(Actual paper folding starts at the 7.15 mark.)
Momigami is a traditional Japanese paper technique that turns paper into a gorgeous soft paper. Today we look at a way to turn ordinary magazine pages and glossy images from coffee table books into momigami papers that you can use in art journals and other mixed media techniques.
PLEASE NOTE: IT IS IMPORTANT TO COAT YOUR PAGES IF THEY ARE GOING IN A JOURNAL, OTHERWISE THE OIL MAY LEAK ONTO OTHER PAGES. Try acrylic gel medium, a coat or two of PVA/craft glue/Mod Podge, etc., and be sure and test before gluing into a new book. WHEW!
If you have any questions or feedback, or even ideas of ways to use momigami magazine pages in our work, please get in touch in the comments below.

oh my goodness. I've been doing this since I was a kid and had NO idea there was an official name for it. "Momigami" started for me after noticing that the more you crumpled the note paper, the cooler it felt. Like fabric. 😊And you could run it through mom's machine, or watercolor, colored pencils were fun and who wasn't making broaches out of crumpled paper and nail polish?😜 Thanks for sharing this. Will inside my Vaseline with a drop of essential oil for fragrance next time and use that. yOU have encouraged me to get up and try new ways to make pages and papers for my journal. I am in the middle of a journal for a beach trip and I think this is going to be a great background for some of my drawings as a framework. it will give my drawings the feeling of being found in say a message in a bottle since my page looks like or is cut to be a bottle that will open to find hidden happenings on our adventures and to write little notes to our children about what my husband I did and how those things reminded us of the time we spent with them at the beach and I will be adding some of the pictures of them as children on the beach. I am going to print the pictures on paper and laminate them so the kids will have pictures of all of us and the joy they bring to us. That is how I want their childhood and our family and the time we had in the past. not that we are expecting anything or that our health is in question but I know I wont be here forever. Thank the universe I cant take anymore of these 12 yr election cycles and all the division and depression of this time in my life I dont want them to even think about the now when they get these books.

Amen to that. Here in the UK we have an election in ten days and while it is bonkers we do not have the hate and division as in the states. (But it is bonkers, all the same.) Your journals sound a delight and I often encourage people to see them through the eyes of grandchildren or other young people who will find them Someday. It would be a good idea to add a coat of something, pva or gel medium, to make sure the oil doesn't stain pages near it. Test it out first. (I am only finding out about this the hard way. 🙄) All the best! Kelly

I now have a small stash of papers! Yay! I tried it before with hand cream and other lotions and had no luck. I used avocado, olive and grape seed oils. I used a seed catalog, and an art magazine on good paper. The colors brightened a little overnight after the papers dried. Next step collage them together in layers to make something less fragile. This was my first time to see you. I've subscribed and can't wait to see more! Jan in Oklahoma

@@BookandPaperArts Wales. I wondered where you were. I'd love to go there some day. I did let everything dry several days. The totally dry pages were brighter. I liked the idea of the cover of a journal with the extra layers so that's where I started. I put glue on the images that seemed muddled and tore and layered the brighter images on top. Then I took a boring full size page and glued larger pieces down starting around the edges. Then I put my original piece down in the middle. I left the edges lose so I can fill in the blanks under or over the edges. I may collage the name of the book with letters from magazines. After I create a title. I think I'll water color a piece of parchment paper first and then create the fabric for the inside of the cover. I have a couple of small boxes, about 3x4 inches I plan to to use to make a small book. I think the folding in advance helps. The creases seem to give the oil a place to get into the ink. Thanks for your encouragement. Jan in Oklahoma. ❤️

With glossy paper, the ink is sitting on top of a coating meant to grab ink during printing so the ink is going to smear a bit and come off as you go along. With matte (uncoated) paper, some of the ink sinks into the paper and combined with it being a non-slick surface the ink is pretty much going to stay put. Since the matte paper lacks a coating, the paper won't be as durable either.
