Mary Whitmer. You didn't show how she was upset that the men we not working while she felt like she bore the brunt of the manual labor on the farm. Then, one can only speculate that it was either Moroni or one of the Three Nephites showed it to her. I like how he said that she had been toiling and understood what she was doing and how she felt. Sometimes all we need is empathy

How did the 3 witnesses (the scribes) 'witness the plates? Why did the 8 witnesses (Joseph and Davids families) get to see the plates physically, but the 3 scribes werent allowed?
@CrackedCandy
@CrackedCandy Ай бұрын
@mikkifrompreston4396 the 3 saw the plates and the angel, the 8 saw just the plates, no angel. You can read their statements for the full story. But basically that. The Testimony of Three Witnesses Be it known unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, unto whom this work shall come: That we, through the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, have seen the plates which contain this record, which is a record of the people of Nephi, and also of the Lamanites, their brethren, and also of the people of Jared, who came from the tower of which hath been spoken. And we also know that they have been translated by the gift and power of God, for his voice hath declared it unto us; wherefore we know of a surety that the work is true. And we also testify that we have seen the engravings which are upon the plates; and they have been shown unto us by the power of God, and not of man. And we declare with words of soberness, that an angel of God came down from heaven, and he brought and laid before our eyes, that we beheld and saw the plates, and the engravings thereon; and we know that it is by the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, that we beheld and bear record that these things are true. And it is marvelous in our eyes. Nevertheless, the voice of the Lord commanded us that we should bear record of it; wherefore, to be obedient unto the commandments of God, we bear testimony of these things. And we know that if we are faithful in Christ, we shall rid our garments of the blood of all men, and be found spotless before the judgment-seat of Christ, and shall dwell with him eternally in the heavens. And the honor be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, which is one God. Amen. Oliver Cowdery David Whitmer Martin Harris The Testimony of Eight Witnesses Be it known unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, unto whom this work shall come: That Joseph Smith, Jun., the translator of this work, has shown unto us the plates of which hath been spoken, which have the appearance of gold; and as many of the leaves as the said Smith has translated we did handle with our hands; and we also saw the engravings thereon, all of which has the appearance of ancient work, and of curious workmanship. And this we bear record with words of soberness, that the said Smith has shown unto us, for we have seen and hefted, and know of a surety that the said Smith has got the plates of which we have spoken. And we give our names unto the world, to witness unto the world that which we have seen. And we lie not, God bearing witness of it. Christian Whitmer Jacob Whitmer Peter Whitmer, Jun. WHY DO LDS REJECT ETERNAL GOD OF BIBLE & BELIEVE IN FALSE EVOLVING GODS OF Joseph Smith? ISN'T YOUR ETERNITY WORTH EXAMINING THE TRUTH? "Before me NO god was formed, nor shall there be ANY after me.” (Isaiah 43:10) If Mormonism is true, then God could not make this claim, for he was just a man at one point; nor could he claim that no gods would come after him, for that is the goal of LDS members. Isaiah 44:6 says, "I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God." and it goes on "Is there any God besides me?... I know not one" So obviously God is saying there is NOT any infinite amount of Gods, and there is none other like Him. Mormonism teaches that there is. LDS paid scholar Dan McClellan: " The data pretty firmly points in the OPPOSITE direction of a historical BOM" youtube short video "Is the BOM historical?" There is NO archaeological, anthropological, topological, linguistic, botanical or dna evidence to support the Book of Mormon. LDS anthropologist Dee Green: “The first myth we need to eliminate is that BOM archaeology exists” conceding 20 years of research “left us empty-handed” (Green 1969 p. 77) NO trace of Jewish DNA found in any Indian burial ground anywhere in the Americas from time period of BOM. Thomas W. Murphy, (Mormon scholar, DNA researcher): “the genetic evidence shows that American Indians are not Hebrews, they are not Israelites. The Book of Mormon is not true.” John Whitmer Historical Association Journal 2005 NO truth: Book of Abraham published with 3 drawings taken from an ancient Egyptian papyrus. The book is a funerary papyrus showing scenes from the Egyptian Book of the Dead. In drawings Nos. 1 & 3, Smith misidentifies everything depicted. "LDS and non-LDS Egyptologists agree that the characters on the fragments do not match the translation given in the book of Abraham" Quote from LDS OFFICIAL WEB PAGE NO trace of “2 million Jaredites slain” (Ether 15:2), with iron, brass, breast-plates, shields, and armor. It is impossible for these millions of dead warriors in metal armor to leave no trace. NO trace of the "great" city Zarahemla- it is impossible for a city the size of Zarahemla described in BOM (Alma 5:2; D&C 125:3) to leave no trace. NO temple like Solomon's described in 2 Nephi 5:16 has ever been found yet biblical temple is easily seen in Jerusalem. This "temple" could not just disappear. NO Nephite "reformed Egyptian" writings described by J.S. ever found anywhere as it is not a real language anywhere in the world. NO cities mentioned in the BOM have ever been located (none of 38) ANYWHERE. It would be impossible for them to disappear unless they never existed. NO evidence: "The whole land was covered with buildings, and the people were as numerous, as it were the sand of the sea." Yet NOT ONE ever located. (Mormon 1:7) IMPOSSIBLE for highly advanced civilizations (Jaredites, Nephites) & MILLIONS of people to have vanished. The BOM speaks of sheep, swine, silk, wool clothing & elephants existing in the Americas when they did not. 1 Ne.13:7; Alma 4:6; Ether 9:17 and 10:24 These were brought to America centuries later by Europeans. NO wheat, no goats, no metal smelting furnaces, no metal armor, no steel swords, no cattle, no chariot parts, no brass (Mosiah 8:10) no evidence of the listed Kings in BOM, no Jewish relics or Jewish Temples from supposed Jews, no metal plates like Nephites supposedly used, no middle eastern seeds growing, "which were brought from the land of Jerusalem ... and grew exceedingly" 1 Nephi 18:24 CAN WE IGNORE THE LACK OF EVIDENCE FOR THE THE BOOK OF MORMON AND JUST TRUST OUR FEELINGS AS TO THE TRUTH OF IT EVEN THOUGH IT CONFLICTS WITH THE BIBLE? NO! D&C Section 9:8-9 - tell us that if something is true it will make our "bosom burn" and we will FEEL that it is right. Maroni 10:4 says: "he will manifest the truth of it unto you" The Bible warns us against this subjective type of truth test. Why? Because we have a sinful nature that can be deceived. Proverbs 28:26 "He that trusts in his own (bosom) heart is a FOOL." The Scriptures, however, are infallible and can never be wrong (John 17:17; Psalm 119:128; 33:4; 19:8; Romans 3:4). This is why the Bible frequently urges us to study and meditate on God's word. 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV "STUDY ... rightly dividing the word of TRUTH." Acts 17:11 "EXAMINE THE SCRIPTURES to see if what said is TRUE". 1John 4:1 says: "BELIEVE NOT EVERY SPIRIT, ... because MANY FALSE PROPHETS (J.S.) have gone out into the world." Mormonism CLAIMS the bible was corrupted to justify Joseph Smith's changing of the biblical, eternal God into an evolving, created god, who is not all powerful and is one of an endless number of gods . However, this is a PROVABLY FALSE claim. The Claim: In the BOM, the prophet Nephi has a vision the Bible was CORRUPTED and "plain and precious parts" were removed after the 12 apostles and after the formation of the “great and ABOMINABLE church” (1 Nephi 13:26-29). Most Mormons believe this is the Catholic Church formed in the 4th century. Nephi claims this church was founded by the DEVIL (1 Nephi 14:3). So let’s objectively examine the Bible & BOM. BIBLE: The Dead Sea Scrolls have been dated to as early as 350 BC. One is the Great Isaiah Scroll, which is the oldest known copy of the Book of Isaiah dated to 180 BC. Do ANY ancient scrolls show Smith's "uncorrupted" version of scripture? NO! Yet they would if the scripture was later corrupted after the 12 apostles died as Smith and Nephi said. Also, if they had been corrupted, Jesus would have corrected scripture instead of affirming it! Jesus sd:“ I told you EVERYTHING written about me in the Law of Moses, the Books of the Prophets, and in the Psalms had to happen.” (Luke 24:44-46) Scripture is the same today as it was 2,100+ years ago with only minor spelling and punctuation differences. Joseph Smith was wrong. These scrolls pre-dated Catholics, and are Jewish scrolls and the BOM says the Jews had the Scriptures in their "purity". 1Nephi 13:25 LDS Apologist Wayne Ham admitted the Isaiah scroll does not support the the BOM. Apologist Dr. Sidney B. Sperry, of BYU, said the Dead Sea Scrolls do not help the case for the BOM. BYU Professor Joseph F. McConkie: "Rather than Joseph Smith as Found in Ancient Manuscripts, it ought be Joseph Smith as Lost in Ancient Manuscripts.” (Religious Studies Center, 1984) IS THE GOD OF THE BOOK OF MORMON THE SAME ONE AS IN THE BIBLE? NO! In the LDS Church’s 147th Conf., Gen Authority Bernard P. Brockbank said: the Christ followed by Mormons is NOT THE CHRIST followed by traditional Christianity. (Ensign, May 1977 p. 26) Like Joseph Smith, the goal of Satan was to be like God and have worshipers. "I will exalt my throne above the stars of God ... I will be like the Most High”’ (Isaiah 14:12-14) The new testament has not been corrupted either. See the book of John. Smith changed it to make Jesus a created being. Research a 1900 year old papyri known as the Bodmer Papyri of the book of John. (written 150 AD, around the Apostle John's time) John 1:1 "In the BEGINNING was the WORD and the WORD was WITH God and the WORD WAS God." ΕΝ ΑΡΧΗ ΗΝ Ο ΛΟΓΟΣ ΚΑΙ Ο ΛΟΓΟΣ ΗΝ ΠΡΟΣ ΤΟΝ ΘΕΟΝ ΚΑΙ ΘΕΟΣ ΗΝ Ο ΛΟΓΟΣ (look up this ancient Greek yourself on google) John 1:1 Joseph Smith mistranslation: "In the beginning was the GOSPEL preached through the Son. And the GOSPEL was the word, and the word was with the Son, and the Son was with God, and the Son was of God." Smith's Jesus is no longer God in the flesh but the biblical Jesus is: "God was manifest in the flesh" 1Tim. 3:16 KJV. In order to try to make things work for LDS, J.S. added extra verses and verbiage into John 1 that were never there in any ancient texts to try to separate the idea of a trinity into 3 Gods. There are 4,000 Greek manuscripts of the New Testament. Some go back to 350 AD and NONE support Joseph Smith's claims that the bible of today has been corrupted. Papyrus fragments exist of the New Testament dated to 175 AD and show that the new testament has NOT been "corrupted". (New Testament Docs: Are They Reliable? Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1967 pp. 15-17) The manuscript and archeological evidence for the BIBLE is the GREATEST in antiquity. I pray you know the true Jesus and not Joseph Smith's exalted man from another planet who is not eternal, not all powerful, not perfect but evolving, and was polygamous. God is much greater than the humanoid of Mormonism and NOT just ONE OF AN ENDLESS NUMBER OF EVOLVING GODS. Jesus said ALL scripture will NOT fade away but "many wolves in sheep's clothing" will come trying to add to the word. Mathew 7:15 Joseph Smith changed Jesus, the Father and taught you can become a GOD. It hurts my heart to see Mormons fall for the lie that we can become God when there is only one eternal God found in the bible. "The only men who become Gods, even the sons of Gods are those that enter into polygamy." (Brigham Young) Journal of Discourses 11 p.269 Apostle Orson Pratt, in The Seer, page 172, “the great Messiah who was the founder of the Christian religion was a Polygamist…The son followed the example of his Father" God gave us critical thinking & logical reasoning for a reason, which is why he does tell us to EXAMINE and TEST what we are being taught for TRUTH. The bible withstands the truth test. Joseph Smith's version fails the truth test. It's your eternity, study it for yourself. God bless.

Joseph, on one occasion, said that it was never intended that he reveal all the details relative to the coming forth of The Book of Mormon!
@forzion1894
@forzion1894 Ай бұрын
That was in 1831, when Joseph was in a meeting which had a lot of other business to get to. However, after the anti-LDS book Mormonism Unvailed was published in 1834 with its false Spalding and seerstone-in-the-hat theories about how the Book of Mormon was produced, both Joseph and Oliver Cowdery published many statements about the translation emphasizing that it came from the plates through the means of the Nephite interpreters which came with the plates (sometimes referred to as the Urim & Thummim). See, for example, Oliver's account included in the Pearl of Great Price as a note to JS-H 1:71.

Alma 37: 23 And the Lord said: I will prepare unto my servant Gazelem, a stone, which shall shine forth in darkness unto light, that I may discover unto my people who serve me, that I may discover unto them the works of their brethren, yea, their secret works, their works of darkness, and their wickedness and abominations. 24 And now, my son, these interpreters were prepared that the word of God might be fulfilled, which he spake, saying: 25 I will bring forth out of darkness unto light all their secret works and their abominations; and except they repent I will destroy them from off the face of the earth; and I will bring to light all their secrets and abominations, unto every nation that shall hereafter possess the land.

Somewhere I read that the prophet Joseph Smith said the name of the brother of Jared was Mahonri Moriamcumer. I was thinking the Lord may have given him a new name like He did with Abraham, Israel, and other prophets. Scholars say Moses' name, given by his mother was Joachim, and the one given to him by pharoh's daughter was longer than the actual name he calls himself in his books. Maybe the Lord changed his name to Moses on Mount Sinai. I am pretty sure the Lord gave a new name to the brother of Jared on Mount Shelem also. It's possible the Lord gave him the name, Gazelem?

The Lord declared, “I will cause in my own due time that these stones shall magnify to the eyes of men these things which ye shall write” (Ether 3:24). These stones, the Urim and Thumin, were handed down to each seer in the Book of Mormon, and lastly were given to Joseph Smith by the angel Moroni, the last seer who possed them. Why would the prophet have a need to use other instruments in the translation process?

Thank you for this presentation offered with such care and detail. Not being LDS myself, but interested in LDS studies, I wasn't aware that the eight handled the exposed plates at any given time, especially all at once in the grove. What are the sources for this account? Also, during the translation of the book, the video shows Joseph with the plates next to the hat, and that he is referencing the plates while merely peering into the hat. What sources can I find that the plates were present at the table during translation? I thought the plates were covered and elsewhere during this process? Thanks for any information you might be able to offer.
@Bookofmormoncentralofficial
@Bookofmormoncentralofficial 29 күн бұрын
Thank you for your comment. There are many accounts of the eight witnesses, the primary one of course being the actual testimony written and published in the Book of Mormon itself. Take a look at this page from Mormonr.org about the witnesses. There is a section titled "Statements of reaffirmation from the eleven witnesses" That contains many first and secondhand accounts all with footnote references and dates. Regarding translation, again there are many accounts. The primary source for the representation in the video I believe comes from the account of Lucy Mac Smith stating that Joseph used interpreters and sometimes a seer stone to translate. We don't know exactly how things looked or were set up, but from the various accounts we know that peering into a hat with the seer stone or perhaps the Urim and Thummim inside was sometimes the method employed. The Joseph Smith Papers website is an excellent source for original documents. I suggest starting with this overview: www.josephsmithpapers.org/intro/introduction-to-documents-volume-1-july-1828-june-1831

God bless.

Joseph Smith is the prophet of the restitution of all things spoken of by all the Holy prophets and The Book of Mormon is what it purports to be, an ancient Egyptian record of the time only existing during that one moment in time when the Greek's, Egyptian's and Hebrews had an alliance. Joseph Smith didn't know that he was translating word for word Egyptian into English, but we have the evidence today and another testimony from Dr. Sami Hanna! That record is a Semitic record in every detail.

The golden plates are a similitude of Jesus Christ. Both are long lasting/immortal and both have been returned to our Heavenly Father. We have witness and records of their existence. Critic's might say, "Oh, it's convenient that the plates have been taken back" but could not the argument be made about a resurrected Savour? Why isn't he here now with us, since his immortal? Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. (John 20:29)

An observation that I find interesting is that LDS members base belief on a personal testimony or feeling. In Nicene Christianity reliance on scripture is paramount to personal feelings.
@Bookofmormoncentralofficial
@Bookofmormoncentralofficial Ай бұрын
This idea of gaining a personal witness comes from the scriptures. Of course the scripture in James 1:5 is the most often quoted "let him ask of God", but there are many others such as Matthew 21:22 "And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.", Philippians 4:6 "...but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.", etc. Prayer and seeking guidance from God is the way in which we can more fully understand his word as written in scripture, and answers often come through a combination of prayer and study.
@thescottchristopher

Yes, but what do you do when scriptural integrity weakens? When scripture gets translated over and over and is reinterpreted over centuries either accidentally or worse, on purpose? Best bet to rely on communication from a divine and loving Father who is there waiting for us to ask, knock and seek His pure truths.

At around 23 min, there is a mistake. Martin Harris never touched or saw the plates. He only saw them with his „spiritual eyes“ and then he mentioned something like seeing them like a city through a mountain. Knowing that they are there, but not actually seeing them with his eyes.
@Bookofmormoncentralofficial
@Bookofmormoncentralofficial Ай бұрын
Actually it's not a mistake. Martin gave many accounts of the plates and especially later in his life. Although the accounts differ in details it is important to remember who they come from. Several of the accounts were given by those who were trying to discount the witnesses and their actually seeing the plates. If you take all the accounts together especially those later in Martin's life directly from him he reaffirmed time and again that he had seen the plates for real. He would say things like "Do you see this hand, just as surely as you see my hand, I saw the plates." There is no doubt that he was trying to emphasize the reality of his experience. He also testified in several accounts that he did actually handle the plates. We do not know on what occasion, but it was likely sometime during translation and in the same way as did Joseph's family, feeling them or hefting them while they were covered. The account that mentions spiritual eyes is often used to discredit Martin but if you read all the accounts they make it clear. Here is an excellent article with 10 or so of the statements from Martin: witnessesofthebookofmormon.org/three-witnesses/martin-harris/statements/

Not sure where those phrases came from but it seems like an important detail to to omit and to not try to prove/disprove; or at the very least, clarify what that means exactly. Maybe those phrases just lead to a misunderstanding of what spiritual manifestations are like and it's best not to use them? ........It would be like saying "Let me just have a vision of the plates real quick and I'll get back to you as to what those phrases mean"...... haha so I don't expect an answer anyway. Or maybe.....I can have that same vision? If I can believe that Moroni appeared to Joseph several times then it's not really a stretch to believe he could have appeared to Mary Whitmer in the (flesh/material form) and the other 3 (in spiritual form) as well, so it's never been an issue for me. It might lead to people speculating that Joseph possibly fabricated the plates or started fabricating them before or within the space of time (like maybe a week?) between the 3 and 8 witnesses. It's hard to resist following the chain of questioning where it naturally leads. People might end up with that question in the back of their mind if it's not addressed and disproven.

The quote you refer to comes from Martin Harris. The spiritual nature of the 3 witnesses experience has long been used to try to discredit them, but the three witnesses were very explicit that they had actually seen the plates and the angel. Casey Griffiths addresses this in the episode as does Dan Peterson. Oliver Cowdery specifically responded to accusations in a letter in 1829 and made it very clear that there was no deception in the event. All the witnesses when challenged on this point (which critics wish to read into their statements) were adamant that the experience was literal, real, and undeniable.

Your information is not entirely correct. Joseph actually took Joseph Knight Senior's wagon to get the plates, but he did go with Emma as you've said. The plates were hidden in a log for a time until they were brought to the Smith home. This can be found in Lucy Mack's journal. She mentions that others were there but does not mention Stoal by name. The details of Josiah Stoal comes from his own account and a letter to Joseph Smith from Martha Campbell. Here are links to those references: Lucy Mack Smith, History, 1844-1845, Page [6], bk. 5, p. Weather I got the right person by name, the event does not change, nor the fact that Smith did not "borrow" Knight's horse and carriage, but took them without permission and his knowledge. I don't believe in Mormonism, but I enjoy watching this series. I think there is room among serious scholars for a theory that the plates did indeed exist. That Joseph Smith Jr. made them or had them made. Likely not of gold, but brass/copper or other metal and possibly gold plated. Not sure. If I had to guess I would say they didn't exist, but there is definitely a chance they could have. Having said that, even if they did exist, I dont believe reformed Egyptian was ever a language. Thank you for your comment. Historical accuracy is very important, and our scholars have done their best to keep the portrayals accurate. Because there are many accounts of how the translation happened there can sometimes be confusion on this topic. The depiction in the show draws from accounts on the Joseph Smith Papers website where many individuals such as Emma and others described the translation process. Some accounts talk about the Urim and Thummim being in a hat, such as this account from Joseph Knight Sr. (original spelling) [Smith] “put the urim and thummim into his hat and Darkned his Eyes,” a sentence “would apper in Brite Roman Letters then he would tell the writer and he would write it then that would go away the next sentance would Come and so on...” Emma Smith specifically says that Joseph used the Urim and Thummim (instead of the seer stone) while translating the 116 pages (before they were lost) but how the Urim and Thummim were used is not clear. Several accounts talk about the "spectacles" being placed in a hat. The depiction in the film draws from these accounts but does not emphasize either the seer stone or the Urim and Thummim (either could be in the hat) as being the method of translation. These accounts can all be found on www.josephsmithpapers.org/

@@Bookofmormoncentralofficial The only reliable first hand eye witness account of the translation process and the instruments used were Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery.

This is such an old and tired argument against the witnesses testimonies. It was actually Martin Harris that used the term "Spiritual Eyes", none of the other witnesses used this language to describe the experience. Martin afterwards amended his testimony (on many occasions) clarifying that although it was a spiritual experience to hear the voice of God, and see an angel, he saw the plates just as plain as you see anything. @@Bookofmormoncentralofficial I completely understand you ARE an apologetic organization, BUT I will have to disagree with you 100%. Martin Harris stated MANY times, and in different words that he never saw the Book of Mormon, NOR did the other 2 witnesses. They all saw within a vision only. Joseph took Martin off to the side from Whitmer and Cowdery, and took Smith several attempts to guide Harris in his vision. I have a book in the works, and source FAIR Mormon as well, who touched on this, AND I also use your site as an alternative view of what is truth, NOT sanitized apologetic. “But did you see them [plates] with your natural, your bodily eyes, just as you see this pencil-case in my hand? Now say no or yes to this.” Martin answered, “I did not see them as I do that pencil-case, yet I saw them with the eye of faith; I saw them just as distinctly as I see anything around me, though at the time they were covered over with a cloth.” ““Martin, did you see those plates with your naked eyes?” According to Gilbert, Harris “looked down for an instant, raised his eyes up, and said, ‘No, I saw them with a spiritual eye.’” David Whitmer "In regards to my testimony to the visitation of the angel, who declared to us three witnesses that the Book of Mormon is true, I have this to say: Of course we were in the spirit when we had the view, for no man can behold the face of an angel, except in a spiritual view, but 'we were in the body also, and everything was as natural to us, as it is at any time." I provided those from FAIR, I play fair ;) Unfortunately the LDS church does not. I WAS a member for over 20 years, a RM, and held several callings within teaching positions. We normally don't allow links in comments but yours were allowed because they show the problem with your argument very well. It is easy to take things out of context when it comes to historical accounts and it is also easy (as you have noted) to put too much emphasis on only the accounts that fit our worldview. The same article you reference with these quotes also says the following: "Some wish to make it appear as though the statements made by Martin Harris about the Three Witnesses’ manifestation discount its reality. Doing so pulls Harris’ statements out of their proper context..." If we go on to read all the accounts, look at all the evidence, it becomes very clear that not only Martin, but any of the other 20 witnesses of the gold plates had no doubt as to what they saw. We encourage everyone to study all the sources. As an apologetic organization we are often accused of ignoring information, but I assure you that is not the case. We focus on the whole picture. You won't find people who are more familiar with all the nitty gritty details. Take for example Don Bradley, who if you haven't watched his interviews with Stephen Jones, they will maybe give you an idea of the depth of searching for truth that happens in this organization. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ibR5gtB5nLi6Yn0.htmlsi=kqrGB5WD3hKtPuQN

I don't think there would. Remember the people in Jerusalem had Jesus there with him, they saw miracles, yet so many still chose not to believe, and they crucified him. The same happened in the Book of Mormon when despite signs from heaven and miracles being performed they set aside a day to kill the believers if the sign of Christ's birth did not come. When it did, they fell to the earth with fear because they realized the prophecy had been fulfilled. Most then repented and were baptized. God will not take away people's opportunity to choose for themselves or exercise faith.

It's a good question you ask Ally. I've thought about this before. I believe Heavenly Father is cautious in how much evidence He puts out there. If the evidence was so strong that all but the bitterest critics had to agree of the authenticity of any point of belief, then the agency of mankind is compromised. He will not force anyone to believe, but give just enough evidence to confirm the belief that already was in the heart. But if people do not exercise their faith to read, ponder and pray, they can choose to not believe and dismiss the evidence believers see.

What about Sydney Rigdon and the Spalding manuscript?
@Bookofmormoncentralofficial
@Bookofmormoncentralofficial Ай бұрын
It sounds like you're asking about the theory that Sidney Rigdon was somehow connected to a manuscript written by Solomon Spalding, sometimes called the "Spalding Manuscript." This theory involves claims that the Book of Mormon was derived from Spalding's work through Rigdon's involvement. Solomon Spalding was a former minister who wrote an unpublished manuscript called "Manuscript, Found." After his death in 1816, the manuscript went missing. Some people later alleged that this manuscript found its way to Sidney Rigdon, who then used it as a source for the Book of Mormon. Sidney Rigdon was an early leader in the Latter-day Saint movement who joined the Church after the Book of Mormon was published. Skeptics of the Church have proposed that Rigdon collaborated with Joseph Smith, using Spalding's manuscript to create the Book of Mormon. However, the majority of historical scholars, including non-LDS scholars, have found little credible evidence to support this theory. Key points that challenge the theory include: Manuscript Recovery: The "Manuscript, Found" was eventually discovered and is nothing like the Book of Mormon. Timelines and Relationships: Historical records don’t show that Rigdon had any connection with Joseph Smith or the manuscript before its publication. Witness Testimonies: The Eight Witnesses and the Three Witnesses of the Book of Mormon consistently maintained their testimonies of the divine origins of the book, even under duress and despite leaving the Church for various reasons.

Idk. I remember having an hour long discussion about the three witnesses testimony in the Book of Mormon. They saw the Book of Mormon with their spiritual eye. I remember the discussion cause I asked the institute teacher about how the CES thinks Joseph smith is wrong about there being a gold plate repository in the hill cumorah and that Joseph must have seen it with his spiritual eye. The ces said he’s wrong and there’s a second hill cumorah in Central America. I asked the teacher about this so the three witnesses then didn’t actually see the gold plates cause they saw them with their spiritual eye. He’s like no they actually saw them in that case. It’s interesting. If you’re in Utah you must believe the Book of Mormon refers to Central America. And most people are uniformitarians. It’s like if ya believe the Book of Mormon really then ya gotta be open to catastrophism and the potentiality that lake bonneville destroyed or emptied 2000 years ago or the Grand Canyon was made or whatever. If geologists are right that there’s no catastrophes as most changes take millions of years that’s pretty tough to rectify with the 3 Nephi mass catastrophe and geography changing totally.
