I get a lot of questions about how to make beautiful work on text, handwritten, and print papers as well as maps and eco prints: how to use them as a “blank” page in your journal and mixed media work. Well, here are five ideas using soft pastels, collage, acrylic paint, stencils, pencil, and watercolour.
To see boiled blank books in my online shop, go here:

This is a full-length video showing a ton of fun ways to use stencils in your pages:

Absolutely love this video. I find creating relaxing and helps with my mental health, but I’m not an artist. Here you’ve made it doable, thank you! Also love the antique and vintage papers you use. I love to watch your “what’s new in the studio” videos. You find some lovely things that I just drool over, lol.

Hi Pauline, I put all the pages together, added onion skins throughout and some rusty things, then tie them all together into a bundle. Then immerse in a rusty cast iron stock pot full of black tea. Simmer for a few hours. Then dry, but only after having dripped wet, rusty tea everywhere in your small flat. Hey presto, boiled book! (Thank you for the suggestion. I really, really want feedback and to know what people are curious about seeing. And hey, I am going to France in two weeks, so yippee!)

@BookandPaperArts

It is by Rumi: "My soul is from elsewhere, I’m sure of that. And I intend to end up there." Something that has been much on my mind as late. Reading about the mystics. Questioning reality. Ha. I sound like a kid at college. Just turned 60, and believe me, I am questioning reality and what we understand - or think we do - more than ever. And you?

@@BookandPaperArts Hello Again! I had great success with the 3 pieces I worked on. I used oil pastels and a book page to make the pretty yellow flowers, and they look great. Then in 2 phases, I did the acrylic flowers and the water colored flowers. They both came out beautifully. I stayed pretty true to your instruction and I plan to do more, and perhaps do some from my own imagination based on your techniques. Thank you so much! I rewatched the videos you posted the links to, and loved them, and have watched a lot of your older ones, so lots more experimentation to come. I appreciate the encouragement!

@@annwaddell7321 Hi Ann. This is so exciting. Your flowers sound very cool and yes, you are quite right the next step is you make the style your own. This is what I do: learn a technique by copying the original artist, then start looking at flowers in books and real ones in the garden (and yeah, on Pinterest, too 😁) then try my version of them on cheapo paper until I get something that really pops. So, go get 'em!

@@BookandPaperArts More news! I am working on a project for family members which is sort of a journal focused on their life. There is a section about their house, and one about their garden. Last night I made a flip out of the water color that I did, with a collage of gardens on the back, and under it will be some photos of their own garden. It's very exciting. Thanks for the technique and the inspiration!

Hi Sue. It is a book that where the pages were put together then tied into a bundle then boiled (steamed, really) in a tea and rust bath. The pages look something like this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hdRnjM55uNzVe4k.html They are quite easy to make once you get the knack and are very dramatic.
