995.
@lizzy-wx4rx
@lizzy-wx4rx Жыл бұрын
I'm surprised to read this old comment, calling anyone "ugly" is mean, and I agree, he's not "ugly," just not at all my idea of Willoughby, even though I have since seen him in roles where he seemed much more attractive than here (his face is especially improved with some facial hair for some reason). But (without getting into mean specifics), I still don't think he embodies the impressive"manly beauty" described in the novel--that's more like the actor playing Edward, who is decidedly NOT handsome in the novel. But I guess it's all pretty subjective, in any case!@@hcu4359

You gotta be kidding me, how am I 36 n I've never watched this? I haven't even finished episode 1 and absolutely in love!! I Love the movie and book so I was very hesitant to watch it when I saw it on Hulu, but I saw that the girl who plays Marianne is the girl in The Great, and I Love that show and dig her in it. I am SO thrilled I gave this a chance!! Feel as if I will have to buy the series bc everything about it is perfection. The actors, music, the fact that we get flushed out characters and scenes since it's a series. The story def deserves it. I recommend it to anyone who loves the novel and to anyone who loves the movie and might be worried about giving it a chance. Update: finished it. I am definitely buying it and I am going to now listen to it while I go to sleep. It blew me away, all the actors were Superb, however Elinor absolutely stole the show for me. 💜💜💜💜

SPOILERS: I remember when I was a kid and watched the 1995 S&S, I was like, "the only thing that would make this story better is if Willoughby came back at then end and admitted how wrong he was and explained himself." Then I read the book and was like, "Oh my goodness! He does! Why did they cut that?!" I know they tried to do something similar with shots of Willoughby on horseback looking regretful down on the village where Marianne is getting married, but it's not the same. So I love it that the 2008 version does keep that scene. I love the 2008 adaptation with all my heart so it was wonderful to hear you articulate all the reasons why it is amazing.

Sense and Sensibility is my favorite Austen (maybe now tied with Persuasion as I get older), but I think you make some fair points about the pacing and lack of development of some of the characters. Edward is definitely a pretty uninteresting love object, but I agree with you that the story is actually more about the sisters than their romances (why I think people may be disappointed if they are comparing it to P&P and expecting a similarly romantic story). Perhaps that is why it is my favorite--I am quite close to my older sister, and always really identified with that as the emotional center of the novel. I love your insight about the other "sibling-like" relationships as well--I had never thought of that, although I always enjoyed those dynamics. (The scene in London when Edward calls is so brilliant on so many levels.) Although people don't like Marianne, I love her character development and the themes about how we (mis)judge others in relation to our own emotions and standards. The older I get, the more I appreciate that aspect of the novel, and am often struck by the subtlety and wisdom Austen shows in exploring it (a theme also in P&P of course).

I do agree that the story is more about the sisters - which is why I think I've come to love it more on rereads than I did on my first reading. I like Marianne's character development too, and always find it really interesting.

Wow, this really surprises me! I think the 1995 adaptation is actually the most faithful in terms of capturing the spirit of an Austen novel. And even though a lot was cut out, the film captures so many important moments for the characters just brilliantly (like when Mr. Palmer offers to stay with the sisters towards the end, revealing that he does have a warm nature beneath his sardonic manner.)

I actually love Sense and Sensibility, both the book and the 2008 version. I think it feels more realistic as compared to Pride and Prejudice. The pacing is slow for sure, but it grows on you. 1995 version is also perfect except Emma Thompson's age doesn't match that of Elinor Dashwood. And for once, I liked that the focus in Sense and Sensibility is not the love story, but the relationship dyanamics between the sisters and their mother. They face poverty, heartbreaks but are still resilient. Elinor Dashwood's character is a lesson in resilience and how to keep your emotions in control when required.

@@katiejlumsden Same here. Recently I have been watching and reading about Jane Austen's personal life and it becomes more relatable on why she wrote Sense and Sensibility. She underwent financial hardships and changed homes several times, and in a way, she gave her heroines the happy endings which she never got (in terms of wealth and romance).

Well you already know how disappointed I am that Northanger is your least favorite now. I think Emma might be my second favorite at the moment. Can we read Emma and Persuasion next year? It's a brilliant insight that true characters love adamantly and inconveniently. I love thinking about Colonel Brandon and Elinor platonically, but there is a point in the book where I always feel that they should just get married. Great video ! I also love this adaptation. I watched it again this month after rereading S&S and it is perfect. Hattie Morahan is my favorite Elinor, she is fantastic and closer in age to the character than in the 1995 film. But I prefer Kate Winslet's Marianne, and Alan Rickman's Brandon. I can't think of this character without thinking of him. I agree, the scene in which Willoughby explains himself is one of the best. I also like Mrs Jennings a lot in this TV adaptation, despite being exasperating at time she's kindhearted.

The 1970s bbc versiin with Joanna David is an absolute FEAST for the eyes, however its a bit confusing. 2008 version is much better. I suspect I find Sense and Sensibility a bit hard going due to the 'hysterics' Marianne seems prone to. Elinor is Ace.

Just finished watching this adaptation and I kind of found it a little choppy--almost like here's the highlights of the story. However, I did like its treatment of the love story between Colonel Brandon and Marianne (the book version is a little bit of an afterthought). I liked the part in the carriage on the way back to Barton where Marianne is watching Colonel Brandon on his horse. That came across as a believable pivot point in her feelings towards him. I also agree that the Willoughby part at the end was good and important and the fact that, in the adaptation, Marianne overhears. I thought that was a nice touch. The actors are all good, though. I did like Emma Thompson's S&S, but I think the BBC versions of Austen are almost always better. The thing about this story that I just don't get is why was it okay for Robert Ferrars to marry Lucy Steele and not Edward? Is it just that Robert is Mrs. Ferrars's favorite?
@katiejlumsden
@katiejlumsden 5 жыл бұрын
The BBC adaptations of Austen are in general strong. So, it's not more okay for Robert to marry Lucy in his family's eyes - but basically, Edward was due to inherit but didn't have any money actually settled to him; then, when Mrs Ferras is angry with him, she settles all the money on Robert/gives it to him. So he now has all the money that Edward was due to have but didn't actually have - so Lucy marries him instead. Does that make sense? It's a bit fiddly!
@tommykayreads6436
@tommykayreads6436 5 жыл бұрын
@@katiejlumsden I understand the situation from Lucy's perspective. Although having been thrown out viciously by Fanny, I am surprised that Lucy was willing to be connected to the family (money, I know). What I don't get is why was Edward disinherited, but Robert was not, for the same offense. The only sense I can make of it is that Robert is really Mrs. Ferrars's favorite, so she might have been initially mad at him, but ultimately forgave him. Not really fair. The other thing I am unclear on is Lucy's motives toward Elinor. Did she know that Elinor had an attachment to Edward and was singling her out for that reason?
@imasinnerimasaint
@imasinnerimasaint 2 жыл бұрын
@@tommykayreads6436 Mrs Ferrars settled all the money on Robert. She gave it to him when she was angry with Edward. Edward was due to inherit the money, but didn't actually have it, so she could change who received the money. But she didn't just change her will, she GAVE the money to Robert. It became his. She no longer had the power to take the money back afterwards, so he could marry with impunity regardless of what his mother thought, because the money was in his bank, not hers. She removed her ability to punish Robert financially the same way she punished Edward financially by actually giving Robert the money in a fit of pique rather than merely changing her will. But yes, she did like Robert better, and Lucy was good at kissing arse, so she ended up liking Lucy better than Elinor because Lucy was better at brown-nosing after she married Robert.

I also love this adaptation, for all the reasons you give. I like the Ang Lee version although Emma Thompson is too old and the older age is incorporated into the script. What I like best is the beginning of Edward and Elinor's relationship growing out of helping Margaret grieve. I found that Thompson's added scenes actually added to the story and made things more understandable. The whole movie is worth it just for Emma Thompson's Golden Globe acceptance speech. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/araloZabxrO6ep8.html But I agree, this adaptation is better in many ways. Someone pointed out that Dan Stevens also appears in a wet shirt in this adaptation; it seems Andrew Davies doesn't mind repeating himself when he hits upon a good thing.

I totally agree on Edward. I find him the least well-developed Austen hero - we just don't see enough of him to get much of a sense of him and his personality, which makes him hard to care about (except for Elinor's sake). Even Colonel Brandon - who I am quite fond of, even if I do worry whether Marianne will truly be happy with him - is more well-defined.
